We’re so grateful to Enzo Silon Surin for having Editor/Director Rebecca Hart Olander on his podcast “It’s
a Poetic Life” for “Press Enter: The Heart-Labor of Small Presses and the Creative Minds Behind Them.” This project explores why the “yes of a small press is so profound” and “pulls back the curtain on small press publishing.” Thank
you, Enzo, for the beautiful work you do as poet, professor, publisher & podcast wizard, and for the spirit of love, generosity, inspiration & kindness with which you do it.

This Family as Kaleidoscope & Afterlight

We are an observation of beautiful
forms. Revolving bodies inside a chamber
that spins and spits, bits and micro-bits
of blues & blood, cataclysm and bliss.
Begot from George Washington Nichols—
snatched from our Mother’s land and sea.
Forced from his form again and again, we
are fragmented glass, his beginnings reflect
our future. Some witness recurrently, others
become revolving mirrors devouring any surviving
lumen. Stolen double helixes. We coexist. In
the light, we turn dark, a multitudinous vessel.
Illuminated. Resplendent. Each other’s echo.
An observation of beautiful forms, we are.

Submissions are open for AWP’s Small Press Publisher Award! This prize recognizes the important role nonprofit presses play in publishing creative works and introducing new authors to the reading public, acknowledging contributions to the literary landscape through the publication of consistently excellent work. Letters of nomination are accepted September 1–October 31 via the online submission portal at AWP. This award would provide vital support, and we'd be honored if you'd consider writing a letter to nominate Perugia Press!

Perugia relies on collaboration with our community to continue our work. Your donations help us to provide
greater access to our contest for emerging poets, to create beautiful, important books, and to support our poets as
their work gains a wider audience. Thank you for joining
our mission to bring new women poets, inclusive of
gender-expansive identities, to print.
