Nicos Starreveld: nationale PR coördinator bij PWN
|
Per 1 september is Nicos Starreveld aangenomen bij PWN en 4TU.AMI als nationale PR-coördinator. Nicos zal verantwoordelijk zijn voor en een coördinerende rol vervullen binnen het communicatie- en outreachbeleid van PWN en 4TU.AMI. In de komende weken zal hij vooral rondreizen om kennis te maken met de commissies en de mensen binnen de twee organisaties. Hij zal heel nauw werken met de verschillende commissies richting een betere beeldvorming van wiskunde in Nederland! U kunt hem het makkelijkst bereiken via n.j.starreveld@uva.nl.

Oproep tot nominaties voor de N.G. de Bruijnprijs 2025
|
In 2025 zal de driejaarlijkse N.G. de Bruijnprijs opnieuw worden uitgereikt tijdens het Nederlands Mathematisch Congres (NMC). De prijs voor 2025 wordt uitgereikt voor het beste wiskundige werk dat in de jaren 2022 tot en met 2024 in een collegiaal getoetst tijdschrift is verschenen. De prijs wordt beschikbaar gesteld door Elsevier, uitgever van KWG's wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Indagationes Mathematicae. Genomineerden voor de prijs hebben de Nederlandse nationaliteit, wonen in Nederland of zijn verbonden aan een Nederlands instituut. De laureaat ontvangt een medaille, een oorkonde en 4000 euro. De laureaat geeft een plenaire lezing tijdens het NMC en het Nieuw Archief voor Wiskunde (NAW) publiceert een interview met de laureaat of een artikel van de laureaat voor een breed publiek.
Particulieren kunnen een kandidaat voordragen door een voordrachtsbrief te sturen naar de voorzitter van de jury voor de N.G. de Bruijnprijs, prof.dr. Jasper Stokman J.V.Stokman@uva.nl vóór 1 oktober 2024.

Publicatie van ITW Nieuws op de website
|
Aan het begin van de negentiger jaren ontstond binnen het KWG de wens om de toegepaste wiskundige een zichtbaarder plaats te geven. Binnen het KWG bestuur was hier druk over gediscussieerd, en Prof. Bram van der Sluis (Utrecht) kreeg de opdracht om een werkgroep te formeren die de industriële en toegepaste wiskunde in Nederland meer zichtbaarheid zou geven. Van der Sluis nam contact op met Bob Mattheij, hoogleraar aan de TU Eindhoven, en Wil Schilders, werkzaam bij Philips. Resultaat was de oprichting van de Stichting Industriële en Toegepaste Wiskunde, kortweg ITW, rond 1991. Jaap Molenaar en Sjoerd Rienstra (beiden TU Eindhoven) werden bereid gevonden als hoofdredacteuren van het nieuw op te richten blad ITW Nieuws. In de loop der jaren groeide het blad uit tot een mooi magazine, met interviews, aankondigingen van symposia met klinkende namen als ‘’De waarde van de eigenwaarde’’, technische artikelen etc. ITW had een actieve redactie, waarin o.a. mensen als Gerard Alberts (VU) en Frits van Beckum (UT) een rol speelden. In zekere zin was het een voorloper van ‘’Nieuw Archief nieuwe stijl’’ zoals dat aan het begin van deze eeuw ontstond.
Recent heeft de bibliotheek van de TU in Eindhoven het blad ‘’ITW Nieuws’’ helemaal gedigitaliseerd. PWN heeft deze uitgaven nu beschikbaar gemaakt onder het tabblad ‘’Historisch’’ op haar website. Hier kunnen alle exemplaren ingekeken en gedownload worden. Het is bijzonder om te zien dat allerlei artikelen en meningen nog steeds heel erg actueel zijn. De Prijzen commissie van PWN
|
PWN heeft recent een werkgroep opgericht om Prijzen te stimuleren voor wiskundigen werkzaam in Nederland. Deze werkgroep houdt zich bezig met het stimuleren van internationale prijzen voor de Nederlandse wiskunde-gemeenschap. Onder prijzen wordt ook verstaan prestigieuze lezingen bij vooraanstaande internationale congressen en eervolle fellowships van internationale learned societies (bijv. AMS of SIAM). Het doel is de Nederlandse wiskunde internationaal meer zichtbaar te maken en daarmee haar aantrekkelijkheid te vergroten en meer kansen te creëren voor carrière- en financieringsmogelijkheden van wiskundigen.

