Hello all animal-lovers, from a very warm and sunny Dorset! We've had glorious weather for days now, and it’s set to continue for a while yet.
Arriving home after a hot day at work, there’s nothing nicer than sitting outside in the garden for a while, watching the wildlife. Well, I say wild, but this seagull is a regular visitor to my garden, availing himself of the water in the bird bath for both a wash and a drink! This supply is obviously well-used, as I refill it every morning. In weather like this, it’s not just food we should remember to put out for the birds: fresh water, too, is essential.
Within a foot or two of my garden bench, I can watch bees (who start work at stupid o’clock in the morning, and don't knock off until after I do), busily collecting nectar stashes, which can be seen in the accompanying image.
This issue of Animal Magic is chock-full of info and features – we hope you enjoy reading!

Jude Brooks,
New books at Hubble & Hattie
Fresh in this month, we have two brilliant new titles … in stock now!
Dogs just wanna have FUN!
There are many books that celebrate our canine friends, but few so colourfully and evocatively demonstrate the sheer enjoyment they experience simply from being a dog. The photographs in this book are not about the bond between us and our canine companions, the results of dog training, or the ever-expanding canine wardrobe. Rather, the focus is on how dogs behave when they are freed from everyday constraints, and can indulge their natural instincts.

The unsung heroes here are the owners, who, after ensuring that their beloved best friend would be safe, let him or her run free to interact with others for the photoshoot. The resultant images showcase pure doggie delight – as the expressions on the dogs’ faces demonstrate!

Whether chasing balls or other dogs, mud-bathing, swimming, or rolling, this is a joyous celebration of dogs simply enjoying themselves!

A puppy called Wolfie
Using established and cutting-edge psychotherapies, Free Will Teaching™ (FWT) offers a perspective that will change your approach to teaching your dog. Force-free, and embracing each dog’s right to free will, both you and your dog will achieve great success. Owning a puppy is an exciting and rewarding experience. Understanding why your puppy does what he does, and what influences his behaviour, is key to a harmonious life together, and essential for avoiding the many problems and issues that crop up along the way.
Charting the first 18 months of Wolfie's life, from when he arrived with Kathie Gregory’s family at nine weeks of age, this book looks in detail at the mind and behaviour of a puppy, and how he develops as he becomes an adult dog. It also examines how dogs think, what they do, how they learn, form responses; their likes, dislikes, development stages and hormones, and how all of these influence a dog’s personality and development.
Language, cognitive ability, and emotional awareness are key aspects of FWT, resulting in fantastic achievements. Whether for your own dog or on a professional basis, this detailed account of how to use Free Will Teaching™ as a way of life to teach and guide every dog, takes today’s dog training into the future.

Hubble & Hattie Kids!
There’s a brand-new imprint at Hubble & Hattie!
At Hubble & Hattie, we have always promoted compassion, understanding, and respect between all animals – including human ones – through our publications. We’ve also always strived to bring you books that are of real benefit, whether offering practical help on improving the lives of you and your animals, or providing a better understanding of how animals experience the world, and us.

It’s never too late to learn such values, and – just as importantly – it’s never too early. And that’s precisely where our new imprint comes in. With Hubble & Hattie Kids! we aim to promote the same values that we’ve always held uppermost, but to the adults of the future.

Of course, we’re not talking about academic papers or text books here. No, we’re talking beautifully illustrated, carefully crafted books that children, and more than a few adults, will cherish and learn from, absorbing valuable life lessons that will help improve the lot of all animals and our relationship with them.

It’s early days for our new imprint, but we have some great ideas, and some wonderful books already in the pipeline that are relevant to all age groups, and there’s something for every child. Over the coming year, we’ll be expanding our kids range, and tailoring our website to our new imprint.

So, say hello to Hubble & Hattie Kids!, and to our first books from our new imprint!

Time to head off on holiday!
What a glorious start to the summer we have had! We're nearing July now, and that can only mean one thing: time to think about that summer holiday! No holiday would be complete without taking along the whole family, and that includes our four-legged friends.

We are very fortunate in the UK to have a number of holiday companies that provide dog-friendly accomodation. Whether you prefer to holiday in the great outdoors, or favour your creature comforts, there is something for everyone.
For those of you who fancy a holiday closer to nature, websites such as pitchup.com offer a list of dog-friendly campsites across the UK and around the world! The world is literally your camping oyster with this handy site!

If you prefer to stay in a home away from home, then websites such as forestholidays.co.uk and caninecottages.co.uk offer a wide selection of properties that will let your canine companion holiday in style. These can be browsed by region, so you're not stuck for choice!
Websites such as yourdogholiday.co.uk and weacceptpets.co.uk allow you to search for any type of accommodation, not just campsites and cottages, but B&Bs and even houseboats! With these sites, you'll be really spoilt for choice, so you might have to treat yourself to more than one holiday!
Before you head off on your holi-bobs with Fido in tow, though, there are a few things you should consider in order to help your trip run as smoothly as possible. These include: researching the local area to suss out places that are dog-friendly; where the nearest vet is, and what to expect in the way of wildlife, and deciding what you need to pack for your dog, especially for long car trips or extended vacations.
For more information, check out our blog, and whilst you're at it, maybe think about stocking up on some helpful books, such as Walking the Dog and Dogs on Wheels. Later this year, we have a great new book, Wonderful walks from dog-friendly campsites throughout the UK, which will help with planning your future dog-friendly trips! This book will guide you on 46 varied walks that allow you and your dog to enjoy the diversity of the British landscape, and return to the campsite invigorated and exhiliarated.

