Ten zeerste aanbevolen: Bijeenkomst ERC-subsidies bij CWI op 27 november
|
Maandagmiddag [van 1200-1730], 27 november, is er een bijeenkomst waar gedetailleerde informatie wordt gegeven over ERC-subsidies. De bijeenkomst wordt gehouden in het CWI, in de Turingzaal van het Congrescentrum. De bijeenkomst wordt gezamenlijk georganiseerd door PWN, de commissie Onderzoek van PWN en de Tafel Wiskunde van NWO Science, omdat zij vinden dat het aantal ERC-voorstellen voor wiskundigen in Nederland omhoog kan. We zullen diepgaand discussiëren over hoe dit kan worden bereikt.
De bijeenkomst begint met een presentatie van Joan Vazquez Molina van het ERC-bureau in Brussel, sectie wiskunde. Hij zal een overzicht geven van de subsidieregelingen en het evaluatieproces, dat moet helpen begrijpen hoe je een concurrerend voorstel schrijft. Hij zal ook statistieken delen die relevant zijn voor Nederlandse wiskundigen en ruim de tijd nemen voor vragen en antwoorden.
Vervolgens zullen vijf excellente wetenschappers [op begin-, midden- en gevorderd carrièreniveau] hun ervaringen delen over wat er nodig is om een succesvol ERC-voorstel te schrijven. Bevestigde sprekers zijn Arjen Doelman, Martijn Kool, Stéphanie van der Pas, Lenny Taelman en Ronald de Wolf.
De informatiesessie wordt afgesloten met een discussie, waarbij vragen gesteld kunnen worden aan alle sprekers, of ervaringen gedeeld kunnen worden. Er zal ook voldoende tijd en gelegenheid zijn om bij te praten tijdens een lunch, thee en/of borrel en verder te praten.

Oproep semester programmaontwikkeling CWI 2024/2025
|
Het Centrum voor Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) nodigt collega's van Nederlandse universiteiten uit om gezamenlijk voorstellen te ontwikkelen voor CWI Research Semester Programma’s in 2024 en 2025. De CWI Research Semester Programma’s zijn een unieke kans om tijd en ruimte te creëren om met collega's samen te werken aan een onderwerp dat relevant is voor de Nederlandse wiskunde en informatica gemeenschappen.
De call voor voorstellen is verlengd en staat open tot 15 november 2023. Om gemeenschapsvorming en gezamenlijke ideeontwikkeling te faciliteren organiseert CWI een Open Space workshop (optioneel) op 7 november 2023.
CWI Research Semester Programma's bestaan uit een samenhangende reeks activiteiten over een langere periode om onderzoekers in staat te stellen hun netwerk uit te breiden voor verdere samenwerkingsinitiatieven. CWI zorgt voor de organiserende staf, PR en een budget voor vergaderfaciliteiten, reis- en verblijfskosten. Voorstellen moeten worden ontwikkeld in samenwerking met een CWI-onderzoeker binnen een van de vier CWI onderzoeksfocusgebieden:
- Algoritmen
- Cryptografie en veiligheid
- Data en intelligente systemen
- Kwantumrekenen

