“When we die, we remain in the stories and legends, in dreams…and in art”
“In Resonancias, many emotions and images come together that first appeared after the death of my father and my arrival in the US. Many of those images were not of actual moments that I lived, but rather memories, stories and legends passed down in my family. With those “given” memories, my music has also been transformed, fed by my own artistic curiosity and a search for those sparks that for me are a reflection of my ancestors and the very essence of being human.”- JLRodriguez
In this new work, Flamenco is not just a traditional art, but rather a rich language that is filled with nuances and is used to create music without surnames. Rodriguez brings his compositional style and the use of electronic manipulations to create a space where tradition and experimentation delve into the innermost crevices of memory.
Resonancias is an interdisciplinary and multicultural work. It is a collaboration that includes images and staging Alexey Taran (Cuba) and Carla Forte (Venezuela), choreography by Niurca Marquez (USA), the accompaniment of Alex Jordan on second guitar (Cuba) and live electronic soundscapes created by Gustavo Matamoros (Venezuela).
The intention is to create a complete experience where the audience can enter a space of ancestral essence in which emotions and legends co-exist.
About Jose Luis Rodriguez
José Luis Rodríguez is among the most important guitarists of his generation. Considered the continuation of the school of Mario Escudero, his music is characterized by his capacity of interpretation and composition, which supports itself with impeccable technique. The strength of his right hand in particular is noteworthy making it sound like there is more than one guitar when he plays. Rodriguez is best known for a style that is intimate and expands beyond the limits of flamenco.
Having studied in his native Spain under Mario Escudero, Jose Luis Rodriguez recorded his first album “Andalusí” (1986) for the Organization of American States (OAS) and toured the US in a show by the same name. After being named a finalist for the Giraldillo in 1990, he composed music for Cristina Hoyos’ prestigious Flamenco dance company Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía for nine years, after which he returned to his solo career as a concert guitarist and created his work “De mis Manos.”
In 2007, after composing the music for Belén Maya’s “Dibujos” and “Souvenir,” he composed a new work entitled “Alfonsina, la mujer del mar,” with the Cuban singer Gema Corredera, described by critics and the US press as “flamenco-filin.”
In 2011 he relocated to the US, where he debuted “Intimate Spaces,” a new work that pushed the boundaries of flamenco as we know it. This “Nu” flamenco is characterized by a technical rigor that is not subjected to form, but rather driven by the conceptual framework of the topics and themes that transform the space and offer audiences an experience that goes beyond a musical concert.
In 2012 he presented ”Of Essence & Time” in collaboration with Susana Behar (voice) and Niurca Marquez (dance and choreography), in which he integrated elements of traditional Sephardic music, Andalusian popular songs and flamenco. He has since created “Entre Mundos” and “Flamenco Intimo” for choreographer Siudy Garrido and producer Pablo Croce, and“45th Anniversary” and “Con nombres y apellidos” for Flamenco Theatre Carola Zertuche. Rodriguez has also toured with world renowned recording artist Concha Buika.
Among the most notable of his numerous recording collaborations and solo works are “10X1” (Grammy Flamenco 2011 finalist) and “flamenco abstractions” alongside electronic musician David Font.
Nu Flamenco Collaborative, Inc. is a new organization bursting onto the Miami cultural scene. The collaborative is an initiative of individual artists Jose Luis Rodriguez and Niurca Marquez geared at bringing new voices in traditional, contemporary, and experimental flamenco to Miami audiences. Understanding that flamenco has evolved beyond the stereotypes surrounding it, it is the goal of the organization to expose US audiences to emerging voices in flamenco. With each work, it has been their goal to push the boundaries of traditional Flamenco further away from convention to bring a new design and execution to the concerts. They have developed an aesthetic defined by reinterpreting traditional Flamenco elements, making the work more accessible and relevant to a contemporary audience.
FUNDarte is a multidisciplinary non-profit organization dedicated to producing, presenting, and promoting music, theater, dance, film and visual arts that speak to Miami’s diverse cultures, with a special emphasis on artists from Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain.