Werkwijze: de werkgroep werkt in nauw contact met de Nederlandse wiskunde-gemeenschap. Voor het stimuleren van erkenning en prijzen richt men zich o.a. op:
– Informatie delen over mogelijke internationale prijzen via verschillende kanalen, o.a. door regelmatige contacten met de wiskunde-instituten, de wiskunde-clusters, en andere gremia,
– In samenwerking met de instituten kansrijke kandidaten identificeren,
– Collega’s benaderen om mogelijke kansrijke kandidaten te nomineren,- Overzicht van prijswinnaars plaatsen op de PWN-website, enz.
De rol van de werkgroep is primair ondersteunend. Waar mogelijk neemt de werkgroep actief initiatief om meer nominaties te stimuleren. Het schrijven van nominaties is echter aan de wiskunde-instituten.

Math4NL Community Event 2024
|
Op 11 oktober 2024 zal het jaarlijkse Math4NL Community Event plaatsvinden, met als gastheer het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS). Het thema is ditmaal ‘’simulation techniques and synthetic data’’. Hoofdspreker zal zijn Klaas-Jan van Heeringen. Hij is een waterbouwkundig ingenieur met een brede ervaring in zowel de waterkwantiteit als de waterkwaliteitsaspecten van stedelijke en landelijke drainage en hydrologie, evenals het real-time gebruik ervan in systemen voor vroegtijdige waarschuwing. Hij zal spreken over ‘’Numbers in water: real-time mathematics in water management’’. Medailles voor Nederlandse studenten bij IMC 2024
|
Studenten van de wiskundeopleidingen van de universiteiten van Amsterdam, Groningen, Leiden, en Utrecht hebben meegedaan met de International Mathematics Competition in Blagojevgrad, Bulgarije. De Amsterdamse equipe heeft twee zilveren en een bronzen medaille behaald, naast vijf eervolle vermeldingen. De studenten uit Groningen hebben twee eervolle vermeldingen gekregen, en het team uit Utrecht heeft drie medailles gewonnen, één van ieder eremetaal, en nog een eervolle vermelding. Het Utrechtse goud is voor Lammert Westerdijk met 72 punten. Het Leidse team spant de kroon met tweemaal zilver, goud voor Samuel Tiersma (57 punten) en Lance Bakker (56) en een ‘Grand Grand First Prize’ voor Casper Madlener, die wereldwijd nipt als vierde eindigde met 80 van de 100 punten.

