New QSEN Competency Standards for Graduate Nursing Programs Released
AACN is pleased to announce that new graduate-level quality and safety competencies are now available for nursing faculty teaching in master’s and doctoral programs. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Quality and Safety Education in Nursing (QSEN) initiative is addressing the challenge of preparing future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to continuously improve the healthcare systems in which they work. In February 2012, RWJF granted new funding to AACN to extend the reach of the national QSEN initiative to graduate education programs. Building on work completed by AACN at the undergraduate level, this project was launched to provide educational resources and training to enhance faculty expertise in this key practice area.
To accomplish this task, AACN convened a panel of experts in the field of quality and safety education and graduate-level practice as well as representatives of key stakeholder organizations. This advisory group reviewed the existing graduate competencies as well as AACN’s recently revised Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing (2011) to determine the competencies that graduate prepared nurses must possess to meet contemporary care standards.

Register for the 2013 CNL Research Symposium
The 2013 CNL Research Symposium, Research, Quality Improvement, & Evidence-based Practice: Catalysts to Innovation, is scheduled January 17, 2013 from 7:15 am to 12:30 pm at the JW Marriott New Orleans in New Orleans, LA. Hosted by the Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC) and the Clinical Nurse Leader Association (CNLA), the workshop is a preconference event to the AACN’s CNL Summit scheduled January 17-19, 2013.
The keynote presentation, Data Sanity as the Catalyst to Unprecedented Organizational Transformation, will be presented by author and statistician Davis Balestracci. Data Sanity will introduce a “mind set,” not a “tool set” – an everyday organizational language to understand the many guises of variation and how to react appropriately. This will challenge many current perceptions of “traditional” statistics as typically taught and practiced. The presenter will demonstrate several common statistical traps and show how many data displays create significant waste of precious time and energy.  A few elegantly simple—and counterintuitive—alternatives will be presented that can create deeper, more productive conversations about data issues and be the surprising catalyst for true organizational excellence.
Other presentations include:
Using Interrupted Time Series Research Design to Measure Clinical Practice – Miriam Bender, MSN, RN, CNL, Sharp Healthcare and University of San Diego Hahn School of Nursing
Critical Appraisal: Deep Reflection on the Research Evidence – Patricia L. Thomas, PhD, SMN, RN, CNL, Director of Nursing Practice and Research, Trinity Health System; Linda Roussel, DSN, RN, NEA, BC, Professor, University of South Alabama
Participants will also have an opportunity to discuss various topics related to data management that are of interest to CNLs during a roundtable topic breakfast.
Separate registration from the CNL Summit is required. Registration (includes breakfast) for the CNL Research Symposium is $99; after January 4, the cost is $129. Register early - space is limited. To register, go to http://www.aacn.nche.edu/events/2013/01/17/cnl-research-symposium. For more information, contact Tracy Lofty, CNC’s Director, at tlofty@aacn.nche.edu or call 202-463-6930, ext. 242.

In addition, the award promotes the contributions of the CNL in transforming healthcare. The 2013 recipient will be recognized at the CNL Summit, January 17-19, 2013 at the JW Marriott New Orleans in New Orleans, LA.
The CNL Vanguard Award recipient will receive a complimentary registration, $500 travel stipend to attend the 2013 CNL Summit and Research Symposium, a commemorative award, and a CNL lapel pin. The application deadline is October 15, 2012.

Register for an Event to Learn How NursingCAS Will Benefit Your Program & Applicants
NursingCAS is the centralized application service for students applying to nursing programs. Through NursingCAS, prospective students (currently there are over 47,000 in the system) can research and apply to diploma, associate degree, baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral programs offered by participating nursing schools. Last cycle, 38% of NursingCAS applicants were from minority backgrounds, and 15% were men. Students benefit from using NursingCAS because they only need to complete one online application and prepare one set of corresponding admissions materials that are disseminated to designated schools of nursing for consideration. NursingCAS processes the applications, provides support to applicants and schools, and provides schools with information and technology to make admissions decisions. Learn more about how to implement NursingCAS at your school and how other schools are benefiting from the service by registering for an upcoming Webinar or event.
