HUMAN RIGHTS APPOINTMENTS RE-IGNITE CALL FOR LGBTIQA+ COMMISSIONER

Just. Equal Australia has welcomed new appointments to the Australian Human Rights Commission, but says they highlight the lack of an LGBTIQA+ Discrimination Commissioner.

Spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said,

"It's pleasing to see new appointments to the Human Rights Commission, but these appointments highlight the Government's repeated refusal to appoint an LGBTIQA+ Discrimination Commissioner."

"The AHRC has dedicated commissioners for Sex, Age, Race, Disability, Children, Human Rights, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social justice."

"It is untenable not to have an LGBTIQA+ Discrimination Commissioner, especially at a time when attacks on our community are escalating."

"The message is that our human rights don't matter as much as the human rights of others."

Mr Croome said Just.Equal Australia will again write to Attorney-General, Mark Dreyfus, seeking an LGBTIQA+ Discrimination Commissioner.

Giri Sivaraman is the new Race Discrimination Commissioner and Robert Fitzgerald, the new Age Discrimination Commissioner.

The new Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Rosemary Kayess, started in the role at the end of January.
