Chair's Introduction

Dear Members,

It is now a couple of months since you elected a largely new Committee at the AGM. You may well be thinking it’s been rather quiet (which is true) but there has been a lot of positive work going on in the background.

The new Committee has met on three occasions in the past 2 months. Our focus has been some immediate actions necessary to stabilise and maintain core delivery of advanced training (see updates from Stephen and Roger) but we are close to concluding on a much wider 2-year plan for what we will do in 2026 and 2027.

The first deliverables of this plan will be central to our main function – improving road safety by delivering more training and education. This means a lot of work to grow our Tutor cadre and then recruiting more Associates for whom we’d like to use some funds to make training as affordable and accessible as possible.

Equally, we want to use some funds to deliver more for you. We want to become a more vibrant, active group which gives you plenty of opportunity to socialise with other members and develop your skills. We are looking towards a range of activity including perennial favourites like group rides (already underway) and tech talks but also creating a monthly in person meeting at a suitable café or venue where we can meet regularly. We are committed to an ‘all Member’ newsletter or similar at least every quarter to keep you informed.

I hope these ideas meet with your approval and please do contact me, or anyone on the Committee if you have any more ideas. If you might be able to offer an interesting talk or session for members that would be even better! We look forward to sharing the full plan with you very soon.

The festive season is of course upon again. It is appropriate for me to thank everyone who has contributed to the work of the Gloucestershire RoADAR group, in whatever capacity, over the past year. We are a group of volunteers and, especially at Christmas, our work to make roads safer is even more high-profile and important to ensure everyone gets to where they are going without incident.

Lastly, I’d also like to wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year. I hope to see you in 2026.

Best Wishes,

Mike Ibbitson

Car Coordinator Update

Motorcycle Coordinator Update
The Motorcycle Section has:

75  Members
8    Group Tutors
9    Advanced Tutors
17  Associates in training

We currently have six new associates waiting for Tutors. However, there are also three members of the public waiting for the Motorcycle section to reopen so they can join Glos RoADAR. This is unlikely to happen much before February 2026.

Due to a combination of life events, illnesses, injuries and relocation only 10 Tutors are active at present. With high training demand and reduced Tutor availability, the Motorcycle Section remains closed to new associates.

Turn Up & Train in Gloucester for waiting Associates

To provide training to waiting associates we cancelled the SkillShare recruiting events, set up and ran the new ‘Turn Up & Train’ events where associates have an available Tutor for a Saturday morning.

This
has had enthusiastic support from Tutors, has been very well attended by associates and is very successful. Five events have been run so far with one more in early December. Thank you to all involved.

A Group Tutor training programme has been devised and ten riders have signed up. It begins in January and should be complete by early May 2026 (we have to wait for the spring when things warm up a bit to ensure practical riding assessments are safe).

Group Motorcycle rides have restarted and were kicked off in October by Group Ride Coordinator Larry Humphries with a jaunt heading for Elan Valley (sadly washed out due to biblical rain).

Our second outing was led by Stephen Wilkinson-Carr on one of the rare, sunny and dry winter days (he claims he has a 'good weather genie' on his side). Seven riders had a great day's riding.
The next group ride will be on Sunday 14 December, for all riders, and will be led by Nigel Hitchings. All motorcycle members have already been sent full details. We'll be heading for Goodies Cafe in Lambourn where the homemade cakes are apparently well worth sampling.
We're always looking for new group ride leaders. Tempted?
