February 26th : Hiking Moukhtara- Haret Jandal

Dear ,

For this Sunday, February 26th 2012, we will be discovering a new trail in the Chouf biosphere reserve. A very beautiful hike from Moukhtara to Haret Jandal, on a former mule track with a scenic view through different landscapes: walking along the Barouk river, a walk under the imposing cliff of Amatour, crossing two wooden bridges, crossing both Ottoman and Mamluk bridges. A breathtaking hike by its beauty and its variety that combines a few sporty and vertiginous passages, a waterfall, and finally a forest track that leads us to the arrival.
The difficulty of this track lies in the fact that from a certain point, there is no possibility to come out through the cliffs and some technical passages where we should de-escalate few meter slithering.

Technical details:
Trail length: 10 km
Hike duration: 5h
Level: Medium to advanced
Difference in level: up hill: 750 m down hill: 436 m,
Late arrival

What to bring: walking shoes, back pack, water, light meal (sandwich, dried fruits,..), sunglasses, sun screen, lipstick, hat, wind breaker (K-way), fleece jacket.

Cost: 25$ (or 38 000 LBP) covering guides, transportation, insurance and reserve entrance. (Kindly bring the exact change).

Feasibility: A minimum of 15 persons is required.

The meeting place is at 8 am at the parking next to the Emergency Entrance of the Sacré Cœur hospital Hazmieh. To reach it, take the road of the Presidential palace in front of the Hypermarché Abou Khalil Hazmieh, then the first turn left towards the hospital. Please, be on time! !!(see map)

An UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

In July 2005, UNESCO declared the Shouf Biosphere Reserve (SBR), a protected area of approximately 50,000 ha -or 5% of the Lebanese territory. SBR includes the Shouf Cedar Reserve, located in the Shouf mountain chain of central Lebanon, and the Ammiq wetland, east of the Shouf in the Beqaa Valley. Ammiq is one of the last remaining wetlands in the Middle East, and a Ramsar site.
The Shouf Mountains are famous for hosting the largest expanses of Lebanese Cedar (Cedrus libani) in the country. The Cedar of Lebanon is a highly symbolic, world-famous conifer tree, and one of the mostly cited plants in history, religion and mythology. The Shouf hosts approx. 620 hectares of cedar forest, which is largely confined to the steeper and less accessible areas, particularly towards the higher altitude of the tree’s range.

Nowadays the cedar forest, protected from grazing and other human interference, is showing clear signs of natural regeneration. While cedars are found at the higher altitude of the western slopes of the Shouf, the lower altitudes and eastern slopes are the domain of evergreen and broadleaf East Mediterranean oak forests, which are home to a rich plant and animal community.
The Shouf, together with the surrounding mountains, is one of the most important freshwater-generating hotspots in Lebanon and the Middle East. The precipitation in the Shouf watershed is the source of both surface stream flow and groundwater. The source of some of the most important rivers of the region, including the Al Awali the Damour Rivers, is found in the Shouf.
The mountain, with its rich vegetation, plays an important influence on the climate of the wider region, and this role is increasingly crucial for mitigation and resilience to climate change. The health of the ecosystem is also critical for preventing soil erosion and desertification in a very sensitive and highly desertification-prone area.

Finally, the Shouf has great aesthetic and recreational value for the large population living in Beirut, along the Lebanese coast, and in surrounding areas. The world-class attraction of the Lebanese Cedar and the majestic mountain landscapes make the Shouf Biosphere Reserve a potential hotspot for nature tourism at the global level.
