Wednesday 8 April

Next week we welcome an old friend to BPS, when John Tilsley ARPS, DPAGB, APAGB will be visiting us from Dorchester and presenting his talk called Candid Portraiture and Street Photography.

John says the following about his talk:
I have always taken pictures of people in their natural environments. Not for me a posed or set up image. I want a candid picture of the subject engrossed in what they are doing unaware of me as a photographer. I always revisit my favourite events and now have a large archive of images, which I will share with you all. We will visit amongst others, numerous heritage railways, the Tolpuddle Rally, New Forest Pony sales, Wimborne Folk Festival and experience going to war in Martinstown.
You can see more about John by visiting his website at https://johntilsley.photos/.

However, if you'd like a taster of the talk, here are a few images from the night:

Sound System
Our last meeting saw the first use of the newly installed microphone system. We are aware that there may have been one or two teething problems experienced by the Zoomers. So that Matt can get any problems sorted quickly, could you please email him (politely please) at webmaster@bristolphoto.org.uk, explaining fully the details of the problem(s) you experienced. This will enable Matt to either fine tune the system at our end or get the installation company back to try to resolve the problems.

DI Group
The next Digital Imaging Group Meeting will be on Monday 13 April at 7.30pm.

Meetings are informal and take place at the clubhouse and via zoom.

These meetings are a great opportunity for all members to share images outside the competition environment. The aim of these evenings is to share knowledge, projects, expertise, ideas and to obtain feedback and inspiration. So think about what techniques or tips you can share for the benefit of others, or what you might want help/feedback on.

DIG is the perfect environment for newer and less experienced members to pick up hints and tips or receive specific feedback to improve their photography and editing skills. BPS has many experienced members with diverse interests and styles who would be happy to help. If you are unsure whom to approach, just ask and someone will help or point you in the right direction.

If you would like to share your images at the April meeting, please send them to me at dig@bristolphoto.org.uk by 5.00pm on Friday 10 April. Please number your images in the order you would like them to be viewed and resize to the usual competition size, not essential but helps to keep the files to a manageable size. If you could please restrict the number of images to a maximum of 30, this will ensure that we enjoy a wide variety of subjects.

If you have a more detailed topic / technique to share, then let me know and we can schedule a longer more focused session, or feature this on one of the intervening practical evenings.

I look forward to receiving your images.

Rachel Domleo

Key Found
A key was found in the clubrooms after our last meeting. If it belongs to you, drop me a line at bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk and we can make arrangements for you to be reunited with it. It has the number 30 stamped on one side.

Knowing some of our members, it could well be a key to the lock on their wallet!

Studio Event
I have received the following from Derwood Pamphilon:

There are very few spaces remaining on my event: Suzy Homemaker. Sat 27th June, Antwerp House, Manchester.

Book via:

Promo video:

Suzy Homemaker is my own self-made dance theatre production that has been Arts Council Funded. This is the first and only time I am opening up the characters to be photographed in an event setting. To make things even better, we will have some of the set pieces from the show which can be seen in the video. The show follows 3 women between 1903-1950 trapped in roles they did not ask for.
How the shoot will work:
Group 1 is inspired by the character, Susannah, an Edwardian socialite in 1903. A young lady entering “society” for the first time, she is promenaded in front of suitors - but as an educated woman, she realises she’s just being sold like cattle, and dreams of more when discovering the Suffragette movement.
10.30am-12.30pm (2 spaces left)

Group 2 is sold out!

Group 3 is inspired by the character, Suzy, a 1950s housewife.
Suzy is quite strange but looks like the “perfect wife” to the outside world. She is neat, prim, and makes an excellent Victoria sponge, but with a madness to her that you can’t help but both be disturbed by and pity.
3.30-5.30pm (2 spaces left)

As always with my events you can expect excellent organisation, plenty of shoot time and great styling. I will be using the custom wigs and costumes made for the show. No expense spared. Our assistant will be the amazing Elly Welford. Elly is well renowned UK photographer.
You will have the chance to work 121 with each set.
10.30am-12.30pm Susannah (Edwardian)
3.30-5.30pm Suzy (50s housewife)
Max 6 photographers per set.
£95 per photographer per set, £70 deposit to secure your place.

The location is the iconic Antwerp House (which can be seen in the promo photos). It is a run-down but well-kept mansion in the outskirts of Manchester. It is where all of the promo images were taken and where the characters were first created!

Unsolicited Testimonial
I have received the following from John Hudson:

I recently had one of those unexpected mini disasters, my ‘go to everyday' printer, Epson R265, stopped working, and displaying double red flashing warning lights! It has always been so reliable, and printed many entries for club competitions, and my FRPS/ARPS panels too.

I asked a few people, but no one knew a repairer.  Well, I finally found someone I would thoroughly recommend for speed, efficiency, technical knowledge, value for money and professional attitude - they are:
