We love Seahorses!

Don't we all? Lately, we found more Seahorses than ever before, so we thought to share some amazing Seahorse facts with you.

Seahorses have excellent eyesight and their eyes are able to work independently on either side of their head. This means they can look forward and backward at the same time! This is particularly useful as they hunt for food and to detect predators by sight.

Male seahorses are the ones who give birth. The female lays her eggs in the male’s pouch for him to fertilize internally. He then carries them — as many as 2,000 at a time — for two to three weeks before giving birth.

Seahorses can change colour to match any surroundings in which it finds itself. The seahorses below are all from the same species.

Seahorses are ridiculously poor swimmers. They are the slowest-moving of all fish species because of an impeccably tiny fin in the middle of their back, being the only way to propel themselves. This one little fin can beat back and forth up to 50 times a second. There small pectoral fins only assist in steering.

Photo of the month

Seahorses use their long snout to suck food. Everything that is consumed gets rapidly passed through their digestive system, because they do not have a stomach and teeth.
