Negen VIDI-beurzen werden toegekend aan wiskundigen
|
NWO heeft in totaal aan 102 ervaren onderzoekers een Vidi-subsidie toegekend ter waarde van 850.000 euro. Met de subsidie kunnen zij een eigen innovatieve onderzoekslijn ontwikkelen en een eigen onderzoeksgroep opzetten. De volgende 9 onderzoekers uit de wiskunde zijn uitgekozen:
a. Een sprong in kwantumdomeinen, Francesca Arici (UL)
b. Quantumvormen ontdekken, Pieter Belmans (UU)
c. Het meten van de vorm van data, door Magnus Botnan (VU)

NWA financieert project “Emergence at all scales" (EAAS) - Call voor NWA Outreach2025 is open
|
Een nationaal programma over “Emergence at all scales” (EAAS) is toegekend door de NWO in het kader van hun Onderzoek op Routes door Consortia (ORC) programma van de Nationale Wetenschapsagenda (NWA). Dit interdisciplinaire consortium onderzoekt de vele gevallen van emergentie in de natuurwetenschappen en wiskunde. Enkele fundamentele vraagstukken die door het consortium zullen worden behandeld zijn:
- de zoektocht om te begrijpen hoe ruimte, tijd, zwaartekracht en het universum lijken te ontstaan vanuit het niets;
- hoe materie op alle schalen zichzelf organiseert in verschillende fasen die talrijke eigenschappen vertonen, waaronder die welke lijken levende systemen;
- wiskundige inzichten in universele eigenschappen van emergentie over fysische systemen – variërend van spectrale theorie tot netwerkanalyse, informatietheorie en hydrodynamische limieten – die een gemeenschappelijke taal bieden voor emergente fenomenen.
Buiten de natuurwetenschapen en wiskunde, speelt emergentie een centrale rol in de sociale en economische wetenschapen. Hiernaast blijft emergentie een bron voor inspiratie voor verschillende sectoren van de samenleving, waaronder kunstenaars en het brede publiek. Het consortium zal op verschillende manieren in contact komen met de samenleving, door middel van citizen science, maatschappelijk gedreven onderzoek, wetenschapsgeïnspireerde kunst, wetenschapscommunicatie, en educatie.
Walter van Suijlekom (RU, voorzitter van de commissie Onderzoek van PWN), zit in het bestuur waarbinnen hij de wiskunde vertegenwoordigt.
NWO stelt anderhalf miljoen euro beschikbaar voor wetenschapscommunicatieprojecten die als doel hebben om de verbinding tussen wetenschap en samenleving sterker te maken. Professionals van kennisinstellingen, musea en andere publieke onderzoeksorganisaties kunnen een voorstel indienen in deze nieuwe ronde van de wetenschapscommunicatie-call van de Nationale Wetenschapsagenda (NWA). De deadline voor het indienen van aanvragen is dinsdag 25 februari 2025, voor 14:00:00 CET.

NvvW viert 100ste verjaardag!
|
De NVvW bestaat dit jaar 100 jaar, tijdens de jaarlijkse bestuursvergadering en studiedag op zaterdag 2 november werd dit op allerlei manieren gevierd. Voor veel collega’s gaf deze gelegenheid inspiratie voor een mooie workshop. Of het nu gaat over het wiskundeonderwijs van 100 jaar of zelfs 1000 jaar geleden, of over oude technieken in een nieuw jasje, met de ruim 30 workshops hieronder is er voor iedereen wat te kiezen. Desiree Agterberg heeft de plenaire lezing gegeven met titel “ 100 jaar wiskundeonderwijs”.
Monique Pijls heeft de plenaire lezing gegeven met titel "Samen Wiskunde Maken" en Wim Caspers heeft ook het stokje overgedragen aan Margot Rijnierse, die is begonnen als nieuwe voorzitter van het bestuur!

