July 4-6

Summer is in full swing, and in Kentucky that means it's HOT outside. It's so hot, Sarah has put both a Tunisian wave stitch afghan and an alpaca/wool sweater in time out until the cool breezes return. Don't despair, that doesn't mean she's without a knitting project! She's got three on the needles: a cotton car seat baby blanket , a pair of socks, and a fingering weight shawl. All three are light enough to stomach knitting while laying in a hammock or watching an outdoor movie, and small enough to take along on a Summer road trip.

If you've hit the Summer doldrums with your knitting, we've got a slew of Summer classes to help you learn a new skill or walk you through a quick project. Later this month we've got a couple trunk shows, and a yarn crawl and it's never too early to get started on your Christmas list with our Christmas in July knit-a-long!

New In The Shop

We added a couple of colors of Pandamonium from Cascade Yarns last year as an option for people knitting and crocheting Knitted Knockers, but the yarn was so lovely we decided to add a full range of colors to our selection. Only about half of the colors we ordered have arrived, but we couldn't wait to share them with you. Pandamonium is a DK weight yarn made from a 55/45 blend of cotton and bamboo offering drape and breathability. It is delightfully soft, silky, and durable making it an excellent choice for knitting or crocheting summer garments and accessories, home décor, and it's an excellent option for small amigurumi.

Robyn has already made the Pressed Flowers Kerchief with this yarn which is a perfect summer accessory. We also like it for the Midsummer Headband, Summer Flow (tank), Anker's Summer ShirtDaisy Chain and Clusters Baby Blanket (crochet), Baby Fern Lake (blanket).

We just received a restock of the Maker's Mini Messenger bags and Oh Snap Pouches from Della Q and since y'all loved them so much we decide to add some of the Maker's Canvas Rucksacks to the order as well.

The Canvas Rucksacks are crafted from sturdy waxed canvas with quality hardware and accents, this hybrid bag works three ways — wear it as a crossbody, shoulder bag, or carry it like a clutch. Inside, you’ll find maker‑friendly details such as an integrated yarn feeder, a yarn cutter to keep your project moving smoothly, and a decorative pin with emergency stitch markers so you’re always prepared.

The Maker's Mini Messenger bag is also made with their sturdy waxed canvas and it is packed with pockets. There are 2 main zipper close pockets, a shallow zipper pocket on the front, a snap pocket on the back, an interior zipper pocket, and interior open pockets, some which are perfectly sized for your crochet hooks or dpns! It's also got a yarn guide and a place to store your stich markers.

Emma's Crazy Beautiful Color for the month of July is here to beat the midsummer heat with its icy aqua covered in dreamy lavender, magenta, and subtle golden sunshiny specks! It is absolutely gorgeous and just the thing to cool you down on a hot day. As usual, this colorway pairs perfectly with several other Emma's colors including Lilac You A Lot, Jammin', Down the Rabbit Hole, Mermaid Tavern, and Barbie Girl.

Events at ReBelle

For the month of July, we will be doing our annual Christmas in July KAL/CAL. Whether you are starting holiday gifts or working on holiday décor, all projects are welcome.  Each person will pick their own pattern that falls in the category of Christmas in July and we will knit/crochet them together.

Robyn created two Ravelry bundles here and here with several pattern ideas if you need some help finding the perfect pattern. She is also available if you need help finding a pattern for a particular yarn.

For the first weekend of the Heartland Yarn Adventure, Maps Yarn will once again be taking over the classroom of ReBelle with a selection of yarns, patterns, and other goodies.

Conley is a local dyer here in Lexington, Ky. She started Maps Yarn when she discovered the joy of small batch dyeing in her backyard and never looked back. She is an avid knitter and a blooming knitwear designer, her first design, the Dandelion Halter Bralette, was published last year and she has since published 10 more designs that all work well with her yarns.

The yarns will be set up all weekend and Conley will join us in person from 11am-3pm on Saturday for a Meet the Maker. You can ask her questions, get her project advice, and even place custom orders if she doesn’t have exactly what you are looking for. Come discover your next favorite skein!

Intro to Steeks

How to you turn a pullover into a cardigan? Just cut it down the front!  That’s what steeks are, an intentional, pre-planned way to cut your knitting.  It sounds crazy, and feels intimidating, but steeks have served this purpose for hundreds of years.

Bring a piece of stockinette stitch knitting with you, at least 5” square, in any yarn.  It can be an old gauge swatch, a worn piece of hand knitting, or something you knit just for this class.  You’ll learn how to secure and cut the steek, and how to edge it afterwards.

Down and Dirty Socks

Socks are  all about the heel and the toe.  Socks are just tubes, it’s the heels and toes that are so scary when you learn to make socks.  This class uses the Rye Worsted pattern from Tin Can Knits, and boils sock making down to the basics.  By focusing on the hard parts and skimming past the easy parts, you’ll get a concentrated, down and dirty lesson on sock knitting that can be done in a single class.  Whether you are brand new to sock knitting or you’ve taken the basic sock class and need a refresher, this class is for you.  If you’re an adventurous beginner who is confident with knitting in the round on small circumferences, this is the perfect entryway to sock knitting. The class socks will look wonky, but they’ll teach you what you need to know to make a sock.

For this class you’ll need worsted weight yarn and needles for your preferred sock knitting method.

Cables and Travelling Stitches

The twisty beauty of cables have long captivated the knitter.  They look so complex, but in truth, anyone can make a cable, it’s just a matter of changing the order that you knit the stitches.  Travelling stitches are the German version of cables, each stitch twisting and travelling to create stunning small cables.  If you can knit, Susan can teach you to knit cables.  This class will also teach you to read and use cable charts.  It’s time to give your knitting a new twist!

You will need to bring  worsted weight yarn and appropriate needles and a cable needle if you have one. We will have some different types of cable needles for you to try as well.

Helix Knitting

Helix knitting is a way of knitting in the round that creates one row stripes of many colors with minimal ends to work in, and smooth stripes with no jog.  It’s the perfect way to use up small quantities of yarn to knit a cohesive, striped whole.  It can be used on hats, on sweaters, on socks, anything that is knitted in the round.  If you’re comfortable with knitting in the round and you have leftover yarns from other projects, helix knitting is for you.

Bring several leftovers of worsted weight yarns (I’ll have extras, too), and 16” circular needles in the size you like for worsted weight, and before the class is over, you’ll be well on your way to knitting your first helix hat.

In this class, Susan will teach you the basic mitered square technique as well as a few variations. You will also learn how to pick up stitches to join squares without seaming. If you can knit garter stitch, you can do this!!