- En Resonancias se unen muchas emociones e imágenes que comenzaron a aparecer en mi mente tras la muerte de mi padre y coincidiendo con mi llegada a USA. Muchas de esas imágenes nunca las viví, sino que eran recuerdos, historias y leyendas traspasados en la familia. Con esas memorias dadas, mi música también se ha ido transformando, alimentada por mi propia curiosidad artística, en busca de esas pequeñas chispas que, para mi, son reflejo de la esencia de los ancestros y también de la esencia misma del ser humano”. - JLRodriguez
En este concierto el flamenco no es tratado únicamente como un arte tradicional, sino como un lenguaje lleno de matices y riqueza, para crear música, sin apellidos, y donde Rodriguez añade a su trabajo guitarrístico, el uso de manipulaciones electrónicas, haciendo que lo tradicional y lo experimental se abracen para llegar a los rincones mas profundos de la memoria.
Resonancias tiene carácter interdisciplinario y multicultural. Prueba de ello, son las colaboraciones de Alexey Taran (Cuba) y Carla Forte (Venezuela) para crear la escenografía, los ambientes y las imágenes que acompañaran este concierto, así como la coreografía de Niurca Márquez (Cuba-US) o el acompañamiento musical de Alex Jordan (Cuba), pero cabe destacar la colaboración especial del Maestro Gustavo Matamoros (electronics), para las manipulaciones electrónicas en vivo.
La intención es crear una experiencia total, en la que el espectador pueda entrar en un espacio de esencia casi ancestral, donde habitan las emociones y las leyendas.
Jose Luis Rodriguez - Continuador del estilo de su maestro Mario Escudero, su música, renovada y fresca, se caracteriza por su capacidad interpretativa y compositiva, en las que se unen elementos sonoros universales, apoyado en un profundo conocimiento del flamenco y una técnica guitarrística impecable.
Tras haber obtenido diversos premios y distinciones, acompaña a numerosas figuras del flamenco, como La Susi, Carmen Linares, José Mercé o El Pele, entre otros. entre 1994 y 2004 formó parte del Ballet de la prestigiosa bailaora y coreógrafa Cristina Hoyos para quien compuso varios espectáculos.
En 2007 compone "La mujer en el Mar," para la voz de la cantante cubana Gema Corredera, un concierto inspirado en poemas de Alfonsina Storni, calificado en los círculos musicales como “flamenco filin”.
En 2011 se traslada a Miami (USA), desde donde proyecta su carrera como solista y compositor. En Septiembre del mismo año es presentado en el Centro Cultural Español como concertista ante la Reina de España Doña Sofía.
Desde entonces ha presentado como solista varios espectáculos y conciertos, destacando “Espacios Intimos,” “De la Esencia y el Tiempo,” “Nu Flamenco” y “Solo Concert,” además de hacer música a diferentes espectáculos de danza como “Entre Mundos,” “Flamenco Intimo” (Siudy Garrido-Pablo Croce), “45 Anniversary” y “Con nombre y Apellidos” de Carola Zertuche y “Cesar y Cleopatra” de Ilisa Rosal.
En 2012, crea la compañía Nu Flamenco Collaborative junto a la bailarina y coreógrafa Niurca Márquez y entre 2013-2014 realiza algunas colaboraciones en la gira mundial de la artista española Concha Buika.
En su trabajo discográfico destacan su disco finalista entre los Grammy Flamenco 2011 “10X1” y “flamenco abstractions” junto al músico electrónico David Font.
Nu Flamenco Collaborative, Inc. es una emergente organización creada en la escena cultural de Miami, como iniciativa de los artistas Niurca Márquez y Jose Luis Rodriguez. El objetivo principal de Nu Flamenco Collaborative es traer a Miami nuevas voces del Flamenco tradicional, contemporáneo y experimental, siempre desde el máximo respeto a la tradición y desde un profundo conocimiento de la misma. Esta organización entiende que, desde hace varios años, este arte se mueve mas allá de los estereotipos y se encuentra en una constante necesidad de renovación y experimentación, que necesita ser mostrada al público americano. En cada trabajo presentado, el compromiso se centra en empujar los limites del flamenco, mas allá de lo convencional, trayendo a la escena nuevas estéticas y sonidos. Este compromiso con el ir mas allá de “lo convencional”, lleva a los artistas a redefinir y reinterpretar los elementos del Flamenco tradicional, acercándolo así a públicos antes insospechados.
