Wednesday 25 February

Next Wednesday, we welcome Mark Pain to BPS, when he will present his talk: The Art & Challenges Of Successful Sports Photography.

World class sports photography is Mark's specialty. He is a multi-award winning sports photographer with over twenty-five years' experience and international recognition. Covering major events worldwide from the Olympic Games to the Ryder Cup, and from football and rugby World Cups to World Championship athletics, Mark has worked at the top of his profession for many years and was Chief Sports Photographer of the Mail On Sunday for over twenty years.
He captures Premier League football action most weeks, as well as taking portraits and features of the biggest and best stars in the world of sport, working for both editorial and corporate clients. Having won many competitions and been highly commended on numerous occasions, including as a sports finalist in the World Press Photo 1998, Mark was named as the Sports Photographer of the Year in 2005 and 2011 at the British Press Awards. He was named as the British Airways Olympic Photographer Of The Year 2012 at the prestigious UK Guild Of Picture Editors Awards. In 2011 Mark successfully launched the first dedicated Sports Photography School in the UK, and in 2013 became a Nikon UK Ambassador. We will be treated to stunning sporting images from many genres.

Have a look at Mark's website www.markpain.com

In the meantime, here are a couple of images to keep you going until Wednesday:

Parking
WEX - We have been asked not to park directly in front of WEX's main entrance door as it appears that it can set their intruder alarm off, resulting in the manager being called out - this leaves him one very unhappy bunny and might push him to stop us parking on his forecourt altogether.

The aerial view on the left shows where it is OK to park on WEX's forecourt. The simple rule is that you can park in the spaces obviously marked as parking bays and also on the crosshatched area infront of their loading bay - but you should NOT park in the area bounded by the red line in the image.

I have noticed recently that Unit 5, topbinzfootballshirts, are often open in the evenings (the area to the left of the estate entrace). If they are open when you arrive (you'll see neon signs saying they are OPEN, which is a bit of a give away), please avoid parking in front of them.

As mentioned previously, we park on the estate through the generosity of our neighbours - SO PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF OUR NEIGHBOURS, THINK BEFORE YOU PARK.

Found Ring
The ring reported in last week's newsletter as having been found in the Ladies WC is still unclaimed. If it was you who lost it, drop Carol an email (membership@bristolphoto.org.uk), and you can make arrangements to be re-united with your lost gem.

Distinctions Advice Group

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY - DISTINCTIONS ADVICE GROUP

The next meeting will be held on Monday 9 March at the Clubrooms.

For those of you who are unaware of the distinctions available, there are basically two types:
Those where you have to produce a panel or set of pictures.
This is the case for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), The Photographic Alliance (PAGB) and the Welsh Federation (WPF). For the RPS and WPF the work has to form a panel. For the PAGB, the work does not have to be related, and the pictures are assessed separately.

For the RPS awards you have to be a member of the RPS. This costs £130 per year (£98 if you are over 65). The RPS has different categories of awards, and we can advise on these. This is why the PAGB awards are so popular as you only pay an entry fee.

Those where distinctions are awarded for the number of pictures accepted in approved National and international exhibitions.
These exhibitions are approved by the PAGB for national exhibitions, Federation de L’Art Photographic (FIAP) and The Photographic Society of America (PSA), for International Exhibitions These days FIAP mostly dominate the Internationals, and their awards are very popular.

BPS Advice meetings.
Andrew Marker, Ralph Snook and I offer advice on how to approach an entry for these distinctions. We do not expect you to have a fully worked out entry and like to see work in progress.

We are also able to offer more detailed advice on pictures than is provided by our Club competitions, as judges advice is limited by the large entry and limited time available.

So, if you want opinions on pictures, bring them along.

That Unique Kingfisher Shot!
After seeing so many wonderful nature images during last weekend's Bristol Salon judging, one is left wondering how such "unique" shots are obtained - wonder no more!
