Verde Verde is only the second Cuban film (after the infamous Strawberry and Chocolate) to take up the theme of homophobia in Cuba.  Director Pineda Barnet describes the film as a tragic psychological thriller, presenting the age-old conflict of love versus hate, set in a timeless, universal location. One of the fundamental messages of Verde Verde is the need to confront extremism, prejudice and phobias that lead to the destruction of society. From this perspective, Barnet exalts human values such as love, honesty and authenticity. (In Spanish with English subtitles).

·      Direct from Cuba: El Ciervo Encantado presents “Cubalandia” a hilariously profound interactive performance by Cuba’s outrageously daring and controversial Lesbian Feminist theater collective addressing the social and political conditions of present-day Cuba. Presented in Spanish with English supertitles. 

 

 

 

·      From New York: the inimitable and wildly flamboyant Taylor Mac presents his latest work “The 20th Century Show,” an incredible visual feast and concert consisting of one song from each decade of the 20th Century (plus two encores) presented as “a performance ritual to help the audience let go of the 20th century and move into the 21st.”

Taylor Mac is a playwright, actor, singer-songwriter, and sometime director and producer.  TimeOut New York has called him, “One of the most exciting theater artists of our time” and American Theater Magazine says, “Mac is one of this country’s most heroic and disarmingly funny playwrights.”

·      From New York: the hilarious Cuban-American diva of queer comedy Carmelita Tropicana presents “Post Plastica Miami 2013” in collaboration with New York based filmmaker Ela Troyano.  Part live performance, part video installation, “Post Plastica Miami 2013” offers a glimpse into a future in which celebrity culture has pitched a battle between the primacy of virtual and artistic lives; in which revolutionaries keep bees in a secret underground; and in which a half-woman, half-bear scientist has gained the upper hand…

 

 

·      The riveting, highly controversial Cuban film “Verde Verde,” directed by Enrique Pineda Barnet explores issues of gay male identity and homophobia in contemporary Cuba. Presented in Spanish with English subtitles.  Miami-based actor Carlos Miguel Caballero, one of the protagonists, will be in attendance to introduce the film.

 

 

·      An all-new kind of boy band! The all-male gay singing string quartet Well-Strung features classical musicians who sing, putting their own spin on the music of Mozart, Vivaldi, Rihanna, Adele, Lady Gaga, and more!

Out in the Tropics kicks off its fourth year with a panel discussion and artists’ reception at the Miami Beach LGBT Visitor’s Center. The evening begins with an informal reception to welcome visiting Festival Artists Taylor Mac, Carmelita Tropicana and El Ciervo Encantado, followed by an informal, intimate panel discussion on themes relating to the work of visiting Festival artists and Miami’s diverse LGBTQ community.