In memoriam Ton Langendorff
|
Op 18 oktober 2023 is Ton Langendorff overleden. Ton heeft sociologie gestudeerd aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij is in de wiskundige gemeenschap bekend geworden door zijn werk voor het 3TU Applied Mathematics Institute. Dit instituut, ook wel 3TU.AMI genoemd, is begonnen als gezamenlijk initiatief van de drie wiskunde-afdelingen van 3TU's (TU Delft, TU Eindhoven en Universiteit Twente). Vanaf het begin was Ton de secretaris van dit instituut. De eerste belangrijke activiteit was een gezamenlijk evenement in de Nederlandse Ambassade in Berlijn om een samenwerking te starten met Matheon en verschillende industrieën op het gebied van optimalisatie van energienetwerken. Matheon (nu MATH+) is een samenwerking van de drie universiteiten en twee onderzoeksinstituten in Berlijn. Matheon gaf veel inspiratie hoe 3TU.AMI te organiseren. Ton zat vol energie om 3TU.AMI tot een succes te maken. Hij organiseerde veel bijeenkomsten met Nederlandse industrieën en onderzoeksinstituten. Al in het begin verbond hij ook Wageningen en de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen aan 3TU.AMI. Tegenwoordig staat 3TU.AMI bekend als 4TU.AMI. Dankzij zijn werk is 4TU.AMI een belangrijk instituut in Nederland en goed bekend bij de (industriële) wiskundige gemeenschap.
Ton was ook de eerste secretaris van de commissie Innovatie binnen PWN. Hij speelde een grote rol, was zeer actief, en een van zijn belangrijkste bijdragen was het boek ''Succesformules'' geschreven door Ionica Smeets en Bennie Mols, waarvoor Ton de drijvende kracht was. Zijn enthousiasme en werkhouding werden zeer gewaardeerd door het bestuur en de directeur van PWN.
Ton speelde ook een rol in het in 2013 opgerichte European Service Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation (EU-MATHS-IN). Hier was hij de Nederlandse vertegenwoordiger in het Europese project MSO4SC en reisde hij naar veel collega's in Europa.
Na zijn pensionering bleef Ton actief met wiskunde. In 2017 was hij kwartiermaker van een European Technology Platform (ETP) voor Mathematical Modelling, Simulation, and Optimisation (MSO), kortweg ETP4MSO. Hij sloot de samenwerking met wiskunde af met het schrijven van een boek: "Denken wiskundigen wel zo exact?".

Ars et Mathesisdag op 18 november
|
De jaarlijkse Ars et Mathesis-dag wordt dit jaar gehouden op 18 november en zal plaats vinden in Leiden, op de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden, in de Cleveringazaal in het Kamerlingh Onnesgebouw. Er wordt een symposium met een aantrekkelijk programma geboden, gecombineerd met de mogelijkheid om je te laten inspireren door het werk van de diverse exposanten. Math4NL Community Event op vrijdag 1 december 2023
|
Noteer alvast de datum voor het Math4NL Community Event op vrijdag 1 december 2023 bij het Mathematisch Instituut in Leiden. Het thema van dit jaar is "Decision-making under Uncertainty", en we zijn blij te kunnen aankondigen dat onze keynote speaker Kateřina Staňková. Er zal volop gelegenheid zijn om inspiratie op te doen, ideeën uit te wisselen en met elkaar in contact te komen. We organiseren ook de finale van de Best Thesis in Applied Mathematics Award 2023, waar de finalisten hun scriptie zullen presenteren. Sara van der Geer verkozen tot lid Europese Academie van Wetenschappen
|
Elk jaar kiest de Europese Academie van Wetenschappen nieuwe leden die zijn voorgedragen door leden van de academie. Onlangs werd Sara van der Geer gekozen in de Mathematics Division.
De bijbehorende tekst: '' Sara van de Geer is sinds 2005 hoogleraar aan de ETH Zü- rich. Voor 2005 bekleedde ze posities in Nederland, Frankrijk en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Haar belangrijkste onderzoeksgebieden zijn empirische procestheorie, statistische leertheorie en niet-, semi- en hoog-dimensionale statistiek. Ze was co-redacteur van Bernoulli en associate editor van verschillende andere wetenschappelijke tijdschriften, zoals Probability Theory and Related Fields, Journal of Machine Learning Research, Annals of Statistics en Journal of the European Mathematical Society. Ze is voormalig voorzitter van de Bernoulli Society en was lid van de onderzoeksraad van de Zwitserse National Science Foundation en van evaluatiepanels voor ERC Advanced Grants (voorzitter). Ze was gastspreker op het Internationale Congres van Wiskundigen in 2010. Ze is internationaal lid van de Amerikaanse National Academy of Sciences, lid van Academia Europaea, Correspondent van de Nederlandse Koninklijke Academie van Wetenschappen, Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau en lid van Leopoldina, Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher.''
Uit Nederland zijn er tot nu toe 12 leden, waaronder Nobelprijswinnaar Gerard 't Hooft en scheikundige Bert Meijer. Twee wiskundigen zijn lid, naast Sara van der Geer ook Wil Schilders. Onder de wiskundigen zijn ook Fields medaillewinnaars Alessio Figalli, Martin Hairer en Cédric Villani lid.
Tijdens de recente jaarlijkse bijeenkomst in Madrid werden prijzen uitgereikt. Athanassios Fokas van Cambridge University ontving de Wiskunde Blaise Pascal Medaille 2023 en hield een voordracht getiteld "Unification versus Reduction: from the Unified Transform to Asymptotics".

