Jaw clenching, sonic quenching, panty drenching stomp-rock licks, melding with raw, driving grooves to form a perfectly harmonious brew that will pound your brain into submission. Here’s to the spirit of rock n roll – filtered through a stompbox and blasted through a boom box. The melodic hard rock of Queens Of The Stone Age with the live energy of The Hives. Dirty, flirty, throbbing songs, to ease the pain and please the throngs. Sit back, buckle up and surrender to the boozy swagger of these stomp rock-meisters from Bath as they create the soundtrack for a modern uprising.

Bite the Buffalo recently headlined two stages at Glastonbury Festival and rocked the ARC stage at Larmer Tree Festival 2016. Their forthcoming album ‘Big Blind’ was produced by Chris Ellul from The Heavy with whom they supported at Heaven, London and the O2 Bristol. They have just signed a deal with the publishing arm of Ninja Tune. Their song ‘Dear Devil Woman’ was featured in the USA series of Shameless (season 6 episode 4) and they have had songs used in a Spotify advert as well as in The Crew video game.

Pink Hotel
Are a raw and energetic UK rock n roll band. They perform with attitude and style, infusing bold and direct lyrics with sonic guitars and memorable hooks.

“One of the purest, clearest talents I know, a fabulous singer, bursting with raw Irish soul. Striking and original songs and an effortlessly brilliant band”. Brian Eno

Rightly regarded as one of the great soul voices in Ireland, Bronagh Gallagher was raised in Derry and now lives in Dublin. At the age of 17, whilst still a St Mary’s schoolgirl, she was cast as Bernie McGloughlin in Alan Parker’s film about a Dublin soul band, The Commitments. Since then her music has alternated with film roles (Pulp Fiction, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Sherlock Holmes) plus theatre work (War Horse, The Street Of Crocodiles) and TV drama (Pramface, The Street, You Me And the Apocalypse). However she maintains a special place for singing, writing and performing music.

Informed by a love of girl groups like the Shangri Las, producers like Phil Spector and Shadow Morton, WillyDeVille and his Chicano street smarts and the narrative sweep of Ennio Morricone and Scott Walker, the backdrop to Gather Your Greatness came as a response to some difficult challenges in Bronagh’s life: “It’s been the toughest record of all. There’s a brilliant and wonderful side to life – usually connected to music. But there’s the very tough times as well and the stuff that life brings you that you don’t expect. And the stuff that life doesn’t bring you and you do expect.”

After a number of different releases and years of touring, Montclair, New Jersey’s Pinegrove have offered their finest work to date with their newest LP, Cardinal. The band’s captivating blend of indie rock, pop and country elements is more vivid, fine-tuned, and addictive than ever before. Vocalist/guitarist Evan Stephens Hall and drummer Zack Levine (drums) form a core that has been playing together since early childhood. Painting his emotions onto these songs with colorful and kinetic strokes, Hall moves through Cardinal’s eight songs with unforgettable energy and passion, with a vocal performance that is pleasantly reminiscent of Will Oldham and Built to Spill’s Doug Martsch. Highlighted by the downtrodden nostalgia of twangy opener “Old Friends” and the climactic refrain of “Size of the Moon,” where the confession “I don’t know what I’m afraid of,” is just as much of a sing-a-long as it is an emotional breakdown, moods don’t stay in one place for very long on Cardinal – they are carefully crafted and revisited throughout to continually evoke the album’s central themes of memory, language, and home. Pinegrove are touring across the UK and EU this September / October 2016.

Since forming in late 2006, the music of Louis Barabbas & The Bedlam Six has infiltrated almost every creative niche, being adapted into animated short films, burlesque routines, musical theatre, fringe festival revues, documentary soundtracks, motion picture scores and even a comic strip.

Over the years they have won praise and support from the likes of Supergrass, The Mighty Boosh, Har Mar Superstar, UB40, Mark Steel, The Hell’s Angels, BBC Radio and the Allen Ginsberg: Beat Poet biographer Barry Miles – both for their furious onstage energy and Louis’ manic lyrical gymnastics.

Their infamous live shows – incorporating rock, jazz, folk and theatre influences – have demonstrated time and time again that the group is at home on any line-up, sharing the bill with such disparate acts as Motorhead, Sun Ra’s Arkestra, I Am Kloot, Eliza Carthy, The Blockheads, Emmanuel Jal and Buzzcocks. They have toured Europe, the USA and Mexico, inspiring stage invasions, dancing in the aisles and a confused mixture of exhaustion and bonhomie wherever they go.

Anna Of The North, Man & The Echo, Avante Black

Pias Nites presents

When: 20/09/2016 07:00 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £7.50
Ticket Link: http://www.rockfeedback.com/concerts/detail/pias-nites-anna-of-the-north-man-the-echo-avante-black

ANNA OF THE NORTH

Oslo based duo Anna of the North unveil new single “Us” – the fascinatingly fragmented, synth-driven follow up to previous singles “Sway”, “The Dreamer” and “Baby”, “Us” delves deeper into Anna of the North’s lore and emotion, dusk into evening and all the promise — good and bad — that night brings.

“Anna of the North brings out Scandi-pop’s sensitive side” – The FADER
“expansive, gorgeously crafted pop music” – Pigeons and Planes
“twisting and warping the dreamlike blueprint of her forebears to gorgeous effect” – NME
“dark, chamber-pop music that carries us away into our deepest of feelings” – Nylon

MAN & THE ECHO

There is a bit of Sheffield’s finest’s era-defining mix of smart, observational pop and musical glam about Man & The Echo. But there’s also a bit of ABC, The Smiths, the Divine Comedy, Dexys, Super Furry Animals, blue eyed soul, 50s/60s crooning, literary references, social commentary, humour and much more, as they have arrived at a sound that isn’t retro so much as ricocheting through pop’s many decades and landing squarely in the post-Brexit, conflicted, chaotic UK of the here and now.

AVANTE BLACK

Avante Black reads like the United Nations of pop with frontwoman Ottilia and guitarist Emil hailing from Sweden, bassist Gabs from Italy and keeping the beat, Dean on drums from the United Kingdom. Barely out of theirteens and with just 10 gigs under their belt, their sonically intense live performances have caught the ears of some notable musicians including Ed Harcourt and Bill Ryder-Jones who Ottilia has been writing some new tracks with. With releases from September, a debut album is expected early next year.

Tickets are on sale now.

X-posure Live presents

When: 28/09/2016 07:16 pm
Location: Upstairs

‘The track is a gristly, grisly slab of howling indie rock, with barbed yowls

and serpentine riffs bursting through fuzzed-out punk beats.’ – TLOBF

‘Bolshie choruses buoyed the woozy Mazzy Star obsessions, giving

them a punk edge that many bands with the same set of influences (you

can add The Jesus And Mary Chain and The Raveonettes to Hope

Sandoval’s troupe) simply don’t ever come close to having.’ – NME

‘Coves make crisp, inspiring rock music with a shoegaze edge’ – Clash

‘‘You’re Evil’ follows the tracks of foot-stomping, anthemic guitar hooks

and heavy percussion. Only this time they’ve decided to capitalise on

the incredible layered vocal harmonies to create a barging rock track’ –

Tenement TV

‘Having steadily picked up a following with their indie-rock/shoegaze-

edged style, scuzzy guitars and the howled vocals of Beck Wood,

'You're Evil' continues the guitar-driven stomp’ – Little Indie Blogs

‘With their shimmering psychedelic indie sounds, scuzzy guitars and

sweetly pop tinged vocals, Coves are setting themselves up for a very

promising 2016.’ – Gigslutz

Danish guitar janglers with a pop sheen Virgin Suicide, Norwegian heart-throb baritone Tellef Raabe and Swedish popster Mavrick.

VIRGIN SUICIDE | DENMARK

Danish outfit Virgin Suicide find inspiration in jangly guitar-based pop music reminiscent of that found in certain pockets of the UK in the 60s, as well as the 80s. Turning elements of these throwback sounds into fresh and invigorating new noise, the band have spent 2016 enchanting crowds at the likes of by:Larm festival in Oslo, and at Roskilde Festival in their native Denmark.

TELLEF RAABE | NORWAY

Norwegian singer songwriter Tellef Raabe is inspired by the likes of The National and Neil Young. His smart, dark, eclectic and catchy indie-pop, combined with his deep and rich voice, has attracted attention from music lovers over the past years.

MAVRICK | SWEDEN

Inspired by the textured drama of Massive Attack, the pop experimentation of Prince and the rhythmic pulse of Thom Yorke’s solo adventures, Sweden’s Mavrick, aka 25-year-old Marcus Sennewal channels the spirit of these musical, er, mavericks into a framework of classic pop songwriting.

Stephen Steinbrink, Samara Lubelski, LC Pumpkin

Upset The Rhythm presents

When: 04/10/2016 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £7.50
Ticket Link: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/363905

STEPHEN STEINBRINK is an American songwriter, born in Phoenix, AZ and currently residing in Oakland, CA. After more than ten years of touring and secluded home recording, Stephen Steinbrink has cataloged several albums worth of gorgeous melody, quotidian dread and desert blight in his stark, minimal pop. Yet the songs on his latest record ‘Anagrams’, beautiful yet unflinching portraits of addiction and mental illness are captured in his most meticulous and high-fidelity production to date. While one might expect the record to be a final destination, a tidy hi-res culmination of all this journeying, the album’s particularly varied styles and sincere lyrical uncertainty portray a search that still continues. Stephen’s artistic trajectory can be considered nomadic in the obvious sense: when not incessantly touring Europe and the U.S. in the last two years, he spent his stationary moments on his beloved, spaced-out west coast, writing in Olympia, Washington; Oakland, California and Phoenix, Arizona. But as a self-taught producer, audio fidelity itself proves to be an equally accurate gauge of his craft. Like many songwriters, he cut his teeth in the tape hiss and bedroom hum of lo-fi 4-track endeavors. Then in 2014, he released an unabashedly digital tableaux of subdued, heartbreaking pop, aptly titled Arranged Waves. Now, Anagrams (out now on Melodic) finds him chasing melodies in the polished largesse of a proper studio.

SAMARA LUBELSKI is a songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, improviser, and engineer. With a voluminous musical pedigree, the list of artists (individually and collectively) that Lubelski has played, performed or recorded with, reads out like a best-of the who’s who of the art, noise, free, improve scenes. Hall of Fame, The Tower Recordings, MV and EE, and Thurston Moore are just the beginning of what can be mentioned here. Her first solo outing, 1997’s ‘In the Valley’, was a major installment in the recorded legacy of experimental string music, a dense exploration of drones and resonance. This was followed in 2004 with a full-band recording of lush psychedelic folk-rock for ‘The Fleeting Skies’. Since then, Lubelski has released a wonderfully colorful series of albums: ‘Spectacular Of Passages’ (2005), ‘Parallel Suns’ (2007), ‘Future Slip’ (2009) and ‘Wavelength’ (2012). Her current projects include an improvisational duo with Marcia Bassett and a long-standing collaboration with German collective Metabolismus. Additionally, Ms. Lubelski has worked with the prolific Thurston Moore on a variety of outings, including playing violin on Mr. Moore’s solo records ‘Trees Outside the Academy’ and ‘Demolished Thoughts’ and recording and touring with his band Chelsea Light Moving. Her most recent solo violin record, ‘String Cycle’, was released in 2014, and ‘Augenmusik’, a Metabolismus improvised collaboration, issued a cassette in 2015. Released in 2016 by Drawing Room Records, new album ‘The Gilded Age’ represents Lubelski’s most current offering; a highly refined pop record displaying all her baroque genius.

LC PUMPKIN is the low-fidelity solo offshoot from shambolic, cod-garage rockers Les Cactus & the Rumpy Pumpkins. Warping keyboards, fuzz-banjo, blown-out drum machine beats and extremely catchy songwriting.

Marking a gleeful departure from 2014’s hook-laden breakthrough, Just Enough Hip To Be Woman, Double Vanity see’s BRONCHO refined, shifting gear and cruising through a haze of atmospheric garage rock textures, dark, jagged reverbs and androgynous, elastic vocals. “The goal was to slow things down but still have as much energy, and in a lot of ways I think Double Vanity has more energy than our previous records,” frontman Ryan Lindsey reveals. “Maybe it’s more of an emotional energy. Not necessarily lyrically, or idea-wise, but melodically and sound-wise. There’s more emotion to me when I hear this record than there was on our previous records.”

Featuring the highlights, ‘Señora Borealis’ and ‘Fantasy Boys’, Double Vanity sees Lindsey and bandmates Ben King, Nathan Price and Penny Pitchlynn vigorously striding ahead, transforming the raw angst of their first record, Can’t Get Past the Lips, and their irresistible second LP, Just Enough Hip To Be Woman, into a sound decidedly more layered and complex. Tracks like ‘New Karma’ and ‘Two Step’ riff off the later explorations of punk, culling up refracted images of John Hughes prom nights, love songs echoing from a boombox held high. Elsewhere ‘Jenny Loves Jenae’ and ‘Speed Demon’ strut with an 80s-meets-50s swagger – discord transformed into a jagged, frenetic pop. ‘I Know You’ is simultaneously infectious and brooding, somehow both exalting and heartsick.

Just Enough Hip To Be Woman saw fantastic success, with the infectious ‘Class Historian’ single spending over a month on the playlist at BBC 6Music. The record was dubbed “fresh and invigorating” by the NME, “unequivocally strong in their near mastery of sunny melodies and deft pop sensibilities” by Consequence Of Sound, and received further acclaim from The Independent, Noisey, Mojo and more. Their subsequent debut European tour saw sold-out shows across the capital.

The Great Detachment, Wintersleep’s sixth LP and first with Dine Alone Records, is very much an introspective work, both conceptually and thematically. Of course, it delivers a welcome dose of the atmospheric, entrancing alt-rock for which the band has become known – the beautifully orchestrated arrangements anchored by haunting, almost hypnotic vocal melodies; however, the way those arrangements were approached and the poetry they relay are very much the product of some self-(re)discovery.

Xylaroo
Xylaroo are Holly and Coco Chant: two sisters, two peas in a pod, two harmonious voices cut only from the same cloth as each other. Similar to many bands, the pair (Holly aged 25, Coco 23) are a product of their own environment. What makes them totally at odds with everyone else, however, is that their environment has been constantly shifting since day one. You could say they’ve been “on the road” their whole lives.

onDeadWaves
Originally brought together by Mute founder Daniel Miller for 2011’s Mute Short Circuit Festival, the duo of Maps’ James Chapman and fellow labelmate Polly Scattergood decided to continue their collaboration as On Dead Waves. With both artists releasing solo albums in 2013 — Maps’ Vicissitude and Scattergood’s Arrows — the pair finally reconvened at Chapman’s home studio to start writing what would eventually become their debut album. Sharing the same musical vision, the pair drew inspiration from the likes of Low, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen to create a sound that would have a real cinematic feeling. Preceded by the singles “California,” “Blackbird,” and “Blue Inside,” the self-titled album was released in May, 2016.

On Psychopomp, the debut full-length for Japanese Breakfast, Michelle Zauner romanticises need, knowing precisely how futile it can be, as she howls on the record’s final song, to “cling to your sleeves ’til they’re like lacerated sails.” She drew from the masters of the form—Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn—for “the way they sing with over-exaggerated longing, wail on the inability to go on without someone.” Originally, recorded as a straight forward rock record, indebted to country and folk lineages, Michelle co-produced Psychopomp with Ned Eisenberg to give it what she calls “a psychotic pop sound.”

Since Psychopomp was released in America in March by Maryland indie Yellow K, it’s become one of the year’s most beloved indie-pop records, receiving plaudits from the likes of Pitchfork and NPR. On August 19th, Dead Oceans will release it properly in the Europe, and Michelle will be making her debut UK live appearances to coincide.

Live Nation presents

When: 03/11/2016 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £8
Ticket Link: http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/event/msf0311

  • Act One, the debut full-length from songwriting duo Marian Hill, was written and produced in its entirety by Jeremy Lloyd (music/lyrics/production) and Samantha Gongol (music/lyrics/vocals). The multi-talented duo, who have been collaborating in one form or another since high school, have shifted the classic paradigm of a woman on a stage and a man with a piano to a woman on a mic and a man with a laptop — and the results are seductive and vivid. Tempting paradox with a blend of blues and bass, acoustic and digital, classic and modern, Marian Hill have arrived.

Two years ago Sam and Jeremy wrote and recorded “Whisky” over spring break in Jeremy’s parents’ basement. When they released it for free on Soundcloud later that summer it was the only song they’d written for the project, and in a little over a year’s time they had recorded their first EP in a bedroom, amassed millions of plays on various platforms, sold out shows across the country and featured in high profile commercials. They signed to Republic Records in early 2015, released the Sway EP, and settled in to write and record their debut album over the course of the following year with a plan to push their unique sound to its fullest potential.

For the first 50 seconds of “Down” you might think you’re at a supper club in the 1920s, but when the bass drops out of nowhere you couldn’t be anywhere but 2016. Act One then takes you on a journey through the complexities of modern relationships, with each song inhabiting a specific and charged relationship lyrically, melodically, and sonically. “I Know Why” constantly transforms and reinvents itself as the vocals grapple with a secret while “Mistaken” is the hardest of sax trap with a classic songwriting backbone. “Same Thing” is the saddest part of the album, a haunting ballad depicting serene resignation of a doomed relationship, but castanets rise from the ashes as “I Want You” closes out the night in a pure moment of optimistic electricity, a glance across a crowded room that changes everything.

Marian Hill’s one of a kind sound is present throughout — blues harmonies blend with sparse hip hop drums, horns blast under classic vocal melodies, and soloistic vocal chops sit side by side with clear, intimate lyrics. You’ve never heard this before, yet it’s surprisingly familiar. And it’s only the beginning.

Nap Eyes, Lads

Upset The Rhythm presents

When: 07/11/2016 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £9
Ticket Link: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/367833

NAP EYES hail from Nova Scotia and make crooked, literate guitar pop refracted through the gray Halifax rain. Recorded live to tape with no overdubs, their songs are equal parts shambling and sophisticated, with one eye on the dirt and one trained on the starry firmament, inhabiting a skewed world where odes to NASA and the Earth’s magnetic field coexist easily with lyrics about insomnia and drinking too much. In the world of Nap Eyes, workaday details punctuate (and puncture) cosmic concerns, as songwriter, singer, and rhythm guitarist Nigel Chapman wrestles with air and angels, struggling (and often failing) to reconcile the Romantic rifts, both real and imagined, that define our lives: between chaos and order; solipsism and fellowship; the anxiety of social (dis)orders both big and small; and the various intersections and oppositions of religion, art, and science. It’s the sound of being young and alive in the city, a tenuous and impermanent counterpoise of recklessness and anxiety, archness and earnestness. Following last year’s reissue of their 2014 debut ‘Whine of the Mystic’ on Paradise of Bachelors, Nap Eyes released an album of all-new material entitled ‘Thought Rock Fish Scale’ earlier this year.

Sarah Neufeld

Eat Your Own Ears presents

When: 08/11/2016 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £11.81
Ticket Link: http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/event/241341

Sarah Neufeld is a violinist and composer based in Montréal, Canada. Best known as a member of Arcade Fire, she is also a founding member of the acclaimed contemporary instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre, and most recently as half of an exciting new duo with renowned saxophonist Colin Stetson.

Neufeld began developing pieces for solo violin in a formal sense in 2011, though she has made improvisation and solo composition part of her process and practice since first picking up the instrument at a young age. Neufeld counts Bela Bartok, Steve Reich, Iva Bittova and Arthur Russell among the formative influences for her solo work, in tandem with an ear for the textures and sensibilities of contemporary electro-acoustic, avant-folk and indie rock music.

Neufeld’s debut solo album Hero Brother, released August 20/2013 on Constellation Records, indeed channels all of the above, flowing through shifting atmospheres and oscillating between restrained, stately ambience, emotive études, and raw kinetic energy.  Small touches of wordless vocalisation, harmonium and piano supplant the violin in a few places. The album was recorded in Berlin by pianist and producer Nils Frahm, with Neufeld’s performances captured in a number of locations with site-specific acoustics, including an abandoned geodesic dome.

On February 26, 2016 Sarah Neufeld released her second full length album, The Ridge, via Paper Bag Records and Kartel Music Group. It is a body of work that sees Neufeld moving away from Hero Brother’sclassical minimalism and sepulchral ambience, and into the world of rhythmic pop minimalism. The new album employs more emphasis on vocalizations than Neufeld’s previous works; the interplay between Neufeld’s voice and violin has become strongly integrated and narrative. The album also features Arcade Fire’s Jeremy Gara on drums, adding greater layers to the compositions, creating an intense, dynamic atmosphere, and a captivating listen from start to finish.

In 2016, Neufeld will be touring extensively as a soloist in support of The Ridge.

PRAISE FOR The Ridge

Primarily made up of longer, grandiose songs that follow the whimsical sound of Neufeld’s violin and calming voice, The Ridge balances a darker tone with a breathtaking feeling.” – Stereogum

it is crafted with care and precision and will hopefully open the door for many to the world of instrumental, abstract orchestrated composition… strikingly gorgeous and textural ” – Under The Radar

Neufeld’s focused, restless recordings invite the listener to share in the intensity of her ritual as a performer, creating a necessary and refreshing air of intimacy.” – Pitchfork

a gorgeous album from start to finish, and it’s impressive how captivating it is for something that’s often so minimal.” – Brooklyn Vegan

Sarah Jaffe

Bird On The Wire

When: 12/11/2016 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £8
Ticket Link: http://birdonthewire.seetickets.com/go/sarahjaffethelexington

For 28-year-old singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe, 2014’s Don’t Disconnect is both a mission statement and a call to arms — an album about getting to know yourself in a hyperconnected world that makes it nearly impossible to do just that. The highly anticipated follow-up to The Body Wins continues to showcase Jaffe’s range; released August 19th, 2014 on Kirtland, it was produced by Midlake’s McKenzie Smith, whose “amazing partnership,” Jaffe enthuses, was “like two friends in the studio” — a warmness that bleeds through to the record, despite the technological connotations of its title. If The Body Wins emphasized the triumph of the corporeal — in metaphors and direct references to “the body” — then Don’t Disconnect is about the humanity and vulnerability that lies within. Ultimately, the desire to stay connected in the right way — with yourself, and with the people who matter — is what drives the album.

“Weiss’ pop sense stands out amongst the guitar tapping, odd time signatures,
and shredded vocals of his peers.” – Pitchfork

“Look at someone like Evan Weiss. Literally look at him, he is a beautiful man.” – Noisey/VICE

“This is music to pore over, fall in love with, and have your heart broken to” – USA TODAY

“Evan is one the most challenging and surprising songwriters i’ve ever worked with. He’s also the best guitarist I’ve ever been in a room with. No joke.” – John Vanderslice

“Standards is a total success.” – Kerrang

“Beauty like this doesn’t need a label.” – Rock Sound
Into It. Over It., aka Chicago’s Evan Weiss, today shares the video for ‘No EQ’, one of the most immediately infectious highlights drawn from his recently released third album proper, Standards (out now on Triple Crown Records).

The clip follows a cavalcade of characters and the adventures that ensue as they don identikit, mail-order Evan Weiss outfits. Each package contains everything you’d ever need to be the very best Chicagoan indie-rock linchpin you can possibly be: flannel shirt no matter what the weather? Check! Thick-rimmed glasses? Double-check! Fake tattoo sleeve? Buddy, you’d better believe it!

It features a number of Weiss’ local friends, who all pitched in to create the wonderful weirdness it turned into. Speaking of the video, Weiss says: “My friends in Chicago rallied around to create a beautiful (and weird in all my favorite ways) music video,” before going on to call it “a buffalo plaid nightmare.”

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/EMBKu7fI884

It comes alongside news that Weiss will be returning to the UK for another run of full-band shows following on from his hugely successful co-headline tour with the Hotelier in the spring of 2016. The autumn dates include continental appearances in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic, before Weiss returns to the UK for a handful of dates that include a special treat for long-time fans. Across his three London shows, Weiss will be performing special curated sets covering the vast majority of his already bulging back catalogue, with nights including full performances of Standards, alongside its predecessors, Intersections and Proper, as well as an assortment of EPs and rare tracks. It’s a not-to-be-missed opportunity for fans to be reminded of just how much vital music he’s been behind over the past nigh-on decade, as well as a drool-inducing chance to catch those deep cuts you thought you might never see in the live setting.

Upset The Rhythm presents…

TIM PRESLEY (White Fence)

Tim’s a man in a glass booth, grabbing at scraps of paper blown at his windscreen as if they were of the greatest value. They’re actually of the only value. And we grin in delight in his twist and tumult; in this process, he’s assembling his tunes in essential fashion, rolling around in the dust of his Id-bowl, then reordering the scrambled head-events into a barrage of phrases and stages, flickering through disembodied and re-embodied moments, held together by Tim’s inviolable belief in the song progression underneath. The tension is unbreakable, a thin plastic slip, as he intones upon a maze of high wild mercury stings. On the cover of his new album on Drag City, you see a bare chest and bits of bodies sketched in ragged lines of black and white. Inside, in full calor, we find Tim Presley. The dark force behind White Fence, Drinks, Hair and Darker My Love stepping into the solo light with ‘The WiNK’.

When you tune in to ‘The WiNK’, it takes a couple minutes for you to hear a word. But then it takes only one line until “and then you die,” uttered in a voice of mottled, throaty horror, as if ghosts that haven’t yet shown themselves are advancing through walls. Working with the creative team of producer Cate Le Bon, drummer Stella Mozgawa, and engineer Samur Khouja, Tim’s located the corners of a perfect square, with their creativity and truth crafting unique parts to function as songs within songs, giving the tunes double-jointed features that extend their original intentions. The Presley guitar hand has a powerful, yet quicksilver touch, with metallic brilliance always, esp. in rhythm figurations, where it wrings chords out like panic signals, highlighting “Can You Blame,” “Long Bow,” “Underwater Rain,” and “Clue” (to name a few), and a cover version of Willie “Loco” Alexander’s “Kerouac” (nod and a wink!), where a smooth and steadfast lyric melody is supplanted by a throw of broken guitar and shards of keys. Throughout The WiNK, Tim’s tone is thin and princely, connecting the dots sideways and backwards to align and make the image emerge.

The Hanging Stars, By The Sea

Permanent Vacation presents

When: 23/11/2016 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £6
Ticket Link: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/371733

The Hanging Stars were an epiphany visited upon the rain soaked air of England’s green and pleasant land, becoming whole, tangible and real in the Californian desert.

There they formed there mix of lush harmonies, cosmic americana and tuneful folk creating something halfway between the Mississippi and the Mersey, the desert’s beating sun and the dark skies of London. Their sound is something timeless and yet somehow new, simultaneously nostalgic and prophetic.

They vary in number, yet wherever they go they carry the rain and the sand with them.

“a hazy, desert-dream of a song, nicely sharpened with steely-eyed guitars, Mersey-laced harmonies and just a whiff of the Gun Club.”
– Guardian

“Swampy psychedelia that recalls the Medway Delta as much as the Mississippi, the band’s new single neatly conjoins these influences.”
– Clash

“You might recognise members of the See See and Coastguards within the ranks of this group but Hanging Stars are trippier that their parent bands – or more “cosmicious”, as they describe themselves on Facebook. A brilliant debut for fans of melted country and acid psych.”
– Sounds XP

Formed in 2013, Con Brio is the offspring of seven musicians with diverse backgrounds but a shared love for the vibrant Bay Area funk and psychedelic-soul sound pioneered by groups like Sly & the Family Stone. By 2015, when the band self-produced their debut EP, Kiss the Sun, Con Brio had already become a West Coast institution on the strength of their magnetic live show, with McCarter’s swiveling hips, splits and backflips earning him frequent comparisons to a young Michael Jackson or James Brown.

Dream Themes Full Live Show

PLUS Thamesmeerd Christmas Panto 2016

When: 17/12/2016 07:00 pm

Price: £adv £10
Ticket Link: https://www.wegottickets.com/event/369014

The celebrated TV Theme Tune covers band, who are rapidly growing in popularity following a number of lauded television and festival performances, present a sort of concert-come-panto thing, here at the Lexington, a week before Christmas!

As backing band for the late, great, papier-mache-headed legend Frank Sidebottom, the group originally played the theme to Terry & June while Frank did the raffle. Somewhat inevitably, one could argue, one thing led to another and the band now perform a host of classic TV tunes from Bergerac to Crimewatch and the News at Ten via Strictly Come Dancing.
Now currently enjoying a huge rise in popularity thanks to some celebrated performances in 2015, including one on ITV’s Paul O’Grady Show and another at Bestival – not to mention an appearance on BBC4 in the last ever live broadcast from BBC Television Centre as part of Richard DeDomenici’s genius venture ‘The Redux Project’ – Dream Themes mix up costume changes, onstage arguments and audience games with telly tunes both new and old.
