Thank You for your Moves New York City!

They came from as far away as Japan. Nearly 10,000 dancers danced, the rain did not come and tens of thousands came out to see the 9th Annual Dance Parade and Festival. Our sincere thanks to all who participated, watched or helped make it happen!

Thank you City Council Member Rosie Mendez for arranging our Press Conference Monday on the Steps of City Hall and for Deputy Commissioner Eddie Torres to present us with Mayor de Blasio's Proclamation:
"No matter how old we are or where we're from, we've all experienced the irrestible urge to dance. New Yorkers have always showwed off their moves, and the incredible diversity of cultures and customs represented throughout the five boroughs means that those moves could be in any number of different dance styles. In studios, dance clubs, and festivals across our city, it's not hard to find our talented dancres practicing everything from traditional african dance to the current zumba craze, and today, we will once again celebrate the wide world of dance that unites us all with Dance Parade New York.
Now in its ninth year, this annual event brings together thousands of dancers showcasing 75 unique styles and culminates in a massive dance party at DanceFest in Tompkins Square Park. Parade-goers will have the opportuity to participate in the action by attending dance lessons and watching free live performances. The parade is also an excellent way to educate the community about the evolution of dance, the vital role it has played in cultures around the globe, and the importance of supporting organizations and individuals who work so hard to preserve and promote this vital art form.
As we work to ensure that all New Yorkers can be part of the rich cultural life of our city, we are delighted to join in commending Dance Parade for its commitment to inclusion and efforts to celebrate the diversity of our residents. This year, the parade will commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Mary Verdi-Fletcher, founder of Dancing Wheels, the first physically integrated dance troupe in the country, will lead the parade, along with fellow grand marshals Carmen de Lavallade, Robert Battle, and DJ Rekha. I applaud all those participating in this outstanding New York City tradition and encourage our residents to grab their family and friends and dance the day away!
Now therefore, I, Bill de Blasio, Mayor of the City of New York, do hereby proclaim May 16th, 2015 in the City of New York as:
'New York Dance Parade Day'"

2015 Grand Marshals, Living Legends
|
Four Grand Marshals joined 10,000 dancers down Broadway and were later
presented awards by City Council Rosie Mendez at DanceFest in Tompkins
Square Park. The Award Ceremony kicked off DanceFest, the Grand Finale of Dance Parade on 5 stages.

The four Grand Marshals span the diversity of dance – they were the
renowned ballet choreographer and dancer Carmen de
Lavallade, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Choreographer and Artistic Director Robert
Battle, Dancing Wheels founder Mary Verdi-Fletcher, and pioneer of
bhangra music in North America, DJ Rekha.
While the parade celebrated more than 75 styles of dance, this
year, we honored especially the genres of contemporary ballet, Physically
Integrated Dance, and dance in the bhangra community. Dance Parade’s
Curatorial Committee chair DJ McDonald explained that the honorees were
selected due to their “perseverance, impact, contribution, and
uniqueness” that they have represented and supplied throughout their
formidable careers.
This year’s Dance Parade New York will celebrated the 25th anniversary of the monumental civil rights legislation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Ms. Verdi-Fletcher, whose physically integrated troupe was the
first
professional company of its kind in the US to bring the talents
of
dancers with and without disabilities to the stage, led the
parade
while dancing in her wheelchair.
