Nederlands Mathematisch Congres 2025
|
Het 60e Nederlands Mathematisch Congres (NMC) vindt plaats op 22 en 23 april 2025 in Soesterberg. Dit historische evenement, dat zes decennia van uitmuntendheid in de wiskunde viert, is bedoeld voor alle wiskundigen, van zuiver tot toegepast, en van promovendus tot chief technology officer, van leraar op een middelbare school tot hoogleraar.
Plenaire lezingen worden gegeven door Benjamin Gess (Technische Universität Berlin en Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Science, Leipzig), Corina Tarnita (Princeton University) en Jacob Tsimerman (University of Toronto). Tijdens het NMC kun je ook parallelsessies bijwonen van de onderzoeksclusters, Gravitatieprogramma's, Young KWG, 4TU.AMI en AIM die de ontwikkelingen in hun vakgebied zullen presenteren. Er zullen veel netwerkmogelijkheden zijn, je kunt deelnemen aan workshops, paneldiscussies, speeddates en presentaties op maat voor alle niveaus! Mis de 60e editie van het NMC niet! Het wiskundefestival Mathfest komt naar Nederland! Doe mee op zondag 11 mei
|
Voor de eerste keer organiseren we in Nederland het wiskunde festival Het festival zal plaatsvinden op zondag 11 mei in Utrecht, bij Fort aan de Klop. Doe mee met deze feestelijke dag waarin wiskunde centraal zal staan, op een creatieve en speelse manier en toegankelijk voor iedereen! We zien dit festival als een feest van inclusiviteit en diversiteit in de wiskunde, en de wetenschap in het algemeen. Voor het programma hebben we wiskundigen uit het hele land gevraagd om hun enthousiasme en creatieve activiteiten met het publiek te delen. Een festival jullie willen niet missen! Subsidie van Bètadecanen Outreach 2026
|
De call van de Bètadecanen voor outreachprojecten is open! Projecten op het gebied van natuurkunde, scheikunde, wiskunde, informatica of domeinoverstijgend (STEM) kunnen een aanvraag indienen. Het is hierbij belangrijk dat het project aan tenminste één Nederlandse universiteit verbonden is. De aanvraag kan worden gedaan voor één, twee of drie kalenderjaren. De maximale bijdrage aan een project is €40.000,- per jaar. Bij een toekenning voor drie jaar is de maximale bijdrage dus €120.000.
Heeft u een idee dat kan helpen in een positievere beeldvorming van wiskunde onder leerlingen of het wiskundeonderwijs kan ondersteunen? Wilt u hierover sparren en feedback ontvangen op uw voorstel? Nazomercursus
(voorheen vakantiecursus) voor wiskundeleraren 2025

De NWA ORC “Nieuwe vormen van symmetrie” call staat nu online. Als je wilt deelnemen aan deze thema-oproep, zorg er dan voor dat je deelneemt aan twee komende workshops: op 14 april en 8 mei. Je kunt deelnemen als onderzoeker, docent, of wetenschapscommunicator. NWA ORC projecten hebben altijd een sterke educatieve en wetenschapscommunicatieve component nodig. Lees meer via deze link. Er is ook een mailinglijst, zodat u op de hoogte kunt blijven van collega's die geïnteresseerd zijn in deze oproep.

Informatiesessie over ERC-subsidies op 23 mei |
De ERC Working Group ondersteunt wiskundigen in Nederland bij hun aanvraag voor een Starting, Consolidator of Advanced Grant. Op 23 mei is er een informatiesessie voor wiskundigen over ERC-beurzen aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. David Holmes, Jan Vonk en Johannes Schmidt-Hieber zullen hun ervaringen delen met het verkrijgen van een ERC grant, en Stéphanie van der Pas zal een algemene inleiding geven over het aanvraagproces. Op onze website kun je meer informatie vinden over ERC-subsidie en de bijeenkomst op de 23e, met een inschrijfformulier. Schrijf je in vóór 15 mei.