Carrièredag Beta in Bestuur en Beleid (BiBB)
|
Op 20 november 2024 vindt de 3e editie van de Bèta in Bestuur & Beleid (BiBB) carrièredag plaats. De BiBB carrièredag is special bedoeld voor masterstudenten, promovendi en postdocs met een bèta/techniek achtergrond die willen bijdragen aan het oplossen van grote maatschappelijke problemen. Het doel van deze dag is om bèta wetenschappers (incl. technici) dichter bij politiek, bestuur en beleid te brengen. Laat je inspireren door onze sprekers die in verschillende fases van hun carrière (van early/mid career tot gerenommeerd) werkzaam zijn in bestuur en beleid.
Enkele van onze plenaire sprekers zijn: Vinod Subramaniam (voorzitter; College van Bestuur Universiteit Twente) en Merei Wagenaar (executive director; UN Global Compact Network Netherlands). Daarnaast is er ook een netwerkborrel en zullen verschillende organisaties die een rol spelen binnen de publieke zaak aanwezig zijn om je meer te vertellen over de verschillende carrièremogelijkheden. Nationale wetenschapscommunicatiedag
|
Op maandag 14 oktober vindt de Nationale wetenschapscommunicatiedag plaats, een jaarlijks terugkerend evenement van NWO/VSC, speciaal voor iedereen die zich bezighoudt met wetenschapscommunicatie. Van wetenschappers, journalisten tot communicatiemedewerkers: iedereen is welkom. Het thema voor dit jaar is “Navigeren in de Tussentijd”. Wiskunde is tot nu toe weinig aanwezig (geweest) op zulke evenementen, waar contacten gelegd kunnen worden met wetenschapsjournalisten. Uitdagingen voor energiesystemen en hun wiskundige oplossingen - Resultaten van een brainstormsessie
|
Ons energiesysteem moet veranderen van een systeem gebaseerd op fossiele brandstoffen naar een systeem gebaseerd op duurzame energie. Dit brengt grote uitdagingen met zich mee, zoals het vergroten van de veerkracht van het energiesysteem tegen toekomstige (prijs)verstoringen en het verder optimaliseren van het gebruik van de bestaande capaciteit. De innovatiecommissie van PWN en Math4NL organiseerden een brainstormsessie met wiskundigen en stakeholders in energiesystemen. Het doel van deze sessie was om duidelijke toekomstige doelen te stellen die moeten worden aangepakt en om nieuwe onderzoekssamenwerkingen te stimuleren.
De ideeën en doelen die tijdens de brainstormsessie zijn besproken, zijn opgeschreven in een whitepaper en een infographic. Deze whitepaper heeft 4 belangrijke innovatierichtingen geïdentificeerd waar wiskunde een beslissende impact kan hebben op uitdagingen in energiesystemen. Door dit whitepaper en de bijbehorende infographic te verspreiden, willen we samenwerkingsverbanden stimuleren om deze innovatierichtingen op te pakken. Math Open Access (MathOA)
|
Jop Briët, David Holmes en Ross Kang (leden van de Publicatiecommissie van PWN) hebben zich aangesloten bij een nieuw initiatief van MathOA om (Diamond) Open Access publiceren in de wiskunde te bevorderen. Door middel van een brede Nederlandse sponsoring hebben zij een 10K EUR startup fonds opgezet voor het oprichten van nieuwe Diamond Open Access tijdschriften in de wiskunde. Diamond betekent dat er geen kosten in rekening worden gebracht, niet aan lezers en niet aan bijdragers. De oproep, die werd onderschreven door onder andere Timothy Gowers, staat nu open voor aanvragen tot half december. Voel je vrij om deze oproep te verspreiden onder mogelijk geïnteresseerde collega's.

DUCOMS 2024 (Computational Science)
|
Op 12 november 2024 zal de tweede editie van DUCOMS plaatsvinden, ‘’the Dutch Computational Science Day’’. Deze nationale conferentie brengt professionals op het gebied van computationele wetenschappen samen uit alle disciplines en carrièreniveaus, zowel uit de academische wereld als de industrie. De DUCOMS-dag behandelt de strategische focusgebieden van de nationale agenda en omvat interdisciplinaire keynotes en parallelle sessies over:
· Ultrasnelle computersimulaties met behulp van machine learning
· Data-gedreven methoden
· Multischaalmodellering en simulatie
· Onzekerheidsanalyse in computationele wetenschappen
· Energiezuinig computergebruik

Europese Academie van Wetenschappen viert benoeming van speciale EU-commissaris voor startups, onderzoek en innovatie |
Ekaterina Zaharieva is benoemd tot commissaris voor start-ups, onderzoek en innovatie. Dit betekent een belangrijke verandering, want het maakt een einde aan de eerdere opeenstapeling van verantwoordelijkheden over meerdere portefeuilles, zoals het geval was onder Mariya Gabriel. Met deze nieuwe, gerichte rol wordt een duidelijk pad gevormd naar het bevorderen van welvaart, comfort en welzijn in heel Europa, aangedreven door wetenschappelijke innovatie. Deze beslissing sluit perfect aan bij Mario Draghi's visie op een beter Europa met een hogere levenskwaliteit voor iedereen.

De Christiaan Huygens Prijs
|
De feestelijke uitreiking van de Christiaan Huygens wetenschapsprijs vindt plaats op woensdag 16 oktober 2024, 19.00 – 21.00 uur Oude Kerk, Voorburg. De Christiaan Huygens wetenschapsprijs wordt jaarlijks toegekend aan een onderzoeker die een vernieuwende bijdrage aan de wetenschap heeft geleverd. De prijs wordt uitgereikt door de minister of staatssecretaris van OCW en bestaat uit een belastingvrij geldbedrag van tienduizend euro, een bronzen beeld van Christiaan Huygens en een oorkonde. De drie genomineerden zijn Dr. Jan-Willem M. van Ittersum, Dr. Rosa M. Schwarz, en Dr. Lucas F.H. Slot. Aanmelden kan via de website.