Bernoulli Society reikt de New Researcher Award 2025 uit aan Rianne de Heide
|
De Bernoulli Society New Researcher Award erkent het werk van uitmuntende jonge onderzoekers op het gebied van wiskundige statistiek en waarschijnlijkheid. Elke prijswinnaar zal een voordracht houden tijdens een speciale sessie op uitnodiging tijdens het 65e ISI World Statistics Congress dat van 5 tot 10 oktober 2025 in Den Haag wordt gehouden, en ontvangt een bijdrage van maximaal 1000 euro voor reiskosten en andere onkosten. Rianne de Heide van de Universiteit Twente ontvangt een van de drie New Researcher Awards 2025.
Het ISI World Statistics Congress is wereldwijd het toonaangevende congres over statistiek en datawetenschap. Het wordt elke twee jaar gehouden, sinds 1887 door het International Statistical Institute. Je kunt hier meer lezen over het evenement.

Nederlandse Wiskundeprijs
|
Met genoegen nodigen wij u uit om nominaties in te dienen voor de Nederlandse Wiskundeprijs, een nieuwe tweejaarlijkse prijs voor actieve wiskundigen werkzaam in Nederland, die op de datum van nominatie tussen de 45 en 60 jaar oud zijn. De prijs wordt toegekend op basis van uitzonderlijke onderzoeksbijdragen met duidelijke internationale zichtbaarheid en belangrijke bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van de wiskunde in Nederland in brede zin (inclusief onderwijs, organisatie en publiciteit). De prijs bestaat uit een geldbedrag van € 10.000 van de Thomas Stieltjes Stichting en een oorkonde. De selectie van de prijswinnaar en de prijsuitreiking worden georganiseerd door het Koninklijk Wiskundig Genootschap (KWG), de sectie Wiskunde van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) en Platform Wiskunde Nederland (PWN). Een nominatie moet bestaan uit een curriculum vitae van de kandidaat en een motivatiebrief. Zelf voordragen is niet mogelijk. De deadline voor nominaties is 31 januari 2025. Jan-Willem van Ittersum is de winnaar van de Christiaan Huygens wetenschapsprijs 2024!
|
Onderzoeker Jan-Willem van Ittersum is onderscheiden met de Christiaan Huygens Wetenschapsprijs voor zijn proefschrift ‘ Partitions and quasimodular forms; variations on the Bloch-Okounkov theorem’. Hij ontving de prijs – bestaande uit een bedrag van 10 duizend euro en een bronzen beeld van Christiaan Huygens – op 16 oktober 2024 uit handen van minister Eppo Bruins van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap. Dat gebeurde tijdens een feestelijke bijeenkomst in Voorburg. Twee onderzoekers kregen een eervolle vermelding: Rosa Schwarz van de Universiteit Leiden, voor haar proefschrift: ‘ Logarithmic approach to the double ramification cycle’ en Lucas Slot van het CWI voor zijn proefschrift: ‘A symptotic Analysis of Semidefinite Bounds for Polynomial Optimization and Independent Sets in Geometric Hypergraphs’. Annoesjka Cabo nieuwe voorzitter Commissie Onderwijs |
Vanaf 1 november is Annoesjka Cabo voorzitter van de commissie onderwijs van PWN. Samen met vice-voorzitter Wim Caspers gaat zij werken aan het belang van goed wiskundeonderwijs voor alle leerlingen in Nederland, het lerarentekort in de volle breedte en de aansluiting van het voortgezet onderwijs op het vervolgonderwijs. De leden van de commissie vormen een brede vertegenwoordiging van het wiskundeonderwijs in Nederland.

Bètadecanen honoreren het project “AI en Wiskunde: Innovatie in de Klas” van Tim Idzenga (HU, Commissie Onderwijs PWN)
|
De Hogeschool Utrecht en Platform Wiskunde Nederland organiseren summer courses voor docenten in het voortgezet onderwijs om hen te trainen in het gebruik van AI en digitale technologie in het wiskundeonderwijs. Door gebruik van AI vermindert de rekenlast voor leerlingen en is er meer ruimte voor praktische wiskundige toepassingen en de principes achter wiskundige problemen. Door de nieuwste technologische ontwikkelingen te integreren in het onderwijs, bereiden we leerlingen voor op een toekomst waarin digitale vaardigheden essentieel zijn. Dit project zal gefinancierd worden door een outreach beurs van de bètadecanen van de Nederlandse universiteiten.

