LBS THURSDAY STUDENTS
BUILD THEIR LINDY COMMUNITY
MEET THE "THURSDAY SWING KIDS"

2011 is starting off with a bang in our Westside community. Last week, I featured some communication between our newbies from Thursday night
Lindy By The Sea students. Well, one week later, and their ranks grew at Rusty's - and their were 12 of them there! And three were brand new newbies - with only two hours of class under their belt. You can see from the happy and genuine smiles on their faces, they had a great time. And even Gio is looking almost normal in the pic!
Here's a letter from one of the LBS Thursday class "Cruise Directors" - Tina - recounting her experience at Rusty's on January 12 -- I know it'll sound REALLY familiar to every Lindy Hopper reminiscing back to their early days:
Last night was such a BLAST!
We had a good number of people from class come out.
Let's see if I can remember who was there:
Myself, Jenny, Monique, Sabrina, Kevin, Arthur, Robert and...I can't remember
her name.
(I'm sorry, I'll figure it out in class tonight)
We also saw some people from last year's class(es), notably Ben and Ryan.
The band [Phat Cat Swinger] was really great.
They played a wide variety of songs from classics to modern favorites (Zoot Suit Riot!) and some original tunes.
Everything was "dance-able."
I really worked up a sweat when Arthur and I danced to a particularly FAST song.
However, there was one slllllooooooowwwwww song to which I was flummoxed.
I kept wanted to count my steps but the tempo was too slow for a triple or even single step.
I felt so awkward with my moves.
Imagine being back in your Jr. High Gym School Dance, yea, that's what I looked like.
Mercifully, Robert cut it short.
I'll have to remember to ask Rusty what to do during a "too slow" song.
We all danced with each other multiple times.
Dancing with classmates really helps calm the nerves.
I didn't feel embarrassed about asking for help since we practice together in class.
It really gave me confidence.
I don't believe I was alone in that thought since some of our group started asking strangers to dance.
BRAVO!
I'm still working up the courage to do that.
Some of the dancers at the club are so amazing!
Dips and Twirls and Aerials, OH MY!
Best part of the whole night was I got to hang out with everyone.
Can't wait to see you all in class tonight.
Yours in Swing,
Tina~

They have their own official Facebook group - Thursday Swing Kids. And on it, they are encouraging each other to come out dancing. You can see a bit of their correspondence from the above picture post on their Wall after this past Wednesday's dance:

I guess we can all bet Sonia will be at Rusty's next Wednesday!
I thank all of you Rusty's Regulars for making all our newcomers welcome. You really are the best of the best. |
ON A SERIOUS NOTE
ITALIAN LINDY HOPPER NEEDS HELP

Silvia Palazzolo & Chazz Young (Frankie Manning's son, and dancer extraordinaire)
In my years as a Lindy Hopper, I have met many wonderful people, and top on that list is Silvia Palazzolo, from Genova, Italy. She is a young, dynamic, and compassionate person with the greatest love of Lindy Hop, it's past, present, and future, that I have seen in any person. She is also one of the main people responsponsible for Lindy Hop in Italy - as she organizes major events (three of which I have been a part as guest instructor).
Take a look at the info on her Facebook Page, and you'll see all her websites and the events she organizes in Italy.
HERE IS WHAT IS HAPPENING TO SILVIA
AND INFORMATION ON HOW YOU CAN HELP
Silvia Palazzolo has an uncommon disease called Amyloidosys, a tragic condition that creates cancers cells throughout the entire body. The disease is very expensive to treat, with monthly costs for medicines reaching into the thousands Euros. But for the victims of Amyloidosys, the only hope for prolonged survival is obtaining those critical medicines.
For Silvia, who has already exhausted all of her resources, the financial challenge to obtain those medicines has become desperate. Silvia simply no longer has the means to buy the medicines needed to keep her alive, and so we are asking the Lindy community to come together to help Silvia in her time of need.
If any of you are able to donate any money to Silvia, please donate through PayPal at info@info@swingdancegenova.net
Important: Make sure to send the money as PERSONAL not (not not not) Purchase. This way she will get it all, and Paypal will not keep a percentage.
OR... INFORMATION ON FOUNDATION HELP
If any of you are aware of any foundations that provide assistance to those with terminal diseases, please email the name of the foundation to Silvia’s Facebook page. And of course, if any of you have ideas, words
of encouragement, or any other thoughts that may help and/or comfort Silvia, please email her at her Facebook page
We thank all of you for any sacrifice you can make.
Please feel free to post it on your facebook to reach as many Lindy Hoppers as possible.
PERHAPS WITH OUR INTERNATIONAL LINDY HOP COMMUNITY, WE CAN HELP SILVIA WITH LOVE, SUPPORT, AND FINANCIAL AID AND KEEP THIS VITAL PERSON ALIVE AND WELL!

HOT CHOCOLATES
FEATURING AERIALS IN OUR UPCOMING WORKSHOP
We always talk a lot about Frankie Manning in class. That's because he was one of the most important influences and innovators in Lindy Hop, as well as one of the key individuals in igniting its resurgence.
In class on Thursdays we've been talking about his style -- how he liked it to look like he was flying when he danced.
Enjoy this clip where you'll see Frankie "flying" -- he's wearing the long trench coat and porkpie hat.

Founded in 2000 by Rusty Frank's swing dance students, the club has two missions:
Having Fun and doing good deeds.
Volunteers go to hospitals, ,senior homes, and community events for the purpose of good deeds, entertainment, and education in the Los Angeles area.
The Swing Shift Rhythm Club (SSRC) is a volunteer club open to the public and the events are organized by it's members.
There are no dues, members can attend as many or as few events as they wish. |

LOST YOUR JOB? TOOK A PAY CUT?
DON'T BE A STRANGER! WE'LL WORK SOMETHING OUT FOR YOU
Every now and again, people just disappear from our scene who have been regular dancers.
I wonder why.
Did they get married, did they move, or did they suffer some financial hit.
If it's economics, please know that you are always welcome. Don't stay away.
We can work something out! Here's some options:
~ I am happy to work out trades... you could sit at the door for a bit at the Rhythm Club in exchange for the dance that night.
~ Find me at the Rhythm Club, and just pay what you can.
~ I'll give you some Rhythm Club passes until this era blows over for you.
~ And the same thing goes for all Lindy By The Sea classes!
I know that dancing really helps in hard times.
So don't be a stranger!
We'll work it out to meet your needs.