4TU.AMI Education Day op 19 mei
|
De Education Day heeft als doel docenten te informeren en inspireren door de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in het wiskundeonderwijs te verkennen. Het biedt ook een platform om ervaringen te delen, samenwerking te bevorderen en een sterke onderwijsgemeenschap op te bouwen. Deze jaarlijkse Education Days zullen de Inter TU Studiedagen opvolgen (voor het laatst gehouden in 2019). De langetermijnvisie van 4TU.AMI is om de banden tussen universiteiten te versterken, de uitwisseling van best practices aan te moedigen en elkaar te ondersteunen bij het aanpakken van onderwijsuitdagingen. 4TU.Schools lanceert nieuw platform met innovatieve lesmodules
|
4TU.Schools is een nieuw initiatief dat docenten ondersteunt met innovatieve lesmodules en een inspirerend platform voor bèta- en techniekonderwijs. 4TU.Schools is de nieuwe benaming van 4TU.VO. Op maandag 14 april 2025 vindt de online lancering van het platform plaats voor docenten in het voortgezet onderwijs, betrokkenen bij 4TU.VO en stakeholders. Bridges Conferentie in Eindhoven |
De 2025 Bridges conferentie vindt plaats van 14-18 juli op de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven in Eindhoven, Nederland. Als u overweegt om aanwezig te zijn, kunt u de lijst met plenaire sprekers en het voorlopige schema bekijken. Kom regelmatig terug voor updates over de conferentie. We hopen je daar te zien!

Abelprijs naar Masaki Kashiwara!
|
De Japanse wiskundige Masaki Kashiwara van de Universiteit van Kyoto is de winnaar van de Abelprijs 2025! Kashiwara ontvangt de Abelprijs "voor zijn fundamentele bijdragen aan de algebraïsche analyse en representatietheorie, met name de ontwikkeling van de theorie van D-modules en de ontdekking van kristalbases." U kunt meer lezen op de website van de organisatie. De aankondiging is hier terug te zien. De ceremonie vindt plaats op 20 mei!
Wat heel bijzonder is dit jaar is dat er voor het eerst een delegatie van zes leerlingen uit Nederland deel zullen nemen aan het evenement, met twee begeleiders! Ze zullen naar Oslo gaan om de festiviteiten rondom de uitreiking van de Abelprijs 2025 bij te wonen. De leerlingen zijn Ingmar Guns (4e klas), Anuraag Nayak (5e klas),
David Sierra (5e klas) en Zyan Jiang (5e klas). Ze zullen naar Oslo
gaan, samen met hun begeleiders Lammert Westerdijk en Wietske de Vos, om
de festiviteiten rondom de uitreiking van de Abelprijs 2025 bij te
wonen. Wil Schilders, directeur van PWN en president van ICIAM, is ook
uitgenodigd om de festiviteiten bij te wonen.
Maandagochtend is er de uitreiking van de Holmboe Prijs. Dit is in de eerste plaats een prijs voor een wiskundeleraar en een aantal jonge middelbare scholieren die een prijs hebben gewonnen, zij zullen hun werk presenteren. Daar geeft de Abelprijswinnaar de jonge deelnemers een klein cadeau - een boek - en worden ze voorgesteld aan de minister van Onderwijs. In de middag is er een programma voor de scholieren - vorig jaar was dat een bezoek aan een bedrijf zoals Google of Microsoft. Dinsdag is er een sessie met de Abel laureaat en het prijscomité. Ze zullen horen over wat het is om een succesvol wiskundige te zijn. In de middag is dan de prijsuitreiking, waarschijnlijk door de Noorse kroonprins. Woensdag zijn de Abel-lezingen: Deze vinden plaats in de universiteit met allerlei voordrachten, en 's avonds is er een feest bij de Noorse Academie waarvoor de leerlingen ook bij worden uitgenodigd.

Save the Date: Workshop “AI in het wiskundeonderwijs” voor docenten
|
In deze summerschool zul je in vijf dagen ondergedompeld worden in verschillende aspecten van AI tools, zoals de ethische kant, de werking en wat kan het betekenen voor de student en/of docent. Daarnaast ga je aan de slag met verschillende AI tools en leer je de toepassingen ervan. De summerschool is van 21 Juli tot 25 Juli op het Utrecht Science Park in Utrecht. De kosten zijn €100 voor de week, inclusief lunch. Ben je geïnteresseerd in wat je met AI in het wiskundeonderwijs kan? Meld je dan aan via Utrecht Summerschool.

Tim van Erven nieuwe voorzitter van commissie Onderzoek |
Tim van Erven volgt Walter van Suijlekom op als voorzitter van de Commissie Onderzoek (CO) van PWN. Tim is universitair hoofddocent aan het Korteweg-de Vries Instituut voor Wiskunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Zijn onderzoek gaat over de wiskundige grondslagen van machine learning. De Commissie Onderzoek (CO) van PWN ziet het als haar taak het onderzoeksklimaat voor de Wiskunde in Nederland in brede zin te bewaken en te monitoren, zowel financieel, inhoudelijk als organisatorisch.

