Next Wednesday sees the final round of the 2025-2026 Projected Image Competition, which is being judged by Steve Hallam LRPS, who hails from Bristol and is a member of Hanham CC.
Unfortunately, I can find nothing about Steve on the web, so next Wednesday will just have to be a surprise to all!
This is the round when the overall winners of the four-round series will be announced, so an evening not to be missed.

BPS have been approached by software company, DxO, offering club members a 15% discount on their range of products. These products are aimed, in part, at photographers such as BPS members who process their images using software such as Photoshop and Lightroom, and who would like to use software that doesn’t have a rolling subscription, ie the DxO programmes are purchased for a one-off outlay. I’ve described three of the range, below
PHOTOLAB 9
It’s like an alternative to tools such as Adobe Lightroom or Capture One, designed for photographers who want very high image quality and detailed control.
Here are its core functions:
1. RAW photo editing
- Works
best with RAW files from cameras
- Lets
you adjust exposure, colour, contrast, etc. non-destructively (your
original file stays untouched)
2. Automatic corrections (its big strength)
- Fixes
lens and camera issues automatically:
- distortion
- vignetting
(dark corners)
- chromatic
aberration
- Uses a
huge database of camera + lens profiles built from lab testing
3. Noise reduction (very famous feature)
- Uses
AI tools like DeepPRIME to remove grain/noise
- Especially
useful for low-light or high-ISO photos
4. Local adjustments
- You
can edit specific parts of an image (like just the sky or a face)
- Includes
AI masking and selective editing tools
5. Colour and detail control
- Fine-tune
colours, tones, sharpness, and contrast
- Designed
for high-end image quality output
NIK COLLECTION 8
It’s a bundle of advanced editing tools (plugins) that add powerful creative effects and controls to your photos.
It includes 7 main plugins, each focused on a different task:
- Color
Efex → colour
filters & creative effects
- Silver
Efex →
black-and-white photography (very popular)
- Analog
Efex →
vintage/film camera looks
- HDR
Efex → HDR image
creation
- Viveza → colour & light adjustments
- Dfine → noise reduction
- Sharpener → sharpening details
PURERAW 6
DxO PureRAW 6 is a photo-processing software that improves the quality of RAW images before you edit them in tools like Lightroom or Photoshop.
PureRAW 6 focuses on image quality enhancement, especially:
- Noise
reduction (very strong)
Uses AI (DeepPRIME XD3) to remove grain while keeping detail
- Sharpening
& detail recovery
Extracts fine detail from RAW sensor data
- Lens
corrections
Fixes distortion, vignetting, and softness based on lab-tested profiles
- Demosaicing
Converts RAW sensor data into a high-quality image (technical but
important step)
There are other programmes in the range, and all can be seen by visiting their website: https://www.dxo.com/
If you decide you’d like to take advantage of the 15% discount, just quote BPS at the checkout – you will then receive your discount and as an added bonus, BPS will receive a 5% commission on your sale – a win/win situation.

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |

The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell
us we can't possibly know!
