NEWS...

FIRST ETHIOPIAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHPIS MEDAL WINNER KEBEDE BALCHA HAS DIED
>From CAROLE FUCHS

One of the world's top marathoners in the 1980's, Ethiopia's Kebede Balcha, is no more. Balcha passed away on July 10 after an illness at Scarborough General Hospital in Toronto. He was 67.

Balcha was the only Ethiopian to earn a medal at the inaugural IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki in 1983, claiming the marathon silver (2:10:27) behind Rob de Castella of Australia (2:10:03). He distinguished himself on the African scene claiming the gold at the 1979 African championship in Dakar, the silver at the 1985 Championships in Cairo, and the bronze in the 1987 All-Africa Games, and the 1988 African Championships. In his only Olympic participation in 1980 in Moscow, he didn't finish the race.

The Ethiopian runner was also a popular figure in Montreal having won the Montreal marathon four times in 1979, 1981, 1983 and 1985. His 1983 winning time of 2:10:03 still stands as the course record. He also won the Athens Marathon in 1977 and placed second in Tokyo in 1985. For a detailed list of his race results: https://more.arrs.run/runner/6196

In 1999, Balcha was among a group of eight Ethiopian sports people seeking asylum in Toronto, the second well-known Ethiopian runner to apply for refugee status two years after double Olympic champion Miruts Yifter.

NOTE: Defending men's champion Ben Blankenship was the early leader, but he fell back in the last 200 meters when Pat Casey, Daniel Herrera, Cristian Soratos, Jake Edwards and Robert Domanic made their move. That pack of five battled to the line, and the race was ultimately determined in the final sprint where Domanic edged Casey, 4:00.44 to 4:00.73. "This way my first road mile, so I didn't know what to expect," Domanic told race organizers. "It was tough, but the crowds were great. People were lined up on the street the last 400 meters to go. My feet were on fire the last 200 meters. Still, I felt I was in a good position the last 100 meters and was able to finish strong." Shannon Osika took the lead at about halfway and was albe to hold it to the line, winning in 4:34, a second ahead of Stephanie Brown. "At the beginning of the race, I hung out in the back," said Osika. "When we hit the turn at the halfway point, I went for a better position. Then a little bit before the 200 meters, I pushed it a little and was able to finish strong. I love road miles! This particular race has a special place in my heart as I ran it back 2016 when I first turned pro." --Ed.

Summary of Middle & Long Distance Events
NOTE: At this two-day meeting, the final event was the show-stopper for the middle and long distance events: the women's mile. In that race, behind superb pacemaking by USA Olympian Brenda Martinez, Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan blasted to a sensational 4:14.71, the third-fastest mark of all time and the fastest-ever on British soil. "It's unbelievable how fast I ran today," Hassan said in her post-race interview. "I have the endurance and speed but don't normally have the last kick and today I did. Luckily, I'm able to say I have the meeting record and IAAF Diamond League record but it will be incredible to see how fast I can actually run in the future." Behind her, four more women broke 4:20 including American Jenny Simpson who came close to Mary Slaney's USA record of 4:16.71 by running 4:17.30 in fourth place. In the men's 1500m, reigning Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz won with a superbly-timed effort, holding off a strong charge by Australian Ryan Gregson in the final 80 meters. The American clocked 3:35.22 to Gregson's 3:35.35. Paul Chelimo won a tactical men's 5000m on the strength of a 52-second closing lap, and Emmanuel Korir ran a blistering 1:42.05 in the 800m, the fastest time in the world since the 2012 Olympic final --Ed.
