SummerSing Chorus Newsletter
Katie's Korner...
Dear Summer Sing,

Thanks for all your hard work last Wednesday's rehearsal! We went a bit deeper into Faith and Afternoon on a Hill, and it took more time than I'd meant it to - but I feel like we got a lot done! I always wish we could spend more time on each song like we did last night, and I also always wish that we could get to all of our songs every week! I guess I can't have both at the same time.

Afternoon on a Hill is coming together bit by bit! If you have time this week, listen to the whole song. In addition to the recording on the website, there are many good performances of it available on YouTube or any streaming platform. It is interesting to hear how different groups interpret the song and the poem. Each of them gives me that amazing "spend the whole day outside and then go home feeling great" feeling. My family will be going camping next month and I'm looking forward to having that feeling, although that is different than spending the whole day by yourself outside.

Are you someone who likes to be by yourself, or do you prefer to be with others? I really enjoy being with other people (definitely being with all of you each Wednesday night), but as I get older, I find that I need lots of time by myself in order to be in a good headspace for being with others. To me, Afternoon on a Hill sounds like what being by myself feels like.

Next week we will finish putting the final touches on our songs for the first hour, then run them on the stage during the second hour, to make sure we're ready. I hope you are all staying well and healthy in spite of the recent poor air quality! I am writing this on Thursday, and it looks like things should be better tomorrow.

See you soon! Be well and happy!

All the best,
Katie

Description: Who doesn’t love music? Why is music so important to so many of us? In fact, for many people, especially in their youth, music is part of their self-identity. We use music to comfort, console, and arouse ourselves—whether in workout classes or playing in background while we go about our everyday lives. Have you ever wondered what’s going on in your mind and brain while tunes play on in your mind’s ear? Why do you feel the way you do when you hear, unbidden, a song from your deep past? Music is a portal to “time travel” back to our past selves. What causes musical “earworms”? Research in Cognitive Neuroscience has revealed a lot about what the brain is doing while we listen to music as well as while we play or sing our music. Why is it that we can remember so MUCH music from our past? In the realm of complementary medicine, music has been applied to help troubled bodies and minds—indeed, music has the power to heal, as well as comfort. I’ll try to address these questions and yours in my talk.

Here is the link to lecture.  It id one hour long and works best with earphones.
