Simon Caplan

Simon Caplan has had one of his abstracts selected as a finalist in the Intimate Landscapes category of this year’s Close-Up Photographer of the Year competition – the premier international contest for macro and close up photography. The shot, entitled Rust Never Sleeps, was taken in Bristol Harbour’s Underfall Yard and is a detail from a rusting sheet of steel stacked in an outside storage rack near to the workshops there. Taken handheld on Simon’s Sony A6500 camera with a 50mm Zeiss Touit Macro lens, the image finished in the top ten of this category of the contest - chosen from hundreds of entries worldwide by an international panel of judges. The shot has previously appeared in the club’s own competitions, being awarded a Highly Commended by Sandie Cox when she judged Round 2 of the PDI contest in the 2024/-5 season. Another of Simon’s images made the shortlist in the same category of the Close-Up Photographer of the Year contest this time round but didn’t quite make the top ten. The image, entitled ‘Cracked’, is a detail from the perished coating of a shipping container in Exeter Quay.

It is the second year running that one of Simon’s images has made the top ten of this category in the contest – with his shot ‘The Blood in My Veins’, a detail from the cracked coating of a shipping container on Bristol Harbourside, being a finalist in 2025.

More information about the contest can be found at www.cuptoy.com
