"Shanti's Shadow breathes new life into a genre that's sometimes so respectful of the past, it fails to push toward the future."
- Rolling Stone Country
"Shanti’s Shadow, the transcendent new album by Phoebe Hunt & the Gatherers, deepens the singer’s roots into Americana songwriting and gypsy jazz.” - Austin Chronicle
"There's power, passion and determination in Hunt's "Lint Head Gal" — qualities Hunt herself embodies.” - NPR Music
“She is back with a refreshed take on the bluegrass/gypsy jazz that distinguished her first band The Belleville Outfit. Travels in India and study with an Indian violin master have injected a microtonal raga sensibility into her songs, which are arranged with great subtlety for a six piece band.” - Bluegrass Situation
Celebrated Americana artist Shakey Graves will perform an opening set at Phoebe Hunt's headlining show at Austin's Paramount Theatre on June 2nd. The show falls on the release date of her acclaimed new album Shanti's Shadow, and will also serve as a birthday celebration for both the Austin-raised fiddler and Graves.
"The album's title hints at the otherworldly music within, with Hunt merging her Appalachian-style fiddle chops with Texas twang, Indian ragas, gypsy jazz, unfamiliar time signatures and the free-spirited fun of a jam band leader," they write. "The resulting record breathes new life into a genre that's sometimes so respectful of the past, it fails to push toward the future."
Austin Chronicle recently premiered the video for "Just For Tonight." The "jubliant," "spontaneously conceived" clip follows Phoebe as she attends a local carnival and dances with unsuspecting carnival-goers.
"Just For Tonight"
An accomplished songwriter and instrumentalist, Hunt makes an impressive leap with Shanti's Shadow. It's the culmination of a five year journey that has taken her from her Austin roots through Music Row, Brooklyn and even to India to study with seventh-generation master violinist Kala Ramnath. Along the way, Phoebe found her voice and delivered her most inspired set of songs to date -- the soundtrack to her self-discovery.
Folk Alley debuted the album's lead single "Lint Head Gal," a stomping country blues song about a hard working, independent woman. The song was added to NPR Music's "Heavy Rotation: 10 Songs Public Radio Can't Stop Playing" and embraced by World Cafe. Relix premiered the video for "Pink and Blue," which highlights her virtuosic band The Gatherers.
Phoebe Hunt and the Gatherers' upcoming tour includes a headlining show at Austin's Paramount Theatre on June 2nd, and appearances at several folk festivals. See tour dates and more information below.
