Newsletter January 2022

Dear reader,

The covid pandemic continues. Fortunately, the omicron variant generally gives less serious complaints and in hospitals in Andalusia 13% of hospital beds are currently occupied by Covid patients.

In our newsletter of November 2021, our dermatologist Vicente Añeri Mas talked about the healthiest foods for your skin. In this newsletter, he informs you about the 10 foods that are most harmful for your skin.

Kind regards,
Bernadette Veeger

The ten foods that can most damage your skin.

Like everything in life, common sense is a good guide when choosing our nutritional products. For those who have doubts about which foods can be harmful to the skin, here is an overview.

Avoiding or minimizing the intake of certain foods can prevent and sometimes cure skin problems.

With certain allergies and persistent skin problems, it is clear that examination and assessment by the dermatologist is essential. The same rules though do not apply to everyone.

Here are the ten foods that can most damage the skin, dry it out, cause loss of elasticity, inflammation or atopic dermatitis:

1. Alcohol damages the liver, making it difficult to cleanse toxins that act on the skin. It also causes wrinkles, acne and uneven pigmentation, as well as inflammation of the skin. In addition, alcohol lowers the vitamin A content, which causes dry skin and premature aging of the skin.
2. Processed foods: Not only are these a major risk to our heart -because they contain hardly any nutrients- they also dry out the skin, which in turn promotes the development of wrinkles and sometimes skin inflammation.
3. Salty foods: Salt in large amounts, due to excess sodium, causes fluid retention and damages the skin. It causes swelling of the skin and reduces its elasticity. In addition, sodium raises blood pressure.
4. Fried foods: Fried foods are generally one of the worst foods for our health, as they can cause heart problems and raise cholesterol. Since fat is a circulatory-damaging agent, oxygen doesn't reach our skin properly, giving it a greasy, even grayish appearance, and promoting blackheads and facial acne.
5. Dairy products: Dairy cows on non-organic farms are administered bovine growth hormones to produce milk all year round. Its use can affect our skin in the form of acne, excess estrogen and skin inflammation. Problems with the development of rosacea and acne, related to the consumption of skim milk, rather than whole milk, have been documented before.
6. Sausages and red meat: The feed of the cows on large non-organic farms usually consists of processed feed. The use of hormones and chemicals is common and can cause hormonal disturbances in the skin, resulting in inflammation and acne.
7. Refined flours: Products rich in starch, such as pasta and industrial pastries, cause blood sugar to rise, which manifests itself in inflammation and acne. In addition, refined flours are also difficult for us to digest and provide hardly any nutrients or calories that are beneficial for us.
8. Seafood: These foods contain a high dose of iodine and an excess of iodine in our body can cause acne. On the other hand, crustaceans are major allergens in certain people. After eating this, a rash, intense itching and swelling of the lips or the whole face may occur.
9. Sugary and carbonated foods and drinks: Excess sugar in our bodies damages the structure of collagen, which can cause wrinkles and decreased skin elasticity. Moreover, sugar only provides empty calories, which in addition to generating oily skin are also the cause of various health problems in general.
10. Spicy foods: Abuse of spices and condiments causes blood vessels to widen and can re-create skin inflammation, acne and atopic dermatitis.