Wiskunde Olympiade: huldiging medaillisten en vierdeklasser wint finale met perfecte score |
Op vrijdag 8 november vond een zeer feestelijke prijsuitreiking plaats aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, ter ere van de medaillewinnaars van de afgelopen IMO. Richard Boucherie, voorzitter van PWN, heeft de prijzen uitgereikt aan de medaillisten. We zijn ontzettend trots op de indrukwekkende prestaties van onze leerlingen! Hiernaast heeft het Universiteitsfonds Eindhoven de komende vijf jaar een prijs beschikbaar gesteld voor de winnaars uit vwo-6 van de Wiskunde Olympiade: ze hoeven het eerste studiejaar geen collegegeld à €2601 te betalen, als ze komend jaar aan een bacheloropleiding op de TU/e beginnen.

Bovendien, vierdeklasser Naïm Hofstede (15) uit Makkum heeft bij de finale van de Nederlandse Wiskunde Olympiade alle vijf opgaven perfect opgelost. Hij loste als enige van de meer dan 150 deelnemers de vijfde opgave foutloos op. In categorie klas 5 won Josiah ’t Hart uit Groningen, terwijl in categorie klas 6 Lucas van de Sande uit Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel de eerste prijs in ontvangst mag nemen. Lees hier het persbericht.

De CWI Best Thesis in Applied Math 2024 gaat naar Anne-Fleur Dijkhorst en Senna Sjambar |
De Commissie Innovatie van PWN reikt jaarlijks de CWI Best Thesis in Applied Math Award uit aan BSc en MSc scripties die wiskunde gebruiken om innovatieve oplossingen te vinden voor bedrijven, overheidsinstellingen of niet-onderwijsinstellingen. Met deze prijs vestigt de Comissie de aandacht op de waarde van wiskunde voor de maatschappij. De finalisten van de CWI Best Thesis in Applied Math Award 2024 pitchten hun werk tijdens het Math4NL community event op 11 oktober 2024. Na lang beraad koos de jury voor de BSc categorie Senna Sjambar (Haagse Hogeschool) als uiteindelijke winnaar en voor de MSc categorie is Anne-Fleur Dijkhorst (TU Delft) de winnaar. In beide gevallen was de jury unaniem, hoewel alle kandidaten het echt geweldig hebben gedaan. Voor meer details kun je hier terecht op onze website.

5 nieuwe onderzoeks-semesterprogramma's bij het CWI |
De nieuwe programma's worden samen met onderzoekers van Nederlandse universiteiten ontwikkeld en staan gepland voor 2025-2027. De ontwikkeling van RSP's is onderdeel van CWI's strategie 2022-2027 en draagt bij aan CWI's doel om een nationale ontmoetingsplaats te zijn voor samenwerking op het gebied van wiskunde en informaticaonderzoek. Uit de ingediende voorstellen zijn er 5 geselecteerd, namelijk:
- PhaseCAP: Fasetransities in Combinatoriek,
- Opsporen en tegengaan van desinformatie in het tijdperk van LLM's. De waarheid ligt in de ogen van de machines,
- Synergieën in numerieke lineaire algebra en machinaal leren,
- Kwantumalgoritmen en kwantumfoutcorrectie,
- Democratisering van probleemgerichte optimalisatie in de echte wereld.

