December 2007

The StudioKat Designs Newsletter

HELLO and Welcome!- Every year I'm involved in a huge Christmas production at my church. I love it, but it's very time-consuming & I rarely get anything done to prepare for Christmas until its over. Today is our last day of performances, so as much as I'd like to sleep in tomorrow, I won't be. I bet you have a lot to do this month too, but I hope you'll take time to read my newsletter first! Here goes!
Also, especially for the convenience of our friends at Pattern Review & AOL, all of the hotlinks are listed in order at the bottom of this letter, and as always, if you prefer, you can go to to see the online version of the newsletter.

Feline Quote for December- "If cats could talk- They wouldn't!   Nan Porter

New on my Website!-
Janet Martel (otherwise known as "Mom" to me) of Advance, NC submitted this picture of two beautiful PortaPockets inserts she made as gifts for Christmas. She says the only thing she enjoys more than the compliments she gets on her workmanship, is the bragging she gets to do about the designer! (Oh MOM!)

Bring Out the Inner Designer in YOU!- InnerFrenchGirl.Com
Do you love Project Runway? Would you love to create fashions for yourself that more closely resemble the ones coming down the runways today? Then you need to visit InnerFrenchGirl.Com. December is usually a quiet month on my website. Folks are busy, busy, busy doing so many other things than sewing during this month of parties, family gatherings and pageants. In order to give you a jumpstart on your January sewing, and as a way of thanking you for being such loyal readers, StudioKat Designs has a Christmas present for YOU! Just click here to see what it is, and to take advantage of this limited time offer!

Quotation of the Month-
"Everywhere is within walking distance, if you have the time." Steven Wright

A Cool Place to Shop!- WhirlyGigStore.Com
For the garden lover on your list, you simply MUST visit the WhirlyGigStore.Com. I just recently discovered these whimsical decorations, and I am smitten. My two favorites are the Black Cat Whirly, and the Cat Lantern, just in case anyone in my family is reading this. (Hint Hint)

Your cat might own you sleep in the same position all night because it annoys your cat(s) when you move.

Surf HERE for Neat INFO!- Talking Turkey
With one "turkey holiday" down, and one to go, you might be looking for some fresh ideas, to mix things up for your company. covers all things turkey, including purchasing, thawing, preparing, seasoning, roasting, frying, smoking, grilling, stuffing, carving, and storing. And since man cannot live on turkey alone, there's also recipes for great appetizers, side dishes, (I'm interested in the Boursin Mashed Potatoes), desserts, (check out the Cranberry Blueberry Pie), and leftovers.

Laws Overlooked by Murphy-
"If you buy some bananas before they are ripe, there won't be any left by the time they are ripe. If you buy them ripe, they rot before they are eaten".

Love Handbags?- ElissaBloom.Com
This is the time of year for Christmas & New Years parties, and that means you'll need a glitzy handbag or clutch to top off that new outfit. What?!? You forgot about that? Well no problem, because ElissaBloom.Com just might have the bag you've been looking for! I recommend you check out the jewel handbags, they're fabulous! I also like the Ovarian Cancer Rose Clutch. (A portion of the proceeds from sale of this clutch is donated to the National Ovarian Cancer Coaliton.)

New Word of the Month-
"Flabbergasted": Appalled at discovering how much weight one has gained over the holidays.

Sewing Tip of the Month-
Before you start sewing your item, make sure you have read the instructions thoroughly... TWICE ! Follow each step carefully, and in order. There's always a reason why the steps are in the order that they are, so resist the temptation to skip or swap steps around!
Do you have a sewing tip you'd like to share with everyone? Send it in to so we can ALL improve!

Did You Know?- It is physically impossible for pigs to look up into the sky?

A Cool Internet Activity- LetsSayThanks.Com
This website will give you an opportunity to show your appreciation and support to a member of our armed forces serving overseas. In just three easy steps, you can send a FREE printed postcard to a US soldier, thanking them for their service to our country. Interested? First, click here to pick out your card, personalize it with a message, your name and hometown, and hit SEND! In three easy steps, you'll brighten a soldier's day, and you might be amazed how good it makes you feel as well!

Surf HERE for FUN!- Organize Your Stuff
Before you get new stuff this holiday season, get a better handle on the stuff you already own. MyThings.Com is a global online registry to help you organize and manage your belongings. You create a list of items on your MyThings Portfolio, then the site will give you free valuation and market estimator services, help you find warranties and owners manuals, and even simplify the process of selling, recycling, or donating items you no longer want.

Question of the Month-Did you know that honey is the only food that does not spoil?

Quiltshop Spotlight- Rose Cottage Quilts
I met a lot of really nice people at Market this year, one of which was Deanna Hodson of Rose Cottage Quilts . Deanna does some GREAT looking quilts, and here's the cool part, she likes to design her pieces around treasured family textiles, like handkerchiefs, tablecloths and the like. You can see some examples of her work, and check out her quilt patterns by visiting her website.

Monthly Trivia- Did you know that 20% of all ties are bought as Christmas gifts? (That probably explains why December is National Tie Month!) But additionally, this percentage has not changed, even though men wear ties 58% less to work than they did in 1997. I guess the tie industry feels great about this, but I'm not sure men do!
And here's a cool thing, on this day in 1968, Elvis Presley's Christmas TV special aired on NBC-TV & captured 42% of the audience. Though it was billed as a Yuletide show, it only contained one seasonal tune, that being "Blue Christmas". It has long been labeled as Elvis's legendary comeback show.
December 3rd is the birthday of several entertainment icons. Andy Williams, is celebrating his 77th birthday today, and even so, still performs 2 shows a day, 5 days a week, in his Branson, MO nightclub. Amazing! Daryl Hannah, who first caught JFK Jr's eye as a mermaid in "Splash", is 46 today. She's sharing her birthday cake with Katarina Witt, world champion figure skater. And who would have ever thought that Ozzy Osbourne would make it to his 59th birthday. Ozzy was the lead vocalist for the 70's heavy-metal band, Black Sabbath, but may be best known for his twisted family reality show that eventually turned into a massive cult-like phenomenon when Ozzy & his family expletived their way thru a weekly visit to their home.
And if today is YOUR birthday, here's a great big StudioKat Designs "Happy Birthday to YOU!" And if today is not your birthday, you really don't have time to be celebrating right now! Get busy! Hit the road! Get cooking! There'll be plenty enough time for celebrating later on this month!

Studiokat Designs wishes you a warm and wonderful Christmas and a New Year full of good health and happiness!

Well, that's it for now, so until next month, remember!
Sewing Forever, Housework Whenever!
