Wow, January put on quite the show this year!! We took a few days off to deal with the weather during which Sarah managed to give herself a concussion cross country skiing on the ice and Robyn spent five days chipping her car out of a block of snowcrete. Needless to say, we are not on good terms with a certain groundhog who had the gall to declare winter continue for six more weeks. While we aren't the biggest fans of cold and ice, this winter has given us the opportunity to really show off our favorite knit and crochet accessories so that will be what we focus on as the cold weather continues.

On the bright side, the fall classes are up and we have lots of exciting events happening in the shop over the next few months. We are also doing our third annual Finishing February with a $50 gift certificate up for grabs for one of our lucky finishers.

New In The Shop

Embrace more sustainable fashion with a mini weaving loom that’s ideal for mending favorite jumpers, cherished cardigans and cozy socks. You can also create woven embellishments that can give clothes a new lease of life.

Based on a design that initially emerged in the 1940s these looms make mending easier and faster. With this mini loom, you use your needle like a shuttle. Run a finger over the row of 14 hooks to lift and lower alternate warp threads. You’ll find the neat little woven patches emerging beneath your fingertips in no time.

Once you have created basic weave you can progress to creating different patterns and textures to really make your weaving stand out. This loom will allow you to make woven patches that are a maximum 5.5cm wide by 4.5cm tall.

Introducing the new Zodiac Series from Emma's Yarn! As they follow the sun’s path through the cosmos throughout the next astrological year, they are releasing a Theme Pack and a Super Silky Trio for each of the twelve signs of the zodiac as they come up! We will have all 12 colorpacks and theme packs as they come out.

January 20th marks the beginning of the eleventh month of the astrological year, Aquarius. People born with the sun in Aquarius are humanitarian visionaries and make the world a better place. Emma's Aquarius Theme Pack and Super Silky Trio feature splashy, ocean blues which remind us of the Aquarius tendency to make waves through innovation and fresh ideas.

Looking for a project? We have a Ravelry Bundle full of ideas for using the Emma's Theme Packs. As for the colorpacks we think they would be wonderful in projects like the Gradient Lights Shawl by Laura Dobratz, the Triangulate Shawl by Carissa Browning, the Dreamstate Shawl by Lisa Mutch, or the Bunting Shawl by Hailey Bailey

The February Crazy Beautiful Color of the month from Emma's Yarns is a blend of soft blush and mauve tones that echo Valentine’s warmth, balanced with moody greens and cool neutrals that reflect winter’s lingering chill and quiet transition toward early spring.

As usual, the color plays well with a huge variety of coordinating colors! Pictured here (left to right) with Harbor, Sage Before Beauty, Love Drunk, Barbie Girl, and Silver Lining.

While red yarns have been flying off the shelves faster than we can restock them, we still have lots of red yarns in stock (thank you Christmas!!) If you are knitting or crocheting a Melt the Ice Hat, we have reds in worsted, dk, and fingering weight. If you are looking for something a little quicker, Sarah created a knit pattern for a chunky version available in the shop.

For ReBelle's February CAL/KAL we will be focusing on those projects hanging out in the bottom of your project basket, the dreaded UFOs, HFOs, and WIPs. Whether weaving the ends in on that shawl you finished last winter, reworking the sleeve that came out too long, or simply picking up and working on that hat you abandoned last month. We want you to pull out those unfinished projects and finish them. Feel like starting something new? Why not make a mate for that single sock or single mitten that you forgot about? It doesn't even have to match!! Whatever your project, join us on zoom every Thursday in February and we will get you motivated to finish it.

All ReBelle knit alongs are free and open to the public. You are welcome to attend as many or as few of the KAL sessions as you like.

Rustic Little Hearts

You’ve got this!  If you can do the knit stitch, you can knit this sweet little heart by Heidi Kirrmaier.  The pattern uses simple increases and decreases that you will learn in class. Expand your knitting skills and let someone know that you love them with this little heart.

Bring yarn of any weight, and appropriate needles (we recommend worsted weight and US7 needles.)

Scrap Yarn Hedgehogs

The only thing better than a squishy stuffed hedgehog is one that uses up scrap yarn!  The Scrap Yarn Hedgehog by Midori Hirose is knit using yarns single, doubled, and tripled and a clever 2 color brioche that takes the place of bobbles. Susan will teach you all of these techniques as well as German Short Rows in the class.  We bet you can’t make just one!

This class requires a knowledge of knitting in the round in a small circumference.  The pattern details the amounts of yarn needed, and the suggested needle sizes which vary from lace weight to super bulky yarns.

Teacher:  Susan Winkler
Saturdays, February 7 and 14, 1-3pm.
2 classes, $30

Arabesque Hat

Ready to try your hand at 2 color brioche? The Arabesque Hat by Xandy Peter has colorwork that looks complicated, but, like any other project, if you take it one stitch at a time, you can learn this technique and knit this striking honeycomb hat. (Bonus- the inside of this hat looks great too so you get two hats for the price of one!)

The hat is knit in the round using 2 colors of worsted weight yarn.  This class is suitable for anyone who has the skills to knit in the round with both large and small circumferences and can work basic increases and decreases.  The brioche technique will be taught during the class so no previous brioche experience is needed.

Teacher:  Susan Winkler
Wednesdays, February 11, 18, and 25.  6:30-8:30pm.
3 classes, $40

Sophie Scarf/Shawl

The Sophie Scarf and the Sophie Shawl, both by Petite Knits, have been staff and customer favorites for Sophie can be petite (as with the scarf,) going around your neck once or she can be voluminous (as with the shawl,) cocooning you in woolly comfort- it all depends on the effect that you want and the yarn that you choose.

This is a great beginner project.  You’ll learn the basics of shaping using increases and decreases, how to knit an attached I-cord, tips and tricks for keeping track of where you are in the pattern, and how to use lifelines in the event that something goes wrong. For this class you will need 50g (scarf) or 150-300g (shawl) of DK weight yarn and a US4 (scarf) or US8 (shawl) needle.

Patterns available on Ravelry- Sophie Shawl and Sophie Sacrf

Teacher:  Susan Winkler
Thursdays, February 12 and 26, 6:30-8:30pm.

Sailor Slippers

Join the multitudes who have warm feet this winter and make the popular Sailor Slippers by Annie Germain. These have taken the knitting community by storm, with over 6000 projects on Ravelry. Come to experience the magic of felted wool, and keep your toes toasty all winter long.

In this class, Susan will walk you through sizing, paired increases, paired decreases, knitting fabric for felting, and finishing. The slippers are knit flat in stockinette stitch and felted in your washing machine. This project is suitable to any advanced beginner.  For the yarn, we recommend either the Malabrigo Chunky or the Cascade 220 held double for this project. You will need 1 skein each of 3-4 colors depending on how you plan your slippers.

This cowl will become one of your statement pieces in your wardrobe!

Basic crochet skills are required for this class. We will learn to do the Foundation Half Double Crochet and make the V-Puff stitch. This project uses about 400 yards of worsted weight yarn and a US K10.5 /6.5mm crochet hook.
