Our speaker next week is Paul Gallagher FRPS, who will be presenting his talk entitled East & West.
The talk will be presented over Zoom for both those in the clubrooms and at home. Paul describes his talk thus:
Over the past 7 years I have dedicated a lot of time exploring the landscapes of America, Japan and China. Working in the abandoned towns and farms on the open plains of the Dakotas and Montana in the USA was an eye-opening experience and one that takes you back in time in these bleak environments.
|
|
The opposite to this was my experience of the bitter cold elemental landscapes of winter in Hokkaido, Japan, and the exploring the vastness and grandeur of the granite spires of Yellow Mountain in China. The three environments could not be more different, but as a photographer, they left me spellbound”. For the second half of my lecture I will demonstrate the power of the basic sliders in Lightroom and how these with simple brushes can transform the most challenging images.

Here are a few images from the talk: |

The next Digital Imaging Group Meeting will be on Monday 8 June at 7.30pm.
Meetings are informal and take place at the clubhouse and via zoom.
This is an early call for images as I am on holiday from May 21st for 2 weeks so would like to collate the image slideshow before I leave.
If you would like to share your images at the June meeting, please send them to me at dig@bristolphoto.org.uk ideally by Friday 15 May or the very latest Sun 17th. Please number your images in the order you would like them to be viewed and resize to the usual competition size, not essential but helps to keep the files to a manageable size. If you could please restrict the number of images to a maximum of 30 this will ensure that we enjoy a wide variety of subjects.
Many thanks to all those who contributed to the April meeting, we were treated an inspiring variety of images see below some of the pictures we enjoyed.
These meetings are a great opportunity for all members to share images outside the competition environment. The aim of these evenings is to share knowledge, projects, expertise, ideas and to obtain feedback and inspiration. So think about what techniques or tips you can share for the benefit of others, or what you might want help/feedback on.
DIG is the perfect environment for newer and less experienced members to pick up hints and tips or receive specific feedback to improve their photography and editing skills. BPS has many experienced members with diverse interests and styles who would be happy to help. If you are unsure whom to approach, just ask and someone will help or point you in the right direction.
If you have a more detailed topic/technique to share, then let me know and we can schedule a longer more focused session, or feature this on one of the intervening practical evenings.
I look forward to receiving your images.
Rachel Domleo.

Distinctions Advisory Meeting |
The next meeting will be held on Monday 11 May at the Clubrooms and is open to ALL members.
For those of you who are unaware of the distinctions available, there are basically two types:
- Those where you have to produce a panel or set of pictures.
This is the case for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), The Photographic Alliance (PAGB) and the Welsh Federation (WPF). For the RPS and WPF the work has to form a panel. For the PAGB, the work does not have to be related, and the pictures are assessed separately.
For the RPS awards you have to be a member of the RPS. This costs £130 per year (£98 if you are over £65). The RPS has different categories of awards, and we can advise on these. This is why the PAGB awards are so popular as you only pay an entry fee.
- Those where distinctions are awarded for the number of pictures accepted in approve National and international exhibitions.
These exhibitions are approved by the PAGB for national exhibitions, Federation de L’Art Photographic (FIAP) and The Photographic Society of America (PSA), for International Exhibitions These days FIAP mostly dominate the Internationals, and their awards are very popular.
BPS Advice Meetings
Andrew Marker, Ralph Snook and I offer advice as to how approach an entry for these distinctions. We do not expect you to have a fully worked out entry and like to see work in progress.
We are also able to offer more detailed advice on pictures than is provided by our Club competitions, as judges' advice is limited by the large entry and limited time available.
So, if you want opinions on pictures, bring them along.
If you wish to show DPIs, please let me know.

BTW Urban Photography Workshop with Roger Bracewell
Following Roger's visit to Bristol photographic society a few weeks ago seven stalwart club members joined him for a 3½ hour workshop in Bristol on Sunday 26 April. We met at Temple Meads railway station and embarked on the slow meandering walk along the river from Temple Quay to King Street. Roger encouraged us to look at sites and locations with fresh eyes embodying the principles that he had talked about during his presentation. We were all given an assignment and summary sheet to remind us and prompt us of what to look out for. The weather was very kind, and the time passed very quickly. Most of us felt that we could have spent several more hours gathering shots. Roger was always at hand to give us his thoughts and to clarify what he we should be focusing on. We all agreed to forward to Roger 8 images covering the four categories of urban photography in our assignment and then meet again for a critique and a sharing of images and learning points. For some of us this was a first time to explore this genre of photography and hopefully it will provide some images for future competitions.