Bring Your Dog To Work Day 2018!
Hubble & Hattie welcomed some new faces for this year's Bring Your Dog To Work Day …
Friday the 22nd of June was this year's Bring Your Dog To Work Day – the UK's fifth official annual event. Founded and organised by ethical dog grooming product company HOWND, and this year raising funds for All Dogs Matter. Oh … and we were an official sponsor, too!
Each year BYDTWD raises money for charities dedicated to making a difference to the welfare of dogs. Through social media, TV and print, they have been spreading the word about all of the positive benefits to be had in bringing your dog – and sometimes other pets – to work, not just for yourself, but for colleagues and others.

This year, we were once again an official sponsor, and as usual, we had a small contingent of doggy pals on-site at H&H HQ. First in the office was Bonnie (that's her on the left), who was spending the day at H&H with Jude, and did a fine job ensuring visitors were checked-in and registered – you can’t be too careful, you know!
Also joining us was Jeff Danton’s dog, Scooby. If you’ve seen photos of Scooby before, you may notice he has a little less hair now … all the better in this weather.
Bonnie, and Scooby with Jeff, at Hubble & Hattie for Bring Your Dog To Work Day.

Absent for what was set to be her first ever BYDTWD at H&H, was Indie, Kevin Atkins’ dog, who was recovering from her keyhole spaying the day before. Amazingly, she was up and about within hours, as if nothing had happened, and is now back in the office, squeaking her Ducky, and playing with the giant gym ball … albeit sporting a rather unusual underbelly haircut!
She may have been unable to join us at H&H HQ, but she did make it into the Dog with a Job hall of fame … see if there are any other dogs you recognise here.

Each year, BYDTWD offers a competition, and if you donate over £10, you are automatically entered into the draw for a chance to win hundreds of pound worth of goodies. This year, 24 different companies have donated to the draw, including us: we’ve donated a selection of books of the winner’s choice, valued at £50.
This year there will also be a mega prize for the best pooch selfie uploaded to the ‘Dog with a Job Hall of Fame’ that posts the best dog with a job on #BringYourDogToWorkDay! Winners will be announced on Friday 29th June. For more info, and to get prepared for next year’s Bring Your Dog To Work Day, take a look at the official website, and keep up to speed with all the good work that is being done by All Dogs Matter.

Lily: one in a million update
This book has been available for a while, but that doesn't mean author Laura has slowed down in terms of promoting her fabulous book!
You may remember, back in March, we posted a blog that detailed Laura's personal promotional efforts in time for the release of her book, Lily: one in a million. A few months down the line, and Laura has really stepped up a gear in terms of getting Lily's story out to the world! Here's just a brief summary of what she's been up to ...

  • Lily has been featured in many print articles, from the magazine for the Hamphire WI to Portsmouth News
  • A World Book Day school visit inspired a pupil so much, that she wrote a short story from Lily's point of view, to be entered in he National Young Writers' Awards, which this year was judged by none other than David Walliams!
  • Laura has arranged a number of book talks and book signings, which have been going down a storm
  • Lily celebrated her 4th birthday on the 5th of May
  • Laura has a few thigs in common with the newest Royal, which prompted her to send a copy of the book to the newlyweds

For more deatils on what Laura and Lily have been up to in the last couple of months, be sure to keep an eye on our blog for a full post, coming soon!

Nowzad – The only offical animal shelter in Afghanistan

Nobody likes to hear of animals in need – even more so when it's for those stuck in war-ravaged countries. However, for those animals on the streets of Afghanistan, there is hope in the form of Nowzad.
The life of a dog or cat in Afghanistan is a desperate one, and Nowzad is their one chance. The charity relieves the suffering of stray and abandoned animals, and is the only recognised animal shelter and clinic in the whole of Afghanistan. But they need your support to help animals with no voice but Nowzad's.
Author talks Stateside
Professor Daniel Mills has a couple of events lined up in the United States next month
Professor Daniel Mills is an internationally recognised veterinary behaviour specialist, and a professor in veterinary behavioural medicine at Lincoln University, but he may be better known to H&H readers as co-author of Life skills for puppies, and Helping minds meet. Next month, Daniel is heading Stateside to take part in two fascinating events.
Entitled "The Emotional World of Dogs: New insights into Behaviour and Training," this two-day seminar will present the latest research on dog cognition and emotion, as well as how these findings can be applied in clinical practice. The goal is not only to improve our understanding of dog behaviour, but to ensure the safeguarding of dogs' well-being.
There are two events schedules, one on each coast: the east coast event is taking place on the 7th of July at the Women's Humane Society in Bensalem, PA, and the west coast event is taking place on the 28th of July at the East Bay SPCA in Oakland, CA.
You don't have to head to the US to benefit from Daniel's knowledge; we have two brilliant books that are essential reading for all dog owners.