Nicos Starreveld as new national PR-coordinator
|
Since September 1st is Nicos Starrevend appointed in PWN and 4TU.AMI as national PR-coordinator. Nicos will coordinate and be responsible for the communication and outreach policies of PWN and 4TU.AMI. In the next weeks Nicos will be traveling to the various stakeholders to meet the committees and the people in the two organisations. He will work closely with the various committees towards a better image of mathematics in the Netherlands! The easiest way to reach out to him is via n.j.starreveld@uva.nl.

Call for nominations for the N.G. de Bruijn prize 2025
|
In 2025 the triennial N.G. de Bruijn prize will be awarded again during the Netherlands Mathematical Congress (NMC). The 2025 prize will be awarded for the best mathematical work that appeared in a peer reviewed journal in the years 2022 through 2024. The prize is provided by Elsevier, publisher of KWG’s scientific journal Indagationes Mathematicae. Nominees for the prize either have the Dutch nationality, or live in The Netherlands, or are affiliated with a Dutch institute.
The laureate receives a medal, a certificate, and EUR 4000. The laureate gives a plenary lecture at the NMC, and the Nieuw Archief voor Wiskunde (NAW) publishes an interview with the laureate or an article aimed at a broad audience written by the laureate. Individuals can nominate a candidate by sending a nomination letter to the chair of the jury for the N.G. de Bruijn Prize, Prof.dr. Jasper Stokman J.V.Stokman@uva.nl before 1 October 2024.

Publication of ITW News on the website
|
At the beginning of the 1990s, a desire arose within the KWG to give the applied mathematician a more visible place. Within the KWG board, there had been busy discussions about this, and Prof Bram van der Sluis (Utrecht) was commissioned to form a working group that would give industrial and applied mathematics in the Netherlands more visibility. Van der Sluis contacted Bob Mattheij, professor at TU Eindhoven, and Wil Schilders, working at Philips.
The result was the establishment of the Industrial and Applied Mathematics Foundation, ITW for short, around 1991. Jaap Molenaar and Sjoerd Rienstra (both TU Eindhoven) were found willing to serve as editors-in-chief of the newly established magazine ITW News.
Over the years, the magazine grew into a fine magazine, with interviews, announcements of symposia with resounding names like ‘’The value of self-esteem‘’, technical articles, etc. ITW had an active editorial team, which included people like Gerard Alberts (VU) and Frits van Beckum (UT). In a sense, it was a forerunner of ‘’New Archive new style‘’ as it emerged at the beginning of this century.
Recently, the TU library in Eindhoven has completely digitised the magazine ‘’ITW News‘’. PWN has now made these issues available under the ‘’Historical‘’ tab on its website. Here, all copies can be viewed and downloaded. It is extraordinary to see that all kinds of articles and opinions are still very much up to date. The Prices Committee of PWN
|
PWN recently set up a working group to encourage Prizes for mathematicians working in the Netherlands.This working group is concerned with stimulating international prizes for the Dutch mathematics community. Prizes include prestigious lectures at leading international conferences and honourable fellowships from international learned societies (e.g. AMS or SIAM). The aim is to make Dutch mathematics more visible internationally, thereby increasing its attractiveness and creating more opportunities for career and funding opportunities for mathematicians.

Working method: the working group works in close contact with the Dutch mathematics community. To encourage recognition and awards, it focuses on, among other things:
- Sharing information about possible international awards through various channels, including through regular contacts with the mathematics institutes, the mathematics clusters, and other bodies,
- Identifying promising candidates in cooperation with the institutes,
- Approaching colleagues to nominate possible promising candidates,- Posting overview of prize winners on the PWN website, etc.
The role of the working group is primarily supportive. Where possible, the working group takes active initiative to encourage more nominations. However, writing nominations is up to the mathematics institutes.

