After three years of working on and off with the project, experimenting, trying, failing and succeding - Next to You at Korsvägen will now finally open 6 September 2017 in Göteborg!
Welcome to the premiere and the opening week, or come by any time 6 Sept -19 November. It is part of GIBCA Extended - Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art.

Together into the new world
A smartphone in your hand can open up new worlds and connections, and also create isolated bubbles and segmented societies. In Next to You at Korsvägen, Hedemyr explores this paradox through an interactive walk where your choice of direction is crucial for the course of events. The work remixes the city's visions of Göteborg as a destination with quotes from Vilhelm Moberg's novel series The Emigrants, and facts about Korsvägen. A private mixed-reality situation where the experience of the place and the passers-by is intensified.

You can download the app and do the walk on your own via your smartphone and headphones, or borrow equipment when the team is on location.

INTERVIEW WITH MARIKA HEDEMYR

A new public artwork, Next to You at Korsvägen, will open September 6th, at Korsvägen in Göteborg. But it's not a sculpture or any other permanent installation. In Marika Hedemyr's artwork, the visitor is involved in a cinematic experience via their private smartphone.
Marika Hedemyr's art explores emotional and political relationships between people and places. In her latest public works, she expands choreography and narrative through new technology. In Next to You at Korsvägen, which is part of the GIBCA Extended program, the visitor participates via their own private screen and headphones.
– The work is created for and experienced at Korsvägen in Göteborg. You can do the walk on your own via your smartphone and headphones, or borrow equipment when the team is in on location, says Marika Hedemyr.
Next to You at Korsvägen is a site-specific walk with movies, sounds, animation, interactive elements and augmented reality technology - the same technology that is used in Pokémon Go. The work remixes the city's visions of Gothenburg as a destination with quotes from Vilhelm Moberg's novel series The Emigrants and facts about the place Korsvägen.
– In Next to You at Korsvägen, I enhance all the layers from the past, present and future that Korsvägen contains. Korsvägen (the crossroad) thus becomes both a symbol and a concrete place for choice of direction. Those who have done the earlier test-versions of the walk experienced it as if they were in the middle of a movie, even though they walked around with open eyes and ears. The audience, the user, is the protagonist, says Marika Hedemyr.
In addition to the idea, concept, script, and direction, Hedemyr develops technology and content together with a team of interaction designer / developer Jacob Michelsen from RISE Interactive, filmmaker Maja Kekonius, sound artist Helena Persson and 3D animator Lena Trapp.
Next to You at Korsvägen is part of GIBCA Extended and it is open from September 6 to November 19, 2017.
Hedemyr is also featured in the recently published book Art and the City, in which she has contributed a chapter, writing about public art and her project "The Event Series". (Routledge 2017). Furthermore, since May 2017 Hedemyr is enrolled for a PhD in Interaction Design at the School of Arts and Culture (K3) at Malmö University, Sweden.

Ett nytt offentligt konstverk, Next to You at Korsvägen, invigs den 6 september, på Korsvägen i Göteborg. Men det är inte en skulptur eller någon annan permanent utsmyckning. I Marika Hedemyrs konstverk görs besökaren delaktig i ett filmiskt händelseförlopp via sin privata smartphone.
Marika Hedemyrs konst undersöker känslomässiga och politiska relationer mellan människor och platser. I sina senaste offentliga verk expanderar hon koreografi och berättande via ny teknik. I Next to You at Korsvägen, som ingår i konstbiennalen GIBCA Extendeds program, blir besökaren delaktig via sin egen privata skärm och hörlurar.
– Verket är skapat för och upplevs på Korsvägen i Göteborg. Du kan gå promenaden på egen hand via din smartphone och hörlurar, eller låna utrustning när teamet finns på plats, säger Marika Hedemyr.

Publiken, användaren, är huvudpersonen, säger Marika Hedemyr.
Förutom idé, koncept, manus, och regi utvecklar Marika Hedemyr teknik och innehåll tillsammans med ett team bestående av interaktionsdesigner/utvecklare Jacob Michelsen från RISE Interactive, filmare Maja Kekonius, ljudkonstnär Helena Persson och 3D-animatör Lena Trapp.
