Next Wednesday we are in for a treat, when Michael O'Sullivan FIPF FRPS flies in from Cork to present his talk: Kenya - Beyond the Big 5.
Michael says the following about his talk:
This is a project that was 20 years in the making. When I first went to Kenya 20 years ago, I visited Tsavo and Amboseli twice each. I also went with a flexible (ie. no) plan, and I just discovered things as I went. I fell in love with the place, the people, and the wildlife, and I have always planned to get back.
|
|
Getting back this time, informed by my previous trips, and by the massive amount of research I had done in the interim, I had some definite aims. Firstly, I had a more definite photographic plan. Shooting digital, as opposed to shooting transparency previously, meant I could be more ambitious with the scope. This time, I visited Samburu NR, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo East & West, and some area around them. This project is about capturing the overall experience, as opposed to just a collection of competition pictures. I wanted to document the wildlife as much as possible, including the big 5, but I also wanted to capture a sense of the places they inhabit. Of course there are wildlife portraits, but also as much as possible there are scenes, and sequences, to help tell stories. I'm as much moved by animals IN the landscape, as I am by the animals themselves. Since my last trip, I have been pretty much obsessed with elephants, and the different places they pass through as they cross vast areas of wilderness. I spent time waiting for them and watching them on some of their pathways along the way. I spent time trying to capture some of their little stories as they passed through. I also sought out and spent time watching and photographing some of the more elusive Super Tuskers, of which very few are left. Hopefully, these images that I will show in my talk, a mix of nature documentary and Artistic Interpretations, might pass on these stories to you.
Here are some images to give you a flavour of the treat in store! |

Owing to a technical glitch, the results from this year's Annual Projected Image Competition will be published in a separate issue either later this week or early next week.
|
Following the oft repeated comment by our judge for this year's Annual PDI Competition, about keylines, I know that there will be some members who will say that they don't want them, but I thought it might be worth repeating (for the benefit of the less experienced members) an article published in Issue 658:
|
The judge mentioned on quite a few occasions that the image on
the screen could do with a "keyline" to help separate the dark
background of the image from the equally dark surrounding area of the
projection screen. This would have allowed the judge to have seen where
the image stopped and the screen began, something that has also been
mentioned by a few previous judges to visit BPS. Those members who are a bit
long in the tooth should be well aware of this, but some newer members may be
less so.
Below are a couple of
examples of images, with and without keylines, shown against a black
background, typical of the way they would look against the black screen
surround. Hopefully you can see the huge difference just adding a 3-pixel
line around the outside of the image makes. If you aren't sure how to do
this, I'm sure some of the more experienced members will be only too pleased
to tell you.

The closing date for
the Annual Print
Competition is next Wednesday,
27 May. There is a box for your entries on the stage in Unit
13.
The competition will
be judged this year by Sue Sibley FIPF ARPS EFIAP/g DPAGB BPE5* from Southampton.
You may submit up to 4
prints and can use images already used in the bi-monthly competitions. But do
not use images which you have already submitted for this year’s Annual PDI
competition or which have gained awards in previous Annual Print
competitions.
If you want to put any
of your prints in for the open Nature section, tick the appropriate box on
the print label.
In addition to the
usual awards at each level, the judge will select the Best Travel, People,
Action, Landscape and Monochrome pictures from the whole entry (i.e. all
levels).
Please number your
entries in your preferred order, as some images may be culled if the total
entry is excessive.
IMPORTANT: Don’t forget to upload digital copies of your prints if
you have not done so already for previous competitions. These should be the
same size as for the PDI competitions – 1600 x 1200 – but there will be no
need to give any other information than your name and the actual title of
each image. Do, please, give the actual image titles, not just the
image codes. Here is the upload link: www.bristolphoto.org.uk/printsupload
We look forward to
seeing your prints!

President’s Cup and Garmston Bowl
The closing date for these panel competitions is 10 June. There will be more information about how to submit your entries soon.

However, all PDI entries and digital copies of print entries must still be uploaded to PhotoEntry by 24 June.

Well done to BPS members who did well in the recent Robin Hood BPE Exhibition. John Chamberlin gained 4 acceptances (including a certificate) and Sue O'Connell gained 2 acceptances - well done to both.
|
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).
|
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions,
it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know
so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that
you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell
us we can't possibly know!
