• Measuring subcutaneous fat patterning with precision: an ultrasound technique for all sized bodies
    The ability to accurately measure subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) is important when assessing body composition, particularly with respect to treatment of obese and anorexic patients and to evaluate the health of athletes. An ultrasound technique developed at the University of Graz in Austria for precise measurement of SAT and embedded fibrous structures in lean and normal-weight individuals has now been validated for use with the overweight and obese. This technique can be used to assess response to weight intervention treatments, including comparison of fat profiles of patients pre- and post-bariatric surgery.

  • Extremity CTA: rapid, accurate imaging of vascular trauma
    CT angiography (CTA) is an accurate and useful imaging examination to assess for vascular injury of patients with penetrating vascular trauma to the extremities. Radiologists at Boston University Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center, assessed the clinical performance of CTA in the evaluation of extremity vascular trauma over a 10+ year time span in an article published in Emergency Radiology.

  • 3D MRI-derived models aid surgical planning for complex kidney cancer surgery
    Kidney-sparing surgery is increasingly being used in select patients to treat localized small renal tumor masses. Knowing the location of a cancerous tumor within the kidney and its anatomic relation to other surrounding structures is an important factor when making this surgical planning decision. Urological surgeons currently use 2D, 3D and 3D reformatted images to assess kidney tumor anatomy. Research conducted at New York University School of Medicine showed that when 3D printed models derived from MR images were available, they aided in pre-surgical planning decisions.

  • Computer-aided reporting software expedites chest radiograph interpretation
    The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) provides chest radiograph interpretation for the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) at all of its locations in the United States. A computer-aided reported system customized for tuberculosis screening was developed to efficiently manage the daily high volume workflow interpretation of procedures without compromising interpretation quality. Described in the Journal of Digital Imaging, similar types of workflow systems could be developed to improve interpretation efficiency for such screening applications as chest radiography of patients in intensive care units.

  • Canadian breast digital tomosynthesis clinical trial expands
    TA randomized clinical trial to compare the diagnostic accuracy of conventional full-field digital mammography (FFDM) with digital tomosynthesis (DT) plus FFDM for breast cancer screening has expanded with the addition of the Ottawa Hospital Breast Health Centre and the Ottawa Integrative Cancer Center (OICC) in Ontario. The Tomosynthesis Mammography Imaging Screening Trial (TMIST Lead-in) study is being compared to DMIST, the clinical trial that determined digital mammography was superior to analog mammography for the identification of early stage breast cancer in women with dense breasts and those under the age of 50.

  • Clinical trial launched to assess treatment of breast fibroadenoma with HIFU
    A multi-center clinical study to treat breast fibroadenomas with high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) was launched in February 2017. It is currently recruiting a patient cohort of 100 women in the United States. This University of Virginia Medical Center-led study initially also includes three participating hospitals in New York City.
