Dear Summer Sing,
What a great first rehearsal! It was such a treat to hear you sing. This year's group is chock full of lovely voices, and we have a terrific balance between the four parts. I was thrilled to see so many new faces along with those of you who are returning!
Choosing music for Summer Sing is always a fun balancing act - I want to make sure that we have songs for everyone. There are people who have not sung for a while who need something catchy and easy to get going again, people who have sung for years who may be looking for a challenge, and of course we always need something lush and gorgeous, just because.
J'entends le Moulin is our "challenge song" for this summer, but luckily, it is so lively and fun that I think we will enjoy the learning process. For those of you who would like to work on this at home, Ed will be sharing audio files of this song (see below) with tracks made specifically for each part. You'll see that the parts are divided Soprano, Alto, Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Bass 1 and Bass 2. If you already know what you usually sing, go for it! If not, 1 usually means higher and 2 means lower. For example, if you're a bass who can hit all those extra low notes, sing Bass 2. If you're a bass who is more of a Baritone, singing mostly low but with some upper range as well, sing Bass 1. If you're definitely a soprano but those super high notes feel rough, maybe try the Also part....etc. Just go with your gut and pick one for now and we can check in about this next week. Much of the song is not divided anyway, so it won't hurt if you change later on.
If you are interested in coming to hear my high school students perform, their POPS Concert is Saturday, June 15 at 6:00pm in the Lansing Middle School Auditorium. It is free and open to the public and is usually high quality and loads of fun! There is so much talent and positive energy at Lansing HS right now. The concert is pretty long - I'm guessing close to three hours - but it is fast paced and usually flies by. Plus, it's free, so you can always leave at intermission if you are getting antsy :) Although my daughter, Norah, has a big solo in the second act...
I'm looking forward to next week! Take care of yourselves and have a good week until then!
All the best,
Katie

The 10 Golden Rules For Choral Singers... |
Why do millions of singers rapturously join the choir rehearsal each week? It's quite simple: Singing together brings joy, releases feelings of happiness, keeps you healthy and promotes the social togetherness.
To maintain this positive feeling in everyday life, the publishing company "Lugert Verlag" has listed 10 golden rules for choral singers, which we want to share with you. Enjoy reading!
- The choir comes first, even if there is so much to do otherwise. Treat yourself to the choral rehearsal as a wellness oasis.
- Sit up straight on the edge of a chair, relax your shoulders, look ahead and smile!
- Be attentive to the rehearsal, listen to the other voices and postpone conversations with your neighbor.
- Be open to new ideas, although even if you initially resist. Trust the conductor; she/he knows what she/ he is doing.
- If something has been bothering you for a long time, talk with the conductor or the choral board after the rehearsal.
- Be well-organized: arrive the rehearsal on time with something to drink and a sharpened pencil, keep an eye on your choral appointments (in your calendar and as printed version in your music case). Arrange all your appointments with your social environment (family, work).
- Offer support and take on responsibility. Big aims are being achieved together.
- Learn something new every day! Listen to choral music, visit concerts of other choirs or join a singing workshop.
- Keep your voice healthy: drink enough, don't harrumph and whisper. During hoarseness: take a break from singing!
- Sing and practice as often as possible – during cutting veggies, driving a car, with your children and during walks in the forest.

Weekly Humor (AKA The Weekly Groan)... |
Why were the singers locked out of their rehearsal room?
They missed the key change.

Nonconsensual Olfactory Overload.. |

Please remember to avoid wearing perfumes, colognes, essential oils and other scents to rehearsals and performances as they create respiratory discomfort for some of our singers. Please do shower, however 😁 |
