"I was chatting to a Y&T student last week and asked him about school. He was somewhat embarrassed to share with me that he was academically a high achiever. Still we live with the misconception that being creative somehow means that you are not as intelligent as those who struggle in this area.
It's weird. No one would ever think of William Shakespeare as being a poor student at school, but I wonder if he went through the same challenges growing up?! Our school system is structured in a way that places value on some subjects and looks at others as soft, weak and of less value. Sir Ken Robinson sums this up excellently in his

I repeatedly hear our Y&T students saying that the work they do with us helps to gets them through their week at school. For many of them they need the space to express themselves, somewhere they are not judged or assessed. Where they can have fun and explore the world in an organic, visual and physical way.
You would be naive however, to believe that what we do at Y&T is not educational:-
* The song writing is equal to the poetry writing and mathematical sequencing in class.
* The lyrical dance choreography is equal to PSHE classes in all school curriculums.
* The script work and analysis is equal to all comprehension throughout the humanities.
The benefits are great. This year each age group are composing their own musical and will be presenting them as a festival of plays titled The New Generation. This can only be made possible with bright, intelligent, expressive young people who are confident enough to share their creativity with the world.
Thank you for your continued support,
Suzann