Netherlands Mathematical Congress 2025

The 60th Netherlands Mathematical Congress (NMC) takes place on April 22-23, 2025 in Soesterberg. This landmark event, celebrating six decades of excellence in mathematics, is aimed at all mathematicians, from pure to applied, and from PhD student to chief technology officer, from high-school teacher to full professor.
Plenary lectures will be given by Benjamin Gess (Technische Universität Berlin and Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Science, Leipzig), Corina Tarnita (Princeton University) and Jacob Tsimerman (University of Toronto). During the NMC you can also attend parallel sessions by the research clusters, Gravitation programmes, YoungKWG, 4TU.AMI and AIM who will present the developments in their field. There will be many networking opportunities, you can participate in workshops, panel discussions, speed dates and presentations tailored for all levels! Don’t miss the 60th edition of the NMC! Mathfest is coming to the Netherlands! Join us on Sunday 11 May

For the first time in the Netherlands, we are organising the mathematics festival Mathfest! The festival will take place on Sunday 11 May in Utrecht, at Fort aan de Klop. Join us for this festive day where mathematics will be central, in a creative and playful way and accessible to everyone! We see this festival as a celebration of inclusivity and diversity in mathematics, and science in general. The NWA ORC "New types of Symmetry" call is now online. If you want to take part in this theme call, make sure that you participate in two upcoming workshops: on April 14 and May 8. You can participate either as a researcher or as an educator or science communicator. NWA ORC projects always need a strong educational and science communication component. Read more via this link. There is also a mailing list if you want to stay connected with the colleagues who are interested in this call.

Information session about ERC grants on the 23rd of May
|
The ERC Working Group supports mathematicians in the Netherlands with their application for a Starting, Consolidator or Advanced Grant. On the 23rd of May there will be an information session for mathematicians about ERC grants at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. 4TU.AMI Education day on May 19!
|
The Education Day aims to inform and inspire educators by exploring the latest developments in mathematics education. It also provides a platform for sharing experiences, fostering collaboration, and building a strong teaching community. These annual Education Days will succeed the Inter TU Study Days (last held in 2019). The long-term vision of 4TU.AMI is to strengthen connections between universities, encourage the exchange of best practices, and support one another in addressing educational challenges. Bridges Conference in Eindhoven

The 2025 Bridges conference will take place 14–18 July at the Eindhoven University of Technology in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Abel prize to Masaki Kashiwara
|
Japanese mathematician Masaki Kashiwara of Kyoto University is the winner of the 2025 Abel Prize! Kashiwara will receive the Abel Prize "for his fundamental contributions to algebraic analysis and representation theory, in particular the development of the theory of D-modules and the discovery of crystal bases." You can read more on the organization's website. You can watch the announcement of the Abel Prize here. The ceremony will take place on May 20!
What is very special this year is that for the first time a delegation of six pupils from the Netherlands will participate in the event, with two supervisors! The pupils are Ingmar Guns (4th grade), Anuraag Nayak (5th grade),
David Sierra (5th grade) and Zyan Jiang (5th grade). They will travel to
Oslo, together with their supervisors Lammert Westerdijk and Wietske de
Vos, to attend the festivities surrounding the awarding of the Abel
Prize 2025. Wil Schilders, director of PWN and president of ICIAM, has
also been invited to attend the festivities. On Monday morning there will be the Holmboe Prize award ceremony. This is primarily a prize for a mathematics teacher and a number of young high school students who have won a prize, they will present their work. There the Abel Prize winner will give the young participants a small gift - a book - and they will be introduced to the Minister of Education. In the afternoon there will be a program for the students - last year that was a visit to a company such as Google or Microsoft. On Tuesday there will be a session with the Abel laureate and the prize committee. They will hear about what it is like to be a successful mathematician. In the afternoon there will be the award ceremony, probably by the Norwegian Crown Prince. Wednesday are the Abel lectures: These take place at the university with all kinds of presentations, and in the evening there is a party at the Norwegian Academy to which the students are also invited.

Tim van Erven new chair of the Research Committee of PWN |
Tim van Erven succeeds Walter van Suijlekom as chairman of the Research Committee of PWN. Tim is an associate professor at the Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. His research concerns the mathematical foundations of machine learning. The Research Committee (CO) of PWN monitors the research climate for Mathematics in the Netherlands in the broadest sense, both financially, substantively and organizationally.
