This Week at the Richmond Memorial Library                                    August 26, 2024

Marlborough Day
Thank you to everyone who came out to visit our booth at Marlborough Day and to those who stopped by our cake cutting celebration in the pavillion. We can't wait for next year!

Owl Guessing Game
Did you stop by our booth and make a guess as to how many cotton balls made up Paige's body? It was a combind total (white and brown) of 196 cotton balls! How close did you get? Congratulations to Julie M., who won the contest for people over 8 years old, and Owen K., who won the contest for children 8 and under. Both winners will be receiving a $15 gift card to Jessica's Garden.

LendingKey -- Library of Things Reservation System
Over the past several months, we have been working with our library consortium to purchase and implement a trial run of a Library of Things reservation system (LendingKey). LendingKey is the sister program to MuseumKey, which is the program the library has been successfully using to oversee its museum pass reservations for the past couple of years.

LendingKey is now live and we will be trying it out over the next few months and possibly over the next year before determining if we want to keep the reservation system. You can access LendingKey by clicking on Games on the main tab bar of the library's website (www.richmondlibrary.info). Much like MuseumKey, you will be able to search LendingKey by item or by date. Not every item in our Library of Things will appear in LendingKey, only the ones that we believed our library users would have an interest in reserving for a specific date as opposed to wanting the item when it became available. That being the case, you will not find items like sensory bins, nature explorer backpacks, early learning backpacks, or Tonie boxes and figures in LendingKey. Instead, this is where you would reserve yard games, the Bingo set, telescope, and our projector and screen.

To make a reservation, you will need to use your library card number and PIN. Your PIN is the one used for our online catalog, Encore.  If you don’t remember your PIN or have never created one, please call us at 860-295-6210 to reset it.

Please note that while you may reserve an item (up to 60 days in advance), availability depends on previous patrons returning items on time.  Items circulate for 7 days and cannot be renewed. One important note: Your check out begins the day you make your reservation for. If you end up being unable to pick the item up the day of your reservation, you may still pick the item up for a shorter check out period. While we no longer charge overdue fines, please respect your fellow library users and return items on or before the due date. Failure to return items on time will result in loss of game borrowing privileges.

Crafternoons with Carrie
This September we will be kicking off a new adult only Crafternoons with Carrie programming series. Held on the third Thursday of the month at 2 pm, Carrie will teach partcipants how to make a different craft. Our first program will be held on September 19 and we will be learning how to make Pressed Flower Lanterns. Registration for this series will be required because we need to know how many supplies to have on hand. The program will typically be held in our upstairs meeting room but we are more than happy to relocate it to our first floor children's room if there are accessibility issues.***

One note: Our September 19th program filled up in less than 2 hours after we announced the program (as did the waiting list) so we added a second program (an encore presentation so to speak) on September 26 (the location of this one has already been changed to the children's first floor storytime room). The September 26 program is also full at this time. We will only be able to offer two sessions of this program in September. If you are still interested and cannot get into the program, please still consider adding yourself to the waiting list. It will help us gauge interest in this series going forward.

American Job Center Series
Are you (or is someone you know) looking for a new job, trying to restart or jumpstart your career, or in need of specific job skills training? We will be partnering with the American Job Center over the next few months to offer drop-in (no appointments needed) assistance with resumes, job search assessment, career coaching, computer literacy, mock interviews, and on the job training programs. If this is something that interests you, stop into the library on the first Tuesday of the month. Our next program will be held on September 3 from 5-7 pm. The American Job Center is a one-stop career center that offers free help to job seekers for a variety of career and employment related needs.

Morning Book Club
The Richmond Memorial Library's Morning Book Club will meet on Thursday, September 12, beginning at 10 am. The group has chosen to read Trust by Hernan Diaz. Copies of this month's book are available at the circulation desk. Registration is not required and new members are always welcome.

Books Featuring Horses
Use our Encore catalog to put one of these books on hold today or ask our staff to put a hold on your account.

Beach Books are Back
Our popular Beach Books are back! If you're not familiar with how our Beach Books work, they are kept outside during the summer (we do try to bring them inside if severe thunderstorms are predicted) and our library users can stop by at any time to pick a couple out. We ask that you indicate on the sheet attached to the clipboard on the table the town you live in and how many books you are taking (we don't need the titles). This helps us with the statistics we are required to keep regarding library usage. Beach Books do not have strict due dates and we only ask that they be returned at the end of the summer or early fall.

Paige Says ...
Be on the lookout for Paige in our future newsletters! She will be popping in each week with her very own words of wisdom.

Yard Games
Did you know that our library has a large collection of yard games that can be checked out (we even have duplicates of a few games like Ginat Jenga and Giant Connect Four)? Due to their popularity, there is a strict limit of 2 per family at a time. They can be held for 2 days and borrowed for 7 days at a time. Renewals are not allowed. Call the library at 860-295-6210 for additional information.

Books for Babies

The Richmond Memorial Library has launched a new Books for Babies initiative to promote early literacy and learning while introducing library services to families in town. Marlborough families with children ages birth up to twelve months of age are invited to stop into the library to pick up a Books for Babies Box and register for your baby's first library card. Each Books for Babies Box includes two board books, a set of My First Touch and Feel Picture Flash Cards, early literacy and learning pamphlets and bookmarks, information about library programs for babies and toddlers, and supplies to get your child enrolled in our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program in addition to your child's first library card. Advance registration is required and can be done by filling out the following form:  https://forms.gle/QcLeJkNijHpkGFca9. This Books for Baby initiative has been funded by a Constellation Community Champions Grant.
