Mundelein Community Connection Winter 2023 Newsletter

Mundelein Community Connection (MCC) is a not for profit organization dedicated to the economic development, historic preservation and healthy community spirit of Mundelein’s central business district. Working together we provide an atmosphere where new and established businesses can grow and where families find the hometown they always wanted.

A Message from the Executive Director
It has been a busy “off-season” for MCC. In addition to bingo at Tighthead Brewery every month, we have been planning the summer events. There will be big changes this year for Beerfest, the Arts Festival, Santa’s Cottage and Winterfest! These events are relocating from the Village Hall Plaza to Courtland Commons Park, at the NE corner of Seymour and Courtland streets. And, Winterfest is being combined with the Tree Lighting. Both will be held on Saturday, December 7 th . We are looking forward to the changes, but adjustments to the layouts, set-up public access and parking have required more planning than previous years. In the end, this beautiful new park will make a great location for all these events.

Another big project this winter has been the redesign of the MCC web site by Epic Media, Inc. of Mundelein. Over the years, our webpage grew into a collection of pages, designed by different volunteers, that lack unity and identity. It needed a new, modernized format. Jess Stoffel, owner of Epic Media, has done a great job. Please check it out: www.mundeleincommunityconnection.org.

In addition, over the last few months we have revamped our membership benefits package for all levels: Family/Non-Profit and Business; and, we have added social media coordinator—Sarah Christ—to improve our outreach before, during and after our events. We feel that these changes will enhance communication, increase event attendance and add value for our members, sponsors and benefactors. Look for us on Facebook, Instagram and other social media outlets.

I hope you will support downtown Mundelein by becoming an MCC member, sharing us on social media, and
attending an MCC event this season!

The purpose of Mundelein Community Connection (MCC) is to foster appreciation for, awareness of, and pride in, Downtown Mundelein.  The philosophy of MCC is that a vibrant, active, attractive downtown is beneficial to the whole community.  Promoting the growth and development of the downtown Central Business District through community events, the arts, and historic preservation brings excitement to the heart of the community, which in turn, attracts visitors, promotes investment and fosters economic growth. To accomplish this, it is important to get community members involved. Commitment to downtown by residents, businesses and property owners is essential to achieving our goals. One way we nurture support in our programs and events is through membership support.

MCC has two categories of Membership—Business ($200 per year) and Household/Non-Profit ($45 per year).  This year, the MCC Board has revised the membership benefits to share our success with our loyal members.  MCC uses a rolling membership season, meaning, membership is good for one year from the date of joining.  If you join on April 15, 2024 your renewal date is April 15, 2025.

Tighthead Brewing Company

Tighthead BrewingTighthead Brewing Company is a production brewery and taproom, located at 161 N. Archer Street, across from the Metra Station.   It is a neighborhood institution where friends and families can meet up, enjoy great music, wonderful company, and the best beer in town.

Tighthead opened in 2011 and has been pouring their heart and soul into every glass ever since. Tighthead offers six year-round beers on tap in the taproom and sold in 4 packs throughout Illinois and parts of the Midwest: Comfortably Blonde Ale, Irie IPA, Chilly Water Pale Ale, Scarlet Fire Irish Red Ale, Bear’s Choice IPA and Longsnapper IPA, a collaboration with Patrick Mannelly of the Chicago Bears.   The team at Tighthead also rotates up to10 seasonal and limited release beers throughout the year. Alternatively, non-Tighthead beverages like wine, cider, seltzers, and non-alcoholic beer are also available.

As in traditional English Pubs, the tap room is intended to be "an extension of the family room", explains owner Bruce Dir, “It is a place where everyone is welcome to visit with old friends, make new friends, share the trials and tribulations of the day, or just watch a game and relax”. The taproom offers a wide selection of merchandise for sale, hosts local food trucks on weekends, schedules free live music every Thursday and Pub Trivia every Wednesday, along with monthly Bingo and a variety of “pop-up” events.  Tighthead features an outdoor patio and lawn area; a party room for private parties and seasonal events, and tours upon request.  Tighthead is one of MCC’s most valued partners, so stop in some time, you will be glad you did!  Find out more at www.tightheadbrewing.com.

Farmers Market

Mundelein Farmers MarketThe 2024 Farmers Market opens on Saturday, June 15th from 8 am to noon at the corner of Seymour and Park Streets.  We are expecting another great year.  Market Manager, Becca Merkau, is anticipating over 40 vendors each week!  Interested vendors can fill out the Vendor Application on the Market webpage at  www.mundeleincommunityconnection.org.  Full-time vendor fee is $275 for the season; part-time vendor fee (selected weeks) is $30 per date.

Attention kids ages 3 to 12 years old!  Stop by the MCC tent the first time you visit the Market to register for The Little Farmers Club, a fun weekly opportunity for kids to engage in our local food system and community through educational activities, demonstrations, stories and exposure to a variety of foods.  It’s FREE.  Kids will connect with community members to learn about building a healthy lifestyle and influencing their local food economy.  Members will receive a membership card and a reusable shopping bag to decorate.  Check in at the MCC tent weekly for the day’s activities.  Attend the market and participate in the activities listed for a stamp on the membership card.  Collect 8 stamps by the end the of the season to receive a prize and certificate of completion!

The Mundelein Farmers Market welcomes all volunteers. We invite the community ages 13 and up to be a part of this weekly event. If you like the outdoors, especially in the summer; fresh food; live music; and meeting people, the Mundelein Farmers Market is for you! Volunteers pick the dates and times they would like to help. Come one day or all the days of the market. It’s up to you.  We encourage high school students who need service hours to volunteer. The Market Manager will verify your hours.  Please read the Volunteer Guidelines before volunteering.  If you would like to volunteer, email mundeleincc@gmail.com.  For further information call 847-970-9235.

New MCC Social Media Coordinator

Over the years, as an organization, MCC has struggled to effectively use social media for promoting events and distinguishing our events from those presented by the Village of Mundelein or the Mundelein Park District.  Typically, MCC partners with other local businesses, the Chamber of Commerce or non-profit organizations when organizing an event.  Often, we also pitch in to help with events organized by the Village, like Mundelein Days, The Mundelein Grand Prix Bike Race, and the Tree Lighting.  The end result is MCC tends to fly under the radar.  Therefore, in order to become more visible and distinguish the MCC “Brand” from other organizations we have brought on a social media expert, local resident and business woman-- Sarah Christ.  Sarah has been tasked with promoting MCC events on a variety of social media platforms.  Before, during, and after the event Sarah will post information, pictures, customer comments, etc. on multiple social media platforms.  Our goal is to expand our contacts, increase followers, share more views, get more “likes” and feedback from our customers.  Sarah coordinates with our web page manager, the Farmers Market Manager, Beer Festival Manager and Art Festival Director to unify the messaging.  With Sarah’s help, and the continued efforts of our volunteers, we are joining the digital age.  Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Next Door, etc
