A 90s festival on The Farm!
Dear Friends,

During the '90s, The Farm had two festivals, Unity Fest in the spring and the Harvest Festival in the fall. I was part of the crew pulling off both, but more involved in the Harvest Festival.

Small by most Festival standards, we maxed out at about a thousand people during the last few years. The vibes were good, the music fantastic, but they were never financially successful. The events also drew in too many random people that just wanted to party, and attracted cops that hassled people coming in and out. This type of festival and the crowd we attracted were not the right fit.

What seemed to work better were events where people had a clear intention, such as a national conference of alternative schools and a BioRegional Congress.

I decided to change my focus to small groups of 20 to 40 that were truly interested in learning about the community and created The Farm Experience Weekend. From 2001 to 2017 I would host two to six of these a year, plus an annual conference on Community and Sustainability. In 2018 I added Dances of Universal Peace weekends.

The Sanctuary Summit, takes the best of Unity (great music!), and the workshops of Farm Experience, and meets in the middle. Instead of the 1000 party people of Unity or 20-40 at a Farm Experience, we’ll have up to 200 people seeking a conscious experience in community and sustainability, coupled with what we have always done best, dancing under the stars! There are still tickets available!

We have learned a lot about hosting these types of events over the last 50 years. I am looking forward to it!
I am especially excited about my upcoming Dance Weekend, April 13-16, Polishing the Heart ! It looks like we're going to have a great band, with a solid drummer on jimbe, a talented violinist, and a top-notch, professional flutist and saxophone player. I'll be holding down the rhythm on guitar.
I can't wait!
Peace,
Douglas

Community Birthwork midwifery panel - with Abdulah Umm Saalamah Abdullah-Zaimah

Abdulah Umm Saalamah Abdullah-Zaimah
Umm Salaamah’s career in midwifery began with her daughter and goddaughter, both teenage mothers-to-be with a high distrust of the health care system. “I had been through the emergency childbirth training that they gave police officers. Both of those babies were born at home, during a snowstorm that shut everything down."
When her daughter became pregnant again, Umm Salaamah reached out to The Farm Community. “I fell in love with how they did things at The Farm. I quit my job, bought a van and was on my way.”
Umm Salaamah spent two years training on The Farm, and then went on to become a certified nurse midwife, working with communities across the country and the world.

Speaking Engagements
At the same time, I recognize that I can reach a lot more people if I go outside the community. One of my goals is to speak at colleges and universities where I can talk to young people about Right Livelihood, Service, and Finding Sanity in an Insane World. This is a time when people need to hear an uplifting message of hope.

If you are part of an organization, event, or school (or you just want to learn more about my life's work), I invite you to visit my website www.douglasstevenson.com, where you'll find information on my lecture topics and how to bring me to speak in your area.
Thank you for your interest, and your support. I hope to see you down the road.
