Subject: Machine Health Monitoring and Control
  Case Study Presentation
Machine Health
MonitoringHistorically, dryer bearings have a tendency to suffer from split inner raceways, this defect is very difficult to detect with standard vibration signatures. Emerson's PeakVue technology has proven to be exceptional at detecting defects that would otherwise go un-noticed and potentially fail catastrophically. One case in point was on dryer 37 front-side bearing which was detected and changed on a scheduled outage with no loss of production.
The ability to monitor bearings continuously has proven invaluable. Case in point, dryer 35 backside bearing which began to fail very rapidly and was caught and tracked up to a scheduled maintenance outage with no loss of production. With the former periodic collection schedule, this bearing defect would not have been detected prior to the outage and would very likely have resulted in catastrophic failure.
With the use of the 4500 Online Monitoring System unscheduled downtime due to bearing failures has been practically eliminated - a saving expected to be in the order of 50 hours per year based on historical downtime data. Based on these numbers the system has actually paid for itself within eight months.