Ars et Mathesis-dag en Bridges conferentie |
Iedere derde zaterdag in november wordt de jaarlijkse Ars et Mathesis-dag gehouden, ditmaal vond deze plaats in Eindhoven. Er wordt altijd een symposium met een aantrekkelijk programma geboden, gecombineerd met de mogelijkheid om je te laten inspireren door het werk van de diverse exposanten. Donateurs ( https://www.arsetmathesis.nl/donateurs/) hebben gratis toegang tot de A&M-dag en krijgen bij de toegang het nieuwe jaarboek uitgereikt. Tijdens de bijeenkomst in Eindhoven waren er vele exposanten, onder andere ook Henk van der Vorst, voormalig hoogleraar numerieke wiskunde, met zijn wiskundige origami kunstwerken. De dag werd geopend door Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel, voormalig voorzitter van PWN, waarna enige mooie lezingen volgden. Een van de lezingen ging over het plastische getal, een soort generalisatie van de gulden snede. Het is altijd een leuke dag met veel kunst welke zijn oorsprong heeft in de wiskunde.
Interessante mededeling: volgend jaar zal aan de TU Eindhoven de jaarlijkse Bridges Conferentie plaatsvinden. De organisatie Bridges wil verbindingen leggen tussen wiskunde, kunst, muziek, architectuur en cultuur. Nine VIDI grants were awarded to mathematicians
|
NWO has awarded in total to 102 experienced researchers a Vidi grant worth 850,000 euros. The grant enables them to develop their own innovative line of research and set up their own research group. The following 9 researchers from mathematics were chosen:

NWA finances project on "Emergence at all scales" (EAAS) – Call for NWA Outreach 2025 is open
|
A national program on "Emergence at all scales" (EAAS) has just been awarded by NWO as part of their Research on Routes by Consortia (ORC) program line of the Dutch Research Agenda (NWA). This interdisciplinary consortium explores the many cases of emergence in the natural sciences and in mathematics. Some of the fundamental questions that will be addressed by the consortium include:
- the quest to understand how space, time, gravity and the universe seem to emerge from almost nothing;
- how matter at all scales organizes itself into different phases that exhibit myriad properties including those similar to living systems;
- mathematical insights into universal properties of emergence across physical systems - ranging from spectral theory through network analysis, to information theory and hydrodynamic limits – that provide a common language for emergent phenomena.
Beyond the natural sciences and mathematics, emergence is playing an increasingly central role in the social and economic sciences and has also inspired many sectors of society, including artists and the public at large. The consortium will engage with society in a variety of ways through citizen science, societally driven research, science-inspired art, science communication and education. Walter van Suijlekom (RU, and chair of the committee Research of PWN) is a member of the executive board, where he represents mathematics.
NWO is making one and a half million euros available for science communication projects that aim to strengthen the connection between science and society. Professionals from knowledge institutions, museums and other public research organisations can submit a proposal in this new round of the science communication call of the Dutch Research Agenda (NWA). The deadline for submitting proposals is Tuesday 25 February 2025, by 14:00:00 CET.

Bernoulli Society awards New Researcher Award 2025 to Rianne de Heide
|
The Bernoulli Society New Researcher Award recognizes the work of outstanding young researchers in the fields of Mathematical Statistics and Probability. Each awardee shall deliver a talk at a special invited session during the 65th ISI World Statistics Congress to be held in The Hague from October 5-10, 2025, and will receive a funding up to 1000 EUR to offset travel and other expenses. Rianne de Heide, from the University of Twente, is awarded one of the three New Researcher Awards 2025.
The ISI World Statistics Congress is the leading congress on Statistics & Data Science worldwide. It is held every two years, since 1887 by the International Statistical Institute. You can read more about the event here.

