Our speaker next week is Roger Bracewell ARPS who will be presenting his talk: Urban Photography: The Wonderful Everyday. Roger says the following about his talk:
"Urban Photography" covers a range of subject areas including urban landscapes, architecture, street and documentary photography. Working across these genres, my aim is to capture the essence, diversity and dynamism of urban environments – whilst offering a social commentary or reflection on our urban lives.
|
|
I will also consider the work of other urban artists and photographers who we can look to for inspiration. Using examples close to home – in Bristol and Cheltenham - I will demonstrate that urban images can do more than simply provide a visual illustration of a location or place. As we shift our focus from more general urban scenes and cityscapes to individual buildings and structures we are drawn by geometry, shapes, lines and curves, abstracts, textures and details. I have always described myself as a geographer – and first qualified with a degree in Town & Country Planning before spending most of my professional life working as an IT consultant. These interests have driven a passion for photographing people and places and sharing my images, knowledge and expertise with all those around me. I became an Associate of The Royal Photographic Society in 2024 and was awarded a Distinction in Landscape following the successful submission of a panel of black & white mountain images.
A portfolio of my work, covering landscapes, woodland and urban photography, and details of my one-to-one tuition and workshops can be found on my website https://rogerbracewell.com
In the meantime, here are a couple of images to keep you going until Wednesday: |

Monday 30 February – 10am-1pm – There is no set theme for this coming Monday. So bring along anything you want to shoot and we'll just "play it by ear" (or should that be eye?) and see what we can do.

Distinctions Advice Group |
A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY - DISTINCTIONS ADVICE GROUP
The next meeting will be held on Monday 9 March at the Clubrooms.
For those of you who are unaware of the distinctions available, there are basically two types:
Those where you have to produce a panel or set of pictures.
This is the case for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), The Photographic Alliance (PAGB) and the Welsh Federation (WPF). For the RPS and WPF the work has to form a panel. For the PAGB, the work does not have to be related, and the pictures are assessed separately.
For the RPS awards you have to be a member of the RPS. This costs £130 per year (£98 if you are over 65). The RPS has different categories of awards, and we can advise on these. This is why the PAGB awards are so popular as you only pay an entry fee.
Those where distinctions are awarded for the number of pictures accepted in approved National and international exhibitions.
These exhibitions are approved by the PAGB for national exhibitions, Federation de L’Art Photographic (FIAP) and The Photographic Society of America (PSA), for International Exhibitions These days FIAP mostly dominate the Internationals, and their awards are very popular.
BPS Advice meetings.
Andrew Marker, Ralph Snook and I offer advice on how to approach an entry for these distinctions. We do not expect you to have a fully worked out entry and like to see work in progress.
We are also able to offer more detailed advice on pictures than is provided by our Club competitions, as judges advice is limited by the large entry and limited time available.
So, if you want opinions on pictures, bring them along.

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).
|
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions,
it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know
so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that
you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell
us we can't possibly know!
DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER. |
