This week, we highlight plays that explore a person's conscious self. We take a trip and explore love, sexuality, queerness, survival, parenting and one own's development. Exploration and discovery can often be a struggle, but well worth the try. Watch these plays unfold the mystery of consciousness.

THE NUMBER
Imagine being eighteen, being in college, travelling abroad and falling in love for the first time. Imagine then that your love was a crime… Set in modern day Ireland, the narrator of ‘The Number’ looks back with humour on his teenaged self – the fear, loneliness and hope he felt, and that day in 1993 when being gay was no longer a crime.

A DRUNK LESBIAN LOVE AFFAIR

They’re young. They’re drunk. They’re in love…until they sober up. A Drunk Lesbian Love Affair chronicles the escapades of Sally and her “drunk lesbian lover” through a haze of whiskey and wine. A one-person show, performed and penned by Gonzalez Kane explores the vulnerability of love and sexuality, queerness and coming into one’s own. This tender-hearted comedy combines millennial discourse with poeticism in the search for a sober love.

A SOUTHERN FAIRYTALE

A coming-of-age/coming out drama about a gay Christian living in the Deep South
Based on true events, A Southern Fairytale artfully illuminates the challenges facing a young, gay Christian growing up in the Deep South. As we accompany the protagonist through multiple journeys into and out of the closet, the audience emotionally connects with the very real impacts of conversion therapy, excommunication, and a father who believes that a demon has possessed his son.
Written and performed with deep passion and the insight only gained through personal experience, Autry skillfully explores the trauma of rejection by those we love. As family and friends impose extreme measures to reshape him to fit their ideal, the young man is left isolated and alone. Will he ever thrive – or even just simply survive – if he chooses to live as he was born? Is happiness possible when the only faith you have ever known, not to mention everyone you love, demands that you are wrong and living a life of sin?

SCHLONG SONG
Stand-up storytelling, hip-hop heroics, and emotional nudity collide in Woody Shticks’ smash-hit smackdown of sexual misadventure! Back in the day, Woody’s stash of locker room undies was not the weirdest thing hiding in his family’s log cabin, but it’s a pretty big tip off that he’s not like the others in his conservative Christian school. Then, deemed “too gay to book anything but children’s theatre,” Woody splits New York City to discover just how many people can use him to pry open their closet doors. But a risky rendezvous on the other side of the world connects the dots between a lifetime of conditioning and some very specific positioning to prove that love and sex are (thankfully) not the same at all. Hop on the scenic route to the bone zone – through good sex, bad luck, and the warmest corners of your own sticky mind – in this honest onslaught of hanky-panky hijinks!
Schlong Song is masturminded by American comic stripper Woody Shticks, who’s taught children’s theatre in 48 United States, toured the world with America’s Chekhov company, and pole-danced his way into the hearts and pants of the Pacific Northwest. Woody’s a founding producer of acclaimed interarts gang The Libertinis, festival headliner around the USA, and a prized performer with Bawdy Storytelling, NOLAW (New Orleans), and house parties everywhere.
