To all our entrants, past and present, after some 30+ years of being involved with the Wokingham Half Marathon, the time has come for us all to call it a day.
The first race was held in 1984 starting in Molly Millars Lane and using a course to the south of the town, taking in Sindllesham, Arborfield and Barkham before finishing in the Carnival field where the swimming pool is now. Anyone who ran that course will always remember the steep incline from the football ground before turning into the field at the finish.
Following the development of the Carnival Field and the Football Ground the race was moved in 1994 to Cantley Park, with the original course starting in Bell Foundary Lane and taking in the rural lanes around Hurst. The course has been altered a couple of time to enable the start, as well as the finish to be within the park itself. This move also enabled the whole route to be traffic free.
With the extensive development taking place to the North of Cantley, the committee felt it may not be possible to continue with the existing route for much longer, and with advancing years, the time had come to retire.
At the moment it looks likely that the race will continue under the control of others, and we will help where we can to ensure a smooth handover. When these details are finalised we will put a link on our website http://www.wokinghamhalfmarathon.co.uk to the new organisation.
Can we take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved with the race, helpers, sponsors, Wokingham Borough Council (a more extensive list can be found on our website) and of course the runners, without whom it would be a fairly pointless exercise.
A history of the race can be found on our website.
