It's that time of the year again - the BPS Annual General Meeting. Full details of the meeting, together with associated attachments were sent to all members on 26 June. However, if you have lost or misplaced any of the documents, please find links below to download them: |

After the more mundane part of the evening, we will be pumping up the excitement with the presentation of cups & awards gained by members throughout the year, with a "memory jogger" presentation by Rachel Domleo showing the award-winning images.
The evening will be rounded off with short presentations by two of our newer members, Urmila Kerslake and John Cato, when they will be showing us a collection of their recent work.

Our speaker on 29 August is Mark Humphrey who will be presenting his talk: Getting Creative with Wildlife Photography. Mark says this about his talk:
This talk is about utilising different creative techniques within your wildlife photography. The “perfect” conditions are a rare occurrence when you’re out in nature, so it’s important to have an arsenal of different techniques to fall back on to make the most out of a photography session, no matter the weather, lighting conditions or time of day. I’ll be showing plenty of examples of different creative ideas and explaining how you to use them to help you get a varied portfolio of images.

The next Digital Imaging Group Meeting will be on Monday 10 August at 7.30pm.
Meetings are informal and take place at the clubrooms and via zoom.
If you would like to share your images at the August meeting, please send them to me at dig@bristolphoto.org.uk by Friday 7 August. Please number your images in the order you would like them to be viewed and resize to the usual competition size, not essential but helps to keep the files to a manageable size If you could please restrict the number of images to a maximum of 30, this will ensure that we enjoy a wide variety of subjects.
Many thanks to all those who contributed to the June meeting, we were treated to an inspiring variety of photos, see below a selection of images we enjoyed.
These meetings are a great opportunity for all members to share images outside the competition environment. The aim of these evenings is to share knowledge, projects, expertise, ideas and to obtain feedback and inspiration. So think about what techniques or tips you can share for the benefit of others, or what you might want help/feedback on.
DIG is the perfect environment for newer and less experienced members to pick up hints and tips or receive specific feedback to improve their photography and editing skills. BPS has many experienced members with diverse interests and styles who would be happy to help. If you are unsure whom to approach, just ask and someone will help or point you in the right direction.
If you have a more detailed topic/technique to share, then let me know and we can schedule a longer more focused session, or feature this on one of the intervening practical evenings.

Monday 20 July: Following a very successful session previously, Simon will return providing an opportunity to get some images illustrating the criminal underworld. Think crowbars, sledgehammers, and maybe a weapon or two.
Monday 27 July: As this coincides with the date of Barry Mead’s funeral, the morning session will be shortened to 10am – 12.30pm (theme/subject still to be decided) and there is no afternoon session. This will allow time for those who wish to attend the funeral, to do so. Ellie and her critters have been re-scheduled for the following week.
Monday 3 August: Something special! Snakes/Tarantula and other critters. Mike’s friend, Ellie will be accompanied by a selection of her animals. There will be an opportunity for members to have a snap with their favourite, as well as photographing the animals with Ellie.
- Morning Session: 10am - 1pm – All welcome, no need to book. Please note higher
cost of £15 per person*
- Afternoon session: 1.15pm - 4.15pm – LIMITED NUMBERS, booking essential. £30 per person*

PAGB Interclub PDI Competition

THIS WEEKEND
Following BPS' success at the WCPF Interclub Competition at Exeter earlier in the year, we will be representing the region in the PAGB Interclub PDI Championships at Warwick on 19 July. To plagiarise W&G, this is always a "grand day out", a chance to see some of the best images in the Country and also to meet fellow photographers from across the country, and who knows, you might even be able to put a face to a name.

The Creative Competition was held last Wednesday and was judged by Phil Cooling FRPS. The overall winner of the Bob Faris Trophy was Rachel Domleo with her PDI entitled A Changing World.

There are a couple of new distinctions being added to the Welsh Federation's portfolio, Licentiate LWPF and Master MWPF. At present the Licentiate will only be open to WPF members, but the MWPF will be open to all. If you'd like more information, send an email to wpfma@thewpf.co.uk |
Get Your Dancing Shoes On! |
I have received the following from BPS member, Andrew Harrington:
If anyone is interested in getting some pictures of swing dance on Bristol streets, the Big R band is playing at the Louisiana pub on Sunday 15:00. If the weather is good they will play outside and there will be dancing (mainly Lindy Hop). If it rains they will be inside so dancing may be limited.

Instagram just got EVEN worse. Your public photos can now be used for AI-generated images.
If you thought Meta (aka Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp) couldn’t get any worse, well it just did. The platform is now facing backlash over its new AI tool Muse Image, which allows users to generate AI pictures from not just profile pictures, but also your public images.
In a recent update to Instagram, users with a public account have had Meta’s new AI features turned on by default without consent. Meaning that anyone can @- mention Instagram accounts in the Meta AI app to bring specific Instagram profiles, download and use your photos, reels, original audio in reels, stories and profile photos to generate their own AI pictures in Muse Image, the first image generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, now available in Meta AI. If you have a private account, content will already be unable to be shared BUT if you change from Private to Public, this will auto-enrol you.

NEXT WEEK: Wex Roadshow - Thursday 23 July |
|
BPS will be playing host to WEX and their annual Roadshow on 23 July. They are holding a series of 30-45 minutes talks on the hour, by a number of well-known photography brand ambassadors or speakers as well as running a couple of organised Street walks in the local area. An outline of the day is available on their website where you can book tickets.
NOTE: Due to the number of speakers, etc, there will be NO parking available at Unit 13 so bear that in mind if you intend booking one or more sessions.

Well done to a couple of BPS members who have continued to climb the FIAP ladder of distinctions success: Rachel Domleo who is now EFIAP/b and Derwood Pamphilon who is now EFIAP/p.
In addition to these two successes, we were also notified that Barry Mead had risen to the heady heights of EFIAP/d4, which, sadly, wasn't made public until a week after his untimely death.

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Epson SC P600 A3 printer - FREE to a good home. At present fitted with compatible refillable cartridges, which printer doesn't seem to like! Probably just needs a set of Epson inks. You can tell by the number of my prints you've seen at club that it hasn't been used very much!
