Leith Hill Action Group – Newsletter 4 (16th March 2012)

Stop the Leith Hill oil drilling!

Hello and welcome to our fourth newsletter.  This issue, we’re going to provide the exciting news about our forthcoming fundraising events!  This newsletter is quite a bit longer than usual, because we have so many events to talk about.  But I hope that also means you will find something that interests you.

But before we get to that: a great big thank you for your fantastic response to the request for donations.  As always, we are blown away by your generosity.  We are collectively showing that a community really can come together to fight a company who wants to exploit the countryside and residential areas just to make a profit.  We have so far raised a fantastic £6,800. We still have a long way to go, but we are making great progress, so please keep those donations coming.

And now, on with the long-awaited list of events.  To register an interest in any of the events, you can directly contact the person responsible (as detailed under each of the events below) or alternatively please contact Charlotte or Patrick on 01306 713759 or via the usual email addresses: pnoley@gmail.com or lhag@hotmail.co.uk.

"James Bond" Poker Night

Friday 30th March, from 7pm, JV Hall, Coldharbour

On Friday 30th March, from 7pm, the JV Hall in Coldharbour will be turned in to the Casino Royale for a James Bond themed poker night!

Tickets cost £25, which includes all of your poker chips for the evening, pizza (not very James Bond, but caviar was beyond our budget) and a cocktail (shaken not stirred). A donations bar will also be provided.  The ultimate winner will take home £250.

Dress to impress – black tie / evening dress preferred, but optional.

There are only two weeks left now to register for this event.  For the sake of our planning, please do let us know if you are coming!  And don’t be shy – we will be explaining all the rules on the night and you can expect a fun and forgiving environment.  There are still tickets left, so don’t miss out on a fun evening!

For tickets, please either contact Becky Hopper at bhopper@pixham.com or on 01306 711754. Alternatively, as always, you can contact LHAG@hotmail.co.uk or pnoley@gmail.com or call Patrick or Charlotte on 01306 713759.

We are also looking for a few experienced hands (or ones that can be readily taught!) to be croupiers on the night.  Please get in touch if you can help!

LHAG Dorking Halls Show: "For Goodness Sake!"

And now for our Blue Riband announcement:

Brian Blessed offers his support to LHAG!  The Grand Hall at Dorking Halls has been booked for Friday 15th June for a show called ‘For Goodness Sake!’  to raise funds to fight the Oil Appeal.  There is still some slight movement in the actual line up, but, amongst other great performers, we know the stars will be Virginia McKenna, Lindy Alexander (who is also devising the show) and Brian Blessed

Anyone who was lucky enough to get a seat at ‘The Best of Times, the Worst of Times’ in September 2010 at Christ Church, also devised by Lindy, will know what a superb evening’s entertainment the show will provide.  Lots of music, the occasional tear jerker, and, with Brian Blessed, some uproarious moments.

 As Brian Blessed said:

When Virginia told me about the possibility of an oil drilling platform being erected in the woods on Leith Hill (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and that a campaign had been formed to challenge this, I was only too pleased to lend my support.  The ancient lane from Dorking up to Coldharbour is fragile and irreplaceable and must be saved.  This is a part of England that money should not buy.

I am really pleased to have been asked to be a part of the show at the Dorking Halls on June 15th.  I revel in challenges and this is one we will win.'

Tickets are (or soon will be) available from Dorking Halls Box Office – 01306 881717 - priced £20 and £25 each.  This magnificent event will start at 7:30pm and will be something to talk about for years to come! Please come along and help make this event truly memorable!

LHAG 10km Run (or Walk!)

For the more active of us, we have the LHAG 10k Run.  This is taking place on Sunday 1st July at 10am on the trails around Leith Hill – scenic, challenging and a reminder of exactly what it is we are fighting for!  Tickets are £12 in advance or £15 on the day.  And don’t worry – there will be a drinks station en route!  Entries are open to walkers too who would like to join in what will be a fun challenge in beautiful countryside.  Email charlotte.nolan@firstactuarial.co.uk to find out more or to book your pre-race entry.

Moonriders London to Brighton Cycle Ride

For the even more active, we are also putting together a cycle team for the London to Brighton Moonriders night cycle ride.   This is a professionally run event that provides a full service for cyclists, including a coach ride home for the rider plus their bike and a meal stop en route.  It takes place on the night of Friday 29th June

We have managed to agree a special deal with the event organisers, meaning that they have substantially reduced their normal fees for us.  If you would like to be part of the LHAG cycle team, all you need to do is raise £300 in sponsorship money.   There are no further costs for you to pay.  Riders normally taking part in this event would have to pay a fee of £59 in addition to raising at least £300 in sponsorship, so this is a great opportunity to help us and also access the event for less than it usually costs.

Email charlotte.nolan@firstactuarial.co.uk to find out more or to join the team.

Gig at The Star

Local bands The Darlings and The Salts will be playing at the Star pub in West Street in Dorking on 7th April at 8pm and kindly donating their fee for the night to LHAG.  They’ll also be donating any album sales from the night too, as well as passing a collection around.  No need to book, just turn up on the night and enjoy a great evening of music.

Argentinian Asado

On 13th May, at 1pm we are having an Argentinian Asado at Crockers Farm, Coldharbour.  This is a lamb BBQ “done the Argentinean way” and will be a fun-filled, family affair. So please bring your friends and family and join us for a fun afternoon.  In order that we can plan the food & drink quantities, please email mail@crockersfarm.co.uk if you would like to come along or phone Thom or Jane on 01306 712123.

Auction of Promises

26th May sees the Auction of Promises at Coldharbour Village Fete, the proceeds from which have very kindly been promised to LHAG.  If you can donate a promise, please contact Penny Darbyshire directly at p.darbyshire@kingston.ac.uk or on 01306 712009.  If you are interested in bidding then be there at the village fete! It starts at 2pm, with the auction happening mid-afternoon.

Open Garden, Tea and Cake

There is an Open Garden afternoon at Leylands Farm, Leylands Lane, Abinger Common on 8th July from 2pm.  Tea and cake will also be available to buy.  This is in beautiful surroundings and will be a lovely way to spend a few hours.  No need to book in advance – just turn up on the day and enjoy.

Professional Massages

Throughout April and May, Jane Dalgleish has very kindly promised that all proceeds raised from her new massage business will be donated to LHAG.  That sounds like a great way to have all your troubles melted away and feel good about doing it too!

If you would like to enjoy one of Jane’s expert massages then please email Jane on janedalgleish1@gmail.com or 07902 856870. Prices start at £25 and a leaflet is available on our website.

Auction of Donated Items

We are also going to have an ebay auction of donated items.  We need your (high-quality!) unwanted items for resale, so please be forthcoming!

If you have something good to give, it would be enormously helpful if you could take a few photos of it, wrap it up ready for delivery and take it down to the post office to obtain postage costs.  This will save us having to do this ourselves for (hopefully!) hundreds of items.  Please then email the photos, a brief description, postage costs and your address to Lindsay Wilson at dasy63@hotmail.com . Lindsay will then add the item to ebay and contact you when it has sold so you know when and where to post it.  Our thanks go to Lindsay for organising this.

Thanks for reading about all these events.  I hope and believe there is something there for everybody to enjoy and we look forward to seeing you.  Thanks for your continued support.