Math4NL Community Event 2024
|
The annual Math4NL Community Event will take place on 11 October 2024, hosted by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The theme this time is ''simulation techniques and synthetic data''. Main speaker will be Klaas-Jan van Heeringen, who is is an operational water management engineer at Deltares, specialized in real-time Flood Early Warning Systems. The title of his talk is ''Numbers in water: real-time mathematics in water management''. Medals for Dutch students at IMC 2024
|
Students from the mathematics programmes of the universities of Amsterdam, Groningen, Leiden, and Utrecht competed in the International Mathematics Competition in Blagojevgrad, Bulgaria. The Amsterdam team won two silver and one bronze medals, in addition to five honourable mentions. The students from Groningen received two honourable mentions, and the team from Utrecht won three medals, one of each, and another honourable mention. The Utrecht gold is for Lammert Westerdijk with 72 points. Career day Beta in Governance and Policy (BiBB)
|
The 3rd edition of the STEM in Governance & Policy (BiBB) career day will take place on 20 November 2024. The BiBB career day is specially intended for master students, PhD students and postdocs with a STEM background who want to contribute to solving major societal problems. The aim of this day is to bring STEM scientists (incl. technicians) closer to politics, governance and policy. Be inspired by our speakers working in governance and policy at different stages of their careers (from early/mid career to renowned).
Some of our plenary speakers are: Vinod Subramaniam (chairman; University of Twente Executive Board) and Merei Wagenaar (executive director; UN Global Compact Network Netherlands). There will also be networking drinks and various organisations that play a role in public affairs will be present to tell you more about the various career opportunities. National Science Communication Day
|
National Science Communication Day is an annual event especially for everyone involved in science communication. From scientists to journalists to communication staff: everyone is welcome. This year's theme is ‘Navigating the Meantime’. Mathematics has so far had (been) little presence at such events, where contacts can be made with science journalists. Energy system challenges and their mathematical solutions - Results of a brainstorm session
|
Our energy system needs to change from one based on fossil-fuel to one based on sustainable energy. This raises significant challenges, such as enhancing the resilience of the energy system against future (price) perturbations and further optimizing the use of the existing capacity. The innovation committee of PWN and Math4NL organized a brainstorm session with mathematicians and stakeholders in energy systems. The goal of this session was to set clear future goals that need to be addressed and to stimulate new research collaborations.

Math Open Access (MathOA)
|
Jop Briët, David Holmes and Ross Kang (members of the PWN Publications committee) have joined a novel initiative of MathOA to promote (Diamond) Open Access publishing in mathematics. Through broad Netherlands-based sponsorship, they have set up a 10K EUR startup fund devoted to the founding of new Diamond Open Access journals in mathematics. Diamond means that no fees are charged, not to readers and not to contributors. The call, which has been endorsed by Timothy Gowers, among others, is now open for applications until mid-December. Please feel free to distribute this call to any potentially interested colleagues.

DUCOMS 2024 (Computational Science)
|
The second edition of DUCOMS, ''the Dutch Computational Science Day'', will take place on 12 November 2024. This national conference brings together computational science professionals from all disciplines and career levels, both from academia and industry. The DUCOMS day addresses the strategic focus areas of the national agenda and includes interdisciplinary keynotes and parallel sessions on:
- Ultra-fast computer simulations using machine learning
- Data-driven methods
- Multi-scale modelling and simulation
- Uncertainty analysis in computational sciences
- Energy-efficient computing

European Academy of Sciences Celebrates Appointment of Dedicated EU Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation
|
Ekaterina Zaharieva has been appointed as dedicated Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation. This marks a significant change, as it puts an end to the previous accumulation of responsibilities across multiple portfolios, as was the case under Mariya Gabriel. With this new, focused role, a clear path is formed toward fostering prosperity, comfort, and welfare throughout Europe, powered by scientific innovation. This decision aligns perfectly with Mario Draghi’s vision for a better Europe with a higher quality of life for all. We encourage you to revisit the letter the Academy of Sciences supported, which was backed by several Nobel laureates and leading figures in European research. (HERE). This collective effort has ensured that research and innovation will now receive the undivided attention it needs at the highest levels of the European Commission.
