SPOTLIGHT ON SCOTLAND
~

Being a Scot, I've been voted editor of this newsletter, a tam o' shanter (Scottish bonnet) I'm very happy to wear as there's not much that Scotland doesn't do brilliantly - other than a long hot summer!

Its grand landscape is breath taking with 30,000 lochs, 282 monros ie mountains over 3,000' and 790 islands of which less than one quarter are inhabited. This is why so many wish to visit. And why crafting routes, for walkers, cyclists and those touring as we do, requires good local knowledge and a respect for the terrain.

The country's distinct identity embraces Highland games, a canny and independent spirit, kilts and bagpipes, golf and whisky galore and a dialect and place names that defy comprehension.

We spotlight below 4 themes (a hard choice) that we love about the place and hope they will inspire you to start exploring. Please give us a call as soon as possible with some dates in mind.  Flexibility has always been our mantra and we would rather have your holiday reserved even with the slight risk that may pose, than not be able to fulfil your requirements at a later date.

  TREASURED TRANSPORT
Climb aboard the 'greatest railway journey in the world',or enjoy a tidal timed landing on the world's only beach runway on Barra. Steam away on a restored puffer boat or ferry hop on the maze of subsidised routes operated by Calmac and smaller independents. You can even take a ferry from Kintyre to N Ireland in 1.5 hours!

  HIP HOTELS
There are several new kids on the bloc when it comes to hotels and their vision. WildLand is one with Killiehuntly among its several properties. Another is the Glen Affric Estate and on Jura Ardfin For those after wilderness free of charge, check out these bothies. Consider our Highland Fling trip.

  LOVED LANDSCAPES
Where to start? The stunning west coast be it the Cattle road to Applecross or Oban to Mallaig via Mull and  Ardnamurchan. Take a pass from Tyndrum through Glencoe or Duke's or Glenogle in the Trossachs. Enjoy sand dunes in Nairn and white sands on Vatersay. Walk gently or briskly, cycle easily or avidly, we take it all in!

  GARGOYLED CASTLES
It's thought there were once 30,000 castles in Scotland and you can stay in some that survive.  Of those we use, our favourites range from the grand at Inverlochy, via Fonab in Pitlochry and Faside near Edinburgh to the cute at Barcaldine and a few others too precious to share! For castle stays try our Highland coast to coast and Lochs and Glens cycling holidays.
