1. AACN Announces Election Results
AACN is pleased to announce the results of its 2013 election to fill seats on the AACN Board of Directors and Nominating Committee. With votes cast by member deans and directors from the nation’s schools of nursing with baccalaureate and higher degree programs, those joining AACN’s top leadership ranks include Board members Margaret Faut Callahan from Marquette University, Greer Glazer from the University of Cincinnati, Jean Leuner from the University of Central Florida, Marcia Mauer from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and David Vlahov from the University of California-San Francisco. 2. AACN-Wharton Executive Leadership Program Now Accepting Applications

AACN is pleased to announce the second annual leadership development program for nursing leaders. Offered by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, this four-day program will be taught by Wharton faculty, who will present relevant and timely content designed to advance chief academic administrators to a higher level of leadership.  
The AACN / Wharton curriculum is designed to provide the concepts and tools needed to enhance leadership capacity and hone the skills that are essential to move forward strategically as an academic leader. The program addresses issues around managing and leading change, influencing and galvanizing a diverse set of stakeholders, and building strategic relationships in highly volatile environments. Participants in this program will leave equipped with an advanced set of negotiation, leadership, and influencing skills, and the confidence and ability to serve on or lead high-powered boards. 3. GNSA Launches Free Webinar Series and Announces New Leadership Council
Pathways to Leadership for the Graduate-Prepared Nurse

Graduate nursing students are invited to join distinguished nurse leader Mary Wakefield, PhD, RN, FAAN, for an insightful conversation about the expanding roles for nurses with master's and doctoral level preparation. Dr. Wakefield, the highest ranking nurse in the federal government who heads the Health Resources and Services Administration, will discuss how nurses are transforming the future of healthcare in many arenas, including primary care, healthcare administration, research, policy, and education.
Dr. Wakefield will share her own personal story from bedside nurse to national leader and offer advice on how to advance your own pathway to leadership. Following the remarks, participants will have the chance to ask questions and explore topics of personal interest. Dr. Wakefield is presenting this free webcast to help launch the Graduate Nursing Student Academy (GNSA), a new national network of students in master’s and doctoral nursing programs established by AACN.

4. Register Now for AACN's Spring Annual Meeting
Make your plans to attend AACN’s 2013 Spring Annual Meeting: “Guiding Change: Technology in Nursing Higher Education,” to be held March 16-19, 2013 at The Fairmont Washington Hotel in Washington, DC. Highlighting the meeting will be the presentation of the Nursing Spectrum/Gannett Foundation Lectureship Award to Jeannine M. Rivet, Executive Vice President, UnitedHealth Group Inc. There will be pre-meeting sessions on Saturday, March 16. Concurrent sessions will be held on implementing the consensus model for APRN regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification & Education (LACE); the UHC/AACN residency program; the Joining Forces national campaign; enrollment management in the digital world; and federal funding updates. Also scheduled for this day are the Orientation for New Members, New Deans, and Prospective Members; and the New Dean Mentoring Program Wine and Cheese Social. The opening session on Sunday will focus on technology approaches in higher education and will be presented by Diana G. Oblinger, President and CEO of EDUCAUSE (Washington, DC). There will be a reception on Sunday evening following Jeannine Rivet’s lecture, and exhibits will remain open during the reception. Monday’s agenda will include informal breakfast discussions on being a leader among leaders and preparing for Capitol Hill visits, the Issues Forum, the business meeting, and task force updates. In the afternoon, members will make Capitol Hill visits to their representatives’ offices and attend a reception on the Hill. The Spring Meeting will conclude with two exciting program sessions on Tuesday, March 19.

Executive Development Series

5. AACN's Inaugural Academic-Practice Partnerships Conference
AACN member deans and their practice partners are encouraged to make plans now to attend the Implementing Successful Academic Practice Partnerships conference on April 18-19, 2013 in Chicago, IL.  Discover the keys to maximizing your strategic affiliations to ensure that they are goal-driven, outcome-focused, and mutually beneficial. Participants will explore how to sustain commitment and cooperation among partnering organizations through interactive presentations highlighting successful collaborations, including a look at partnerships forming to support the new federally funded Graduate Nursing Education demonstration. The registration fee is $299 per person, and both the academic and the practice partner must attend together as a pair.  Please note that this conference is geared towards those partnerships that are new and/or under development. Registration will open January 7, 2013 and is limited to 50 partnership pairs. 

6. Register Now for the Hot Issues Conference in St. Louis
  The Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet in St. Louis, MO is the site for AACN’s 2013 Hot Issues Conference, to be held April 11-13. This year’s conference addresses the use of technology to transform nursing education. The informal and interactive nature of this conference is particularly well suited to the sharing of ideas among speakers and participants. The conference encourages attendees to explore online educational delivery models; discuss productive ways to work with state boards of nursing on distance education issues; examine regulatory issues that impact the current state of technology use in nursing education as well as consider future directions; and identify key requirements for online courses that have a clinical component. 7. Apply for the Leadership in Academic Nursing Program
AACN sponsors an executive leadership fellowship tailored specifically for aspiring and new deans. Designed to prepare a more diverse, younger pool of leaders for nursing programs, this professional development experience encompasses an assessment and evaluation of leadership skills, opportunities for strategic networking and case study development, consultation to achieve long-term goals, and identification of key partnerships.