AIM PhD networking event op 9 november 2023

Volgende week, op 9 november, vindt het AIM PhD netwerkevenement plaats in Utrecht (NWO Utrecht). Er zal een key note presentatie zijn door Dr. Onno Zoeter die het Booking AI Research leidt. De key note lecture wordt gevolgd door mondelinge en posterpresentaties van promovendi die werken aan wiskundig onderzoek in AI om hun werk te presenteren. Je kunt je nog steeds inschrijven via het inschrijfformulier.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Meeting ERC Grants at CWI on November 27
|
Monday afternoon [from 1200-1730], November 27, there will be a meeting to provide detailed information about ERC grants. The meeting will be held at the CWI, in the Turingzaal of the Congress Centre. The meeting is organized jointly by PWN, the committee Research of PWN and the Tafel Wiskunde of NWO Science, as they feel that the number of ERC proposals granted to mathematicians in The Netherlands could be increased. We will have in-depth discussions on how this can be achieved.
The meeting will start with a presentation by Joan Vazquez Molina of the Brussels ERC Office, section mathematics. He will provide an overview of the grant schemes and the evaluation flow, which should help understand how to write a competitive proposal. He will also share statistics relevant to Dutch mathematicians and reserve plenty of time for Q&A.
Next, five excellent scientists [at the early, mid, and advanced career level] will share their experiences in what it takes to write a successful ERC proposal. Confirmed speakers are Arjen Doelman, Martijn Kool, Stéphanie van der Pas, Lenny Taelman and Ronald de Wolf.
The information session will end with a discussion, where questions can be asked to all speakers, or experiences can b shared. There will also be ample time and opportunity to catch up over lunch, tea and/or drinks and have further discussions.

Call semester programme development CWI 2024/2025
|
Centrum for Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) invites colleagues from Dutch universities to jointly develop proposals for CWI Research Semester Programmes in 2024 and 2025. The CWI Research Semester Programmes are an unique opportunity to create time and space to collaborate with colleagues on a topic of relevance to the Dutch mathematics and computer science communities.
The call for proposals has been extended and is open until November 15th, 2023. To facilitate community building and joint idea development CWI organises an Open Space workshop (optional) on the 7th of November 2023.
CWI Research Semester Programmes entail a coherent set of activities over a longer period of time to allow researchers to expand their network for further collaborative initiatives. CWI provides the organizing support staff, PR and a budget for meeting facilities, travel and accommodation. Proposals should be developed in collaboration with a CWI researcher within one of the four CWI research foci:
- Algorithms
- Cryptography and Security
- Data and Intelligent Systems
- Quantum Computing

