Wiskundefestival Mathfest een groot succes
|
Op zondag 11 mei vond in Utrecht de eerste Nederlandse editie van het wiskundefestival Mathfest plaats. Na een succesvolle start in Brugge in september 2023, werd het festival dit jaar voor het eerst ook in Nederland gehouden. Fort aan de Klop in Overvecht vormde het sfeervolle decor voor een dag vol creatieve en speelse wiskunde. Bezoekers van alle leeftijden namen deel aan interactieve activiteiten, puzzels en workshops, waarbij wiskunde op een toegankelijke en feestelijke manier werd gevierd. Deze opkomst laat duidelijk zien dat wetenschap en wiskunde ook buiten de kennisinstellingen en midden in de stad thuishoren, ze zijn voor alle leeftijden, en kunnen mensen verbinden! Zoals een bezoeker mooi verwoordde
"Fantastisch om te zien hoe jong en oud zich vermaakt met wiskunde!"

Nazomercursus (voorheen vakantiecursus) voor wiskundeleraren 2025
|
Een nieuwe naam voor dezelfde cursus! In 2025 in Antwerpen op 19 en 20 september en in Amsterdam op 26 en 27 september, met als thema: Reële toepassingen van complexe getallen. Download alvast de brochure met daarin alle inhoudelijke en praktische infomatie op de website. Voor vragen kunt u mailen naar nazomercursus@platformwiskunde.nl.

De uitreiking van de Abelprijs vond plaats op 20 mei in Oslo, Noorwegen. Professor Wil Schilders, directeur van PWN en president van ICIAM, was ook uitgenodigd om de festiviteiten bij te wonen. Wat heel bijzonder was dit jaar is dat er voor het eerst een delegatie van vier leerlingen uit Nederland deel heeft genomen aan het evenement, met twee begeleiders! Ze zijn naar Oslo gegaan om de festiviteiten rondom de uitreiking van de Abelprijs 2025 bij te wonen. De leerlingen zijn Ingmar Guns (4e klas), Anuraag Nayak (5e klas), David Sierra (5e klas) en Zyan Jiang (5e klas), Wietske de Vos en Lammert Westerdijk zijn de twee begeleiders. Karen Aardal benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw
|
Karen Aardal, hoogleraar Optimalisatie aan de faculteit Elektrotechniek, Wiskunde en Informatica (EWI), is in Utrecht benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. Meer over het werk en de betekenis van professor Aardal is te lezen in het persbericht van de TU Delft.

Barry Koren ontvangt koninklijke onderscheiding bij afscheid TU/e
|
Op 3 april 2025 werd op de campus van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven een speciale afscheidsbijeenkomst georganiseerd ter ere van het afscheid van professor Barry Koren! Een gedenkwaardige gebeurtenis markeerde de gebeurtenis: hij ontving een Koninklijke Onderscheiding en is benoemd tot Officier in de Orde van Oranje Nassau als erkenning voor zijn uitzonderlijke wetenschappelijke en maatschappelijke verdiensten.

Bridges Conferentie in Eindhoven |
De 2025 Bridges conferentie vindt plaats van 14-18 juli op de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven in Eindhoven, Nederland. Als u overweegt om aanwezig te zijn, kunt u de lijst met plenaire sprekers en het voorlopige schema bekijken. Kom regelmatig terug voor updates over de conferentie. We hopen je daar te zien!

Zomerschool AI in de klas
|
In deze summerschool zul je in vijf dagen ondergedompeld worden in verschillende aspecten van AI tools, zoals de ethische kant, de werking en wat kan het betekenen voor de student en/of docent. Daarnaast ga je aan de slag met verschillende AI tools en leer je de toepassingen ervan. De summerschool is van 21 juli tot 25 juli op het Utrecht Science Park in Utrecht. De kosten zijn €100 voor de week, inclusief lunch. Ben je geïnteresseerd in wat je met AI in het wiskundeonderwijs kan? Meld je dan aan via Utrecht Summerschool.

Oproep tot inschrijving voor de CWI Best Thesis in Applied Math Award
|
De CWI Best Thesis in Applied Math Award is inmiddels een gevestigde prijs waaraan ieder jaar weer veel afstudeerders uit WO en HBO meedoen. Met de prijs wordt het hoge niveau van de toegepaste wiskunde in Nederland onder de aandacht gebracht.
Afstudeerders kunnen vanaf nu hun scriptie insturen voor de editie van 2025. Aan de prijs is een geldbedrag van 500 euro verbonden. Voorwaarde voor deelname is dat het afstudeerwerk is gedaan in nauwe samenwerking met een bedrijf, maatschappelijke organisatie of instituut dat niet primair een onderwijstaak heeft. De prijs wordt gesponsord door CWI, ChipSoft en Phalanxes. Volledige informatie over deelname is te vinden op Thesis Award - Math4NL.