Call for 2013 Applications

Applications must be received by AACN no later than April 12, 2013 in order to be considered. 10. Inaugural Winners for AACN's New Dissertation and Capstone Awards
 Last year, AACN created a new awards program to recognize outstanding dissertations and capstone projects completed by students in research- and practice-focused doctoral programs. With more than 60 applications received for these top honors, awards were presented at AACN’s annual Doctoral Education Conference in January 2013. 
The Excellence in Advancing Nursing Science Award for an outstanding dissertation from a student in a PhD in nursing or DNS program was presented to Dr. Oleg Zaslavsky, who graduated in 2012 with his PhD from the University of Washington. His dissertation chair was Dr. Barbara B. Cochrane (pictured below). For his Longitudinal Dynamics in Indicators of Frailty: Predictors and Long-Term Outcomes study, Dr. Zaslavsky used latent growth mixture modeling to examine trajectories of change in musculoskeletal and neuro-cognitive indicators of frailty in older women, using the large Women’s Health Initiative database.
Honorable mention went to Tiffany Moore, BSN–PhD student from the University of Nebraska Medical Center for her dissertation of Model of Allostatic Load and Complications of Prematurity
The Excellence in Advancing Nursing Practice Award for an outstanding capstone project from a student in a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program was presented to Dr. Erin Harnett. Dr. Harnett graduated in 2011 with her DNP from New York University, and her capstone project advisor was Dr. Barbara Krainovich-Miller (pictured below). Dr. Harnett’s Integrating Preventive Dental Care in a Pediatric Oncology Center evidence-based practice project resulted in a significant policy change in practice at a major Cancer Center for a highly vulnerable pediatric oncology population. The Center admission protocol now requires that all pediatric oncology patients receive a comprehensive oral health assessment and exam on admission as well as receive fluoride varnish treatment and a dental referral if caries are detected prior to initiating their chemotherapy or other forms of cancer treatment.
Honorable mentions went to:
  • Vicky Grossman, MPH-DNP student from Duke University for her capstone on The Role of Health Promoters in Zinc Compliance in Guatemala.
  • Carrie Kairys, DNP student from Johns Hopkins University for her capstone on Improving Contraceptive Counseling by Instituting a Provider Reminder with Clinical Decision Support in the Electronic Health Record.

11. Faculty Policy Intensive Award Winners Announced
AACN is proud to announce that eight faculty members have been selected from a pool of highly competitive applicants to become the inaugural Faculty Policy Intensive class. AACN will bring these leaders in nursing education to our headquarters in Washington, D.C. to hone their advocacy skills so they can further advance the contributions of the profession at the local, state, and national level. The Faculty Policy Intensive is a board-approved initiative that offers eight faculty of AACN member schools a fully funded four-day immersion program designed to expand on existing knowledge and create leaders in healthcare policy.

12. Current Calls for AACN Award Nominations
This award recognizes the outstanding work of AACN member schools to re-envision traditional models for nursing education and lead programmatic change. One of the highest honors a person can receive from AACN is the Sr. Bernadette Armiger Award, which recognizes a nursing leader who has made significant contributions to AACN and its goals, to nursing education, and to the advancement of the profession. The award honors Sr. Bernadette Armiger for her distinguished service to AACN and to recognize and encourage efforts toward the advancement of nursing education and practice. Sr. Bernadette served as AACN’s third president from 1972-1974. As AACN president, she was instrumental in forming an alliance between AACN and the ANA, as well as the Interorganization Committee for Implementation of Nursing’s Role in Health Care Delivery, which brought together the presidents and executive directors of AACN, ANA, and the NLN. 13. CCNE Seeks Applicants to Serve as On-Site Evaluators
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) is seeking applications from both educators and practicing nurses to serve as volunteer evaluators on its nursing education program accreditation review teams. The next evaluator training program will be held on May 20-21, 2013, in Reston, Virginia. The application materials are available at:
CCNE typically conducts on-site evaluations during the spring (February through April) and fall (September through November). An on-site evaluation of a nursing program (which could be located at a college or university anywhere in the country) typically occurs over a three-day period. CCNE's expectation is that evaluators commit to participating on at least one on-site evaluation per year, if asked. Please consider this information when submitting an application. The deadline for submitting application materials is March 15, 2013

14. Apply Now for the 2013 Minority Nurse Faculty Scholarship
AACN, with support from the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for  Nursing’s Future, is currently offering a sixth round of scholarship funding to underrepresented minority nursing students who plan to work as nursing faculty after graduation. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a doctoral nursing program or a clinically-focused master’s degree program. Five scholarships in the amount of $18,000 will be awarded.