In memoriam Ton Langendorff
|
Ton Langendorff passed away on 18 October 2023. Ton studied sociology at the University of Amsterdam. He became known in the mathematical community through his work for the 3TU Applied Mathematics Institute. This institute, also called 3TU.AMI, started as a joint initiative of the three mathematics departments of 3TUs (TU Delft, TU Eindhoven and University of Twente). From the beginning, Ton was the secretary of this institute. The first major activity was a joint event at the Dutch Embassy in Berlin to launch a collaboration with Matheon and several industries in the field of energy network optimisation. Matheon (now MATH+) is a collaboration of the three universities and two research institutes in Berlin. Matheon gave a lot of inspiration how to organise 3TU.AMI. Ton was full of energy to make 3TU.AMI a success. He organised many meetings with Dutch industries and research institutes. Early on, he also connected Wageningen and the University of Groningen to 3TU.AMI. Today, 3TU.AMI is known as 4TU.AMI. Thanks to his work, 4TU.AMI is an important institute in the Netherlands and well known to the (industrial) mathematical community.
Ton was also the first secretary of the Innovation Committee within PWN. He played a major role, was very active, and one of his most important contributions was the book ''Success Formulas'' written by Ionica Smeets and Bennie Mols, for which Ton was the driving force. His enthusiasm and work ethic were highly appreciated by the board and the director of PWN.
Ton also played a role in the European Service Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation (EU-MATHS-IN) established in 2013. Here he was the Dutch representative in the European project MSO4SC and travelled to many colleagues in Europe.
After retirement, Ton remained active with mathematics. In 2017, he was quartermaster of a European Technology Platform (ETP) for Mathematical Modelling, Simulation, and Optimisation (MSO), or ETP4MSO for short. He concluded the collaboration with mathematics by writing a book: "Do mathematicians really think so precisely?".

Ars et Mathesisdag on november 18

This year's annual Ars et Mathesis day will be held on 18 November and will take place in Leiden, at Leiden University, in the Cleveringazaal in the Kamerlingh Onnes building. A symposium with an attractive programme will be offered, combined with the opportunity to be inspired by the work of the various exhibitors. Math4NL Community Event on Friday, 1 December 2023

Save the date for the Math4NL Community Event on Friday, 1 December 2023 at the Mathematical Institute in Leiden. This year's theme is "Decision-making under Uncertainty", and we are happy to announce our keynote speaker is Kateřina Staňková. There will be ample opportunity to be inspired, share ideas, and get connected. We will also be hosting the final for the Best Thesis in Applied Mathematics Award 2023, where the finalists will present their thesis.

Sara van der Geer elected to European Academy of Sciences
|
Each year, the European Academy of Sciences elects new members that have been nominated by members of the academy. Recently, Sara van der Geer was elected in the Mathematics Division.
The corresponding text: ‘’ Sara van de Geer is full professor at the ETH Zu ̈rich since 2005. Before 2005 she held positions in The Netherlands, France and UK. Her main areas of research are empirical process theory, statistical learning theory, and non-, semi- and high-dimensional statistics. She was co-editor of Bernoulli and associate editor various other scientific journals, such as Probability Theory and Related Fields, Journal of Machine Learning Research, Annals of Statistics and Journal of the European Mathematical Society. She is Past President of the Bernoulli Society, and was member of the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation and of ERC Advanced Grants evaluation panels (chair). She was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2010. She is International Member of the US National Academy of Sciences, Member of Academia Europaea, Correspondent of the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences, Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau, and Member of Leopoldina, Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher.’’
From The Netherlands, there are 12 members so far, including Nobel prize winner Gerard ‘t Hooft and chemist Bert Meijer. Two mathematicians are members, besides Sara van der Geer also Wil Schilders. Amongst the mathematicians, also Fields medallists Alessio Figalli, Martin Hairer and Cédric Villani are members.
At the recent annual meeting in Madrid, prizes were awarded. Athanassios Fokas of Cambridge University received the Mathematics Blaise Pascal Medal 2023 and gave a talk entitled “Unification versus Reduction: from the Unified Transform to Asymptotics”.

AIM PhD networking event on november 9, 2023
|
Next week, on November 9th, the AIM PhD networking event will take place in Utrecht (NWO Utrecht). There will be a key note presentation by Dr. Onno Zoeter who leads the Booking AI Research. The key note lecture is followed by oral and poster presentations of PhD students, working on mathematical research in AI to present their work. You can still register via the registration form.