Talking Maths in Public: 28-30 augustus in Warwick, VK |
Talking Maths in Public is een conferentie die om de twee jaar plaatsvindt in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De bijeenkomst is bedoeld voor iedereen die werkt aan of betrokken is bij het communiceren van wiskunde naar het brede publiek. Het evenement wordt onafhankelijk georganiseerd en gefinancierd via kaartverkoop en subsidies van wiskundige instellingen. Kijk op de website voor meer informatie, het programma en de registratie.

Roemeense president is een uitmuntend wiskundige
|
Nicușor Daniel Dan heeft op 26 mei 2025 de verkiezingen gewonnen en is de President van Roemenië geworden. In 1987 en 1988 won hij met perfecte scores gouden medailles op de Internationale Wiskunde Olympiade en toen hij klaar was met school ging hij aan de slag met de studie wiskunde op de Universiteit van Boekarest. Wiskunde sprak hem heel erg, na zijn studie ging hij verder met een master en in 1998 behaalde hij een doctoraat aan de Universiteit van Paris-Nord 13. De titel van zijn proefschrift: Courants de Green et prolongement méromorphe.

4TU.AMI Community Event op 27 juni in Wageningen |
De Community Day van 4TU.AMI heeft als doel om alle collega’s van de vijf toegepaste wiskunde instituten (TU Delft, TU/e, RUG, UTwente, WUR) bij elkaar te brengen om kennis te maken zowel met elkaar als met de organisatie. Mathematics festival Mathfest was a big success!
|
On Sunday, May 11, the first Dutch edition of the math festival Mathfest took place in Utrecht. After a successful launch in Bruges in September 2023, the festival was held in the Netherlands for the first time this year. Fort aan de Klop in Overvecht provided the atmospheric setting for a day filled with creative and playful mathematics. Visitors of all ages participated in interactive activities, puzzles, and workshops, where math was celebrated in an accessible and festive way. The turnout clearly shows that science and mathematics belong not only within academic institutions but also right in the heart of the city—they are for all ages and can bring people together! As one visitor beautifully put it:
"Fantastic to see how both young and old are enjoying themselves with mathematics!"

Ceremony of the Abel prize
|
The Abel Prize award ceremony took place on May 20 in Oslo, Norway. Professor Wil Schilders, director of PWN and president of ICIAM, was also invited to attend the festivities. What made this year particularly special is that, for the first time, a delegation of four students from the Netherlands participated in the event, accompanied by two chaperones! They traveled to Oslo to attend the celebrations surrounding the 2025 Abel Prize ceremony. The students were Ingmar Guns (10th grade), Anuraag Nayak (11th grade), David Sierra (11th grade), and Zyan Jiang (11th grade). The two chaperones were Wietske de Vos and Lammert Westerdijk.

Karen Aardal was made a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion
|
Karen Aardal, Professor of Optimisation at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) was made a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion in Utrecht. You can read more about Professor Aardal’s work and legacy in the press release of the TU Delft.

Barry Koren received royal honor at TU/e farewell
|
On April 3rd 2025 a special farewell event was organized on the campus of the Eindhoven University of Technology to celebrate the retirement of Professor Barry Koren! A memorable occasion marked the event, as he received a Royal Decoration and is appointed as Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau in recognition of his outstanding academic and societal contributions.

Bridges Conference in Eindhoven

The 2025 Bridges conference will take place 14–18 July at the Eindhoven University of Technology in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Call for submissions for the CWI Best Thesis in Applied Math Award
|
The CWI Best Thesis in Applied Math Award is an established annual award in which many graduates from WO and HBO participate. The award highlights the high level of applied mathematics in the Netherlands.
Graduate students can now submit their thesis for the 2025 edition. The winner receives 500 euros. The main condition for participating is that the graduation work was done in close collaboration with a company, societal organization or institute that is not itself an educational organization. The award is sponsored by CWI, ChipSoft en Phalanxes. All information on the award and details about submitting thesis can be found at Thesis Award - Math4NL. |
Taking Maths in public: 28-30 August in Warwick, UK

Talking Maths in Public is a conference which runs in the UK every two years, for people who work in, or otherwise participate in, communicating mathematics to the public. The event is independently organised, and funded by ticket sales and grants from mathematical institutions. Have a look at the website for more information, the program and registration.

Romanian President is an Outstanding Mathematician
|
Nicușor Daniel Dan won the elections on May 26, 2025, and has become the President of Romania. In 1987 and 1988, he earned gold medals with perfect scores at the International Mathematical Olympiad. After finishing school, he went on to study mathematics at the University of Bucharest. Deeply passionate about mathematics, he continued with a master’s degree and, in 1998, obtained a PhD from the University of Paris-Nord 13. The title of his dissertation was Courants de Green et prolongement méromorphe.

4TU.AMI Community Event on June 27 in Wageningen

The purpose of this event is to bring together members of the five applied mathematics institutes (TU Delft, TU/e, RUG, UTwente, WUR) in order to get to know knew colleagues and catch up with old ones, explore common research or teaching interests, invite collaboration, and receive updates on current 4TU.AMI funded projects.