15. AACN Releases New Joining Forces Faculty Tool Kit
Last summer, AACN joined with the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) to enhance the resources available to nurses working with veterans as part of the Joining Forces initiative, with a particular focus on nursing education. To that end, the Enhancing Veterans’ Care (EVC) Tool Kit has been developed and includes resources and exemplars that can assist faculty with the implementation of curriculum elements that will appropriately address the unique needs of veterans and their families. 17. ELNEC Announces New Training Program for APRNs in Palliative Care

 Palliative Care is growing in the United States and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are expected to:
  • Respond to the complex needs of patients with serious and life-limiting illness and their families as outlined in the 2010 Institute of Medicine report on the Future of Nursing
  • Meet the objectives of the 2010 Affordable Care Act which will increase healthcare access for all Americans
  • Provide quality palliative care across the lifespan and across clinical settings, as defined by the National Consensus Project for Quality Care Clinical Practice Guidelines 
 This course is designed for APRNs, including nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse midwives, and nurse anesthetists. Nursing faculty are encouraged to attend this training, as they will receive information/training regarding issues vital to all APRN students (i.e. overview of palliative care, advanced pain and symptom assessment/management, communication, leadership, finance/budget/business development). 
Plan now to attend the April 4-5, 2013 course in Anaheim, CA or the November 5-6, 2013 course in Washington, DC. Further information about these two national training courses is located at

18. CNC News & Announcements
CNC Offers Discount for the CNL Certification Exam 
CNC continues to develop new items for the multiple-choice CNL Certification Exam. As such, the exam that has been administered since April 2012 will be updated beginning with the April 2013 testing period. However, CNC must beta test the items to determine the minimum passing score in compliance with national certification standards.  
The beta test will occur April 1-6, 2013. All candidates who register for the beta test will receive a $50 discount off the registration fee. Candidates who pass the exam and meet all eligibility requirements will earn the CNL certification. Candidates who do not pass the exam during the beta test will receive a one-time $50 discount to retest. To take advantage of this cost-savings opportunity, you must complete the hard copy of the application posted online here and submit the application by Friday, March 1, 2013. Beta test participants will receive their exam results via email approximately four weeks after the testing period. Successful candidates will receive an email notification of passing only – a score and diagnostic score report will not be provided to the candidate. Unsuccessful candidates will receive an email notification of failing the exam along with the score and diagnostic score report.

20. New Partnerships and Grant-Funded Initiatives
  • Dr. Cindy Selleck, associate dean for clinical affairs and partnerships from the University of Alabama Birmingham, has receive a three-year, $1.4-million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to develop and implement an innovative interprofessional collaborative health-care practice model that improves quality of care and outcomes for underserved patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions.   • New York University College of Nursing’s Dr. Judith Haber, associate dean, graduate programs, and the Ursula Springer Leadership Professor in Nursing received a three-year, $1.2M Advanced Nursing Education Program (ANE Program) grant, “Teaching Oral-Systemic Health” (TOSH), from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Funding under the ANE Program goes to support the enhancement of advanced nursing education and practice.  The TOSH initiative is designed to implement an innovative, replicable, curricular model for developing interprofessional oral health competencies for primary care Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Nurse-Midwives (NM) by integrating oral-systemic health as a curricular thread in primary care NP and NM graduate programs and developing an evidence-based “best practice” model for integrating oral-systemic health in primary care clinical settings. The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Nursing now is the first and only public university in the state approved to offer a nine-semesters program from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree to a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nurse Anesthesia. Pending approval by the national Council on Accreditation (COA) of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, UTHealth could admit the first BSN to DNP class no later than the 2013-14 year.   • Million Hearts has launched an educational module as part of the National Interprofessional Education and Practice Consortium to Advance Million Hearts. Several colleges across the country are participating by having their students complete the module, which takes approximately 4 hours. At the end of the module, there is a mechanism for students to enter data on the 10 people for whom they conducted Million Hearts screening and/or education, so there can be tracking on the number of people reached through this effort. This module is intended to help students learn about how they can impact population health through Million Hearts and assist DHHS in preventing 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.   • The National Academies of Practice (NAP) invites health professional colleagues to its 31st Annual Meeting, April 5-6, in Alexandria, VA. The IPEC domains of communication, ethics, shared roles and responsibilities and teamwork frame the conference. Composed of 10 academies, NAP was founded in 1981 as an interdisciplinary policy advisory group and  membership in NAP honors practitioners, scholars and policy fellows.   • The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) has established the Sigma Theta Tau International Global Research Grant in honor of CEO Patricia E. Thompson, EdD, RN, FAAN. This grant of US $12,000 (maximum) will be awarded to a nurse researcher whose work is focused on responding to health disparities globally. Annual funding is provided by the Foundation’s Patricia E.   • Ensuring that nurses play a central role in the application of genomics to clinical care is at the core of the 2013 Genomics Special Issue of the Journal of Nursing Scholarship. The Issue explores genomic variation and its clinical implications for common diseases in pediatric and adult patients such as cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, and cancer with the implications for nursing practice. Highlights include the genomics of common health conditions, emerging genomic science and technology, and the ethical, legal, social and nursing research issues associated with the translation of genomics into healthcare.