Dutch Prize for Mathematics
|
It is a pleasure to invite you to submit nominations for the Nederlandse Wiskundeprijs, a new bi-annual prize for active mathematicians working in the Netherlands, who are between 45 and 60 years old on the date of nomination. The prize will be awarded on the basis of exceptional research contributions with clear international visibility as well as important contributions to the development of mathematics in the Netherlands in a broad sense (including education, organization and publicity). The prize consists of a monetary award of 10k€ from the Thomas Stieltjes Foundation and a certificate. The selection of the awardee and the award ceremony is organized by the Royal Dutch Mathematical Society (KWG), the section Mathematics of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) and Platform Wiskunde Nederland (PWN). A nomination should consist of a curriculum vitae of the candidate and a letter of motivation. Self-nominations are not possible. The deadline for nominations is January 31, 2025. Jan-Willem van Ittersum was awarded the Christiaan Huygens Science Prize 2024!
|
The Christiaan Huygens Science Prize honors a young researcher who has made an innovative contribution to astronomy, mathematics, or physics in their dissertation. The prize has been awarded annually since 1998. In 2024, the field of mathematics was central. The prize was awarded on the 16th of October to mathematician Jan Willem van Ittersum, who completed his PhD three years ago at Utrecht University! His thesis has title ‘ Partitions and quasimodular forms; variations on the Bloch-Okounkov theorem’. Rosa Schwartz from Leiden Science - Universiteit Leiden and Lucas Slot from the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, who were also nominated for the award, received an honorary distinction. Tim Idzenga (HU, Education Committee PWN) received funding from the Bètadecanen for the project “AI and math: Innovation in the classroom”
|
The Utrecht University of Applied Sciences and the Platform Mathematics Netherlands are organizing summer courses for secondary education teachers to train them in the use of AI and digital technology in mathematics education. By using AI, the computational load for students is reduced, allowing more room for practical mathematical applications and the principles behind mathematical problems. By integrating the latest technological developments into education, we prepare students for a future where digital skills are essential. This project will be funded by an outreach grant from the science deans of Dutch universities.

The CWI Best Thesis in Applied Math 2024 goes to Anne-Fleur Dijkhorst and Senna Sjambar
|
The Innovation Committee awards the annual CWI Best Thesis in Applied Math Award for BSc and MSc theses that use mathematics to find innovative solutions for companies, government agencies or non-educational institutes. With this award, the Innovation Committee draws attention to the value of mathematics for society. The finalists of the 2024 CWI Best Thesis in Applied Math Award pitched their work at the Math4NL community event on October 11, 2024. After a long deliberation, the jury for the BSc category chose Senna Sjambar (The Hague university of applied sciences) as the ultimate winner and the jury for the MSc category selected Anne-Fleur Dijkhorst (Delft University of Technology). 5 new research semester programmes schedules at the CWI |
The new programmes will be developed together with researchers from Dutch universities and are planned for 2025-2027. The development of RSP’s is part of CWI’s strategy 2022-2027, contributing to CWI’s goal to be a national meeting place for collaboration in the area of mathematics and computer science research. From the submitted proposals, 5 were selected, namely
- PhaseCAP: Phase Transitions in Combinatoricse;
- Misinformation detection and countering in the era of LLMs. Truth Is in the Eyes of the Machines;
- Synergies in numerical linear algebra and machine learning;
- Quantum Algorithms and Quantum Error Correction;
- Democratising Real-World Problem Tailored Optimisation.

Ars et Mathesis day and Bridges conference
|
Every third Saturday in November, the annual Ars et Mathesis day is held, this time it took place in Eindhoven. It always offers a symposium with an attractive programme, combined with the opportunity to be inspired by the work of the various exhibitors. Donors ( https://www.arsetmathesis.nl/donateurs/) have free admission to the A&M day and are presented with the new yearbook upon admission.
At the meeting in Eindhoven, there were many exhibitors, including Henk van der Vorst, former professor of numerical mathematics, with his mathematical origami artworks. The day was opened by Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel, former chairman of PWN, followed by some nice lectures. One of the lectures was about the plastic number, a kind of generalisation of the golden ratio. It is always a fun day with lots of art which has its origins in mathematics.
Interesting announcement: next year, TU Eindhoven will host the annual Bridges Conference. The Bridges organisation aims to make connections between mathematics, art, music, architecture and culture. The conference will take place from 14 to 18 July, more information can be found here:
