Message from the
Western Regional Director
by Frank O’Leary

Well, the holiday season has begun. Thanksgiving is over, hunting season is in full swing for most of our members and the testing season has concluded.  To those of you who participated in the WR tests this year we thank you and hope that your experience was both pleasurable and successful.  Every effort was made to ensure both.

This time of year is busy for the Western Region Board of Directors.  Test dates for the 2018 Test Schedule has been establish for next year.  There will be spring and fall tests in Utah and Washington.

Nomination for Position #1 closed with no challengers to the incumbent being put forth. Therefore, Joe Furia will serve an additional three year term.

We hope your hunting season is going well and your dogs are working perfectly.  Hopefully you are finding birds; we actually are finding good numbers here in Walla Walla.

Enjoy you hunting season,
Frank O’Leary

Western Region Annual Raffle

The 2017 Western Region Annual Raffle drawing took place November 30th. Members of the Walla Walla Country Club Morning Coffee Group drew the winning tickets.

Again this year has not one but TWO GREAT  PRIZES and TWO LUCKY WINNERS.  The first ticket holder drawn had their choice of an Upland Bird Hunt for 4 persons or a Beretta Over/Under Shotgun.  The second person drawn will receive the other prize.

Congratulations to the winners of the WR Annual Raffle.  Summer Swart, of Kooskia, ID, was the first name out of the bowl.  Summer, who choose the Beretta Over/Under Shotgun, purchased her ticket from her sister-in-law, Andrea Mahorney.   The second ticket drawn belongs to Frank & Marianne O’Leary from Walla Walla, WA.  Frank & Marianne and two of their hunting companions will enjoy the Hunt Oregon Upland Bird Hunt.  Hunt Oregon, LLC, has graciously donated the upland bird hunt for four people, for three days, and four nights.

A special thanks goes to all the WR members and friends that sold the tickets.  Listed in order of the number of tickets sold they are:  Frank O’Leary; Andrea Mahorney;Bill Coylar;Randall Cherry; Barry Wild; Wayne Touve; Marianne O’Leary; Joe Furia; Jeff Martin; Dan Courey; Steven Hurt; Hagen Kruger; Ralph Martinez; John Metcalfe; Jerry Review; Byron Smith; Ron Tokar; Don Evanson; Gil Dueck; Thomas Konchar; and John Michael Deszez.  Thanks to each of the aforementioned for helping to fund the WR for another year.

My name is Max Barker.  I am from Hurricane, Utah.  I have worked in the accounting field for over 25 years and currently work as an accountant for the local school district.  I am very fortunate to have been married to my beautiful wife, Cindy for nearly 30 years.  We have been blessed with seven wonderful sons, three daughters-in-law, three grandsons and three granddaughters.

My dad bought me my first German Shorthaired Pointer when I was just 15 years old.  At that time, I didn’t know much about hunting dogs, but I did love to hunt.  It only took one time seeing that dog point and retrieve a rooster pheasant and I was hooked.  I have owned German Shorthairs pretty much most of my life since then except for a few years that I took off to raise and train boys instead of dogs.  However, several of my sons and now my oldest grandson, who is just 4 years old, share in my passion of hunting and owning good hunting dogs.

In 2010, after being a little discouraged about a few of the shorthairs that I had owned in recent years, I was doing some research and came across the Deutsch Kurzhaars.  Immediately, I knew that I needed one and that this was very possibly the solution to the big running, big ranging, hyperactive, field trial dogs that I had experience with in the past..........
