Epilepsy Foundation

January  2015

Dr. Gary Mathern, a highly respected Pediatric Epilepsy Surgeon and researcher appointed to Endowed Chair
Dr. Gary Mathern has been honored by  being appointed to  Nina's endowed chair at UCLA.
He is world renowned for his work in diagnosing and surgically treating epilepsy in infants.
He has saved and improved the lives of hundreds of infants through his work. His expertise in the use of a hemispherectomy has been instrumental in treating infants with
intractable epilepsy.
We are very pleased as our daughter, Nina, would be by his appointement which is retroactive to April, 2014.
More about Dr. Mathern....
Dr. Mathern teaches several undergraduate courses in the Interdepartmental Program for Neuroscience; teaches neurosurgery residents, and basic scientists; and mentors several pre-doctoral, post-doctoral and medical students in his laboratory. Dr. Mathern is regularly invited to lecture at national and international meetings.
He is very active in service at the university level; similarly, he is on the editorial boards of several major subspecialty journals and regularly serves as ad hoc reviewer for the NIH and international research granting agencies.
He has also been very active and, in fact, developed and directed several non-profit organizations devoted to educating the public about this treatable disease and reducing the stigma of epilepsy.
The criteria set forth for this Chair include excellent clinical skills, provision of compassionate patient care, active scientific research in epilepsy, and a commitment to teaching both at UCLA and in the community about epilepsy.
Dr. Mathern distinguishes himself in each of these areas and provides visionary leadership in pediatric epilepsy
