Two Women, Two Roles and Two Academy Award Nominations: The Leading Ladies of ROMA

Marina de Tavira was never expecting an Oscar nomination for supporting actress for her role in ROMA. In fact, she was at home getting her son ready to go to school when her phone exploded with congratulatory messages. Unlike some of her past roles, the process of shooting ROMA was a completely foreign way of approaching her work. Marina was quoted in El Heraldo De Mexico, “Understanding the work on the first day was complicated. There I started giving birth to the character.”

Performances don’t just happen. It is clear that there was a lot of hard work involved in creating the reality on set for the actors to flourish. From the hair and make-up department to the costumes and set decoration, the world the actors lived in helped them create their characters and find their voices. For Yalitza Aparicio, who was encouraged by her sister to attend an open call in her home state of Oaxaca, won her role after multiple auditions.

The actors were given pages each day, they went to work and though they relied on the script, they also had room to improvise. The actors were able to marry their own interpretations of the script with direction from writer/director Alfonso Cuarón. Both Yalitza and Marina trusted Alfonso to help curate the existence and story of their characters. From there, they relied on what was in their hearts to allow themselves to be fully immersed into each and every scene.

Cuarón has been very vocal in numerous interviews, giving praise to both Yalitza Aparicio and Marina De Tavira. I personally have fallen in love with both of these performances. In truth, Marina’s expertise as an actress raised the bar for everyone around her and I can’t wait to see what she does next. I'm looking forward to Yalitza's next role, where she can continue to flourish. Taking the time to nourish and build these characters took a unified effort and clearly the results have paid off.
ROMA is nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role Yalitza Aparicio, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Marina de Tavira, Best Director Alfonso Cuarón and Best Picture.
