Dear Friends and Comrades,

SA CHRISTIANS TO HOLD VIGIL FOR PALESTINE AND LEND SUPPORT TO 15 MAY CT PROTEST
Christians in South Africa are hosting a vigil for Palestine and in support of the #GreatReturnMarch. Palestinians have been gathering at weekly protests, dubbed the #GreatReturnMarch, which is a 6 week series of demonstrations taking place along the fence separating Gaza and Israel. Members of the media and public are invited to the vigil taking place on Sunday 13 May at 15h00 at Constitution Hill (Human Rights Room, Constitution Hill, 11 Kotze Street, Johannesburg). The event is supported by the South African Council of Churches, the Council of African Independent Churches, Kairos Southern Africa, South African Jews for a Free Palestine, BDS South Africa, the Palestine Solidarity Alliance and the National Coalition 4 Palestine (NC4P). SACP ADDS WEIGHT TO 15 MAY PROTEST AND CALLS FOR ACTION AGAINST ISRAELI APARTHEID
The SACP has lent its support to the national Palestine protest taking place on 15 May in Cape Town adding that: "The time for statements is over, and the time for action is well over due! The SACP welcomed the resolution by our alliance partner and governing party, the ANC, to “immediately and unconditionally downgrade the South African embassy in Israel to a liaison office”. Sufficient time has now passed and its implementation must happen with immediate effect." Click here.

ANC YL BACKS 15 MAY PROTEST AND EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER DIRCO OFFICIAL

The ANC Youth League in the Western Cape has backed the upcoming 15 May Palestine protest to Parliament saying: "We, as the Youth League of the governing party, will be joining fellow South Africans and ANC members in expressing our concern over the delay in implementation of the recent ANC 54th National Conference resolution for the 'immediate and unconditional downgrade of the SA embassy in Israel to a liaison office'". The Youth League also slammed an official within the Department of International Relations, Assistant Director Zanele Ngoqo, for infringing policy and "coseying up to Israel". Click here.

NEHAWU TO JOIN 15 MAY PROTEST AND CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT TO IMPLEMENT RESOLUTIONS
The National Union of Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) has called on Government "to cut all ties with Apartheid Israel starting with the implementation of the African National Congress 54th Conference resolution of immediately and unconditionally downgrading of the SA embassy in Israel to a liaison office." NATIONAL PROTEST FOR PALESTINE AND AGAINST ISRAELI APARTHEID [11AM, TUESDAY 15 MAY, CAPE TOWN]
The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape, the Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa together with the SACP, COSATU, NEHAWU, ANC Youth League, YCL, COSAS, SA Jews for a Free Palestine, MRN, UCT PSF, PSA, National Coalition 4 Palestine, Embassy of Palestine in SA, Palestine Museum and several other groups will embark on a protest march on Tuesday, 15 May 2018, to the Parliament of South Africa in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle against Israeli Apartheid. The protest, to be addressed by national leaders, is open to all to attend! Metro trains for those wanting to join the protest are free on the day - wear a Palestine scarf/tshirt or simply print the flyer (click here).

The 15th of May 2018 is significant because it is the culmination of the Palestinian people’s #GreatReturnMarch. Palestinians have been gathering at weekly protests, dubbed the #GreatReturnMarch, which is a 6 week series of demonstrations taking place along the fence separating Gaza and Israel. It will culminate in Palestine on the 15th of May 2018. In the last 6 weeks, during the #GreatReturnMarch Israeli snipers have shot dead over 45 Palestinians including several teenagers.

The 15th of May is also the day that Donald Trump has declared that the US Embassy will be moved, in violation of international law, from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Finally, the 15th of May marks the 70th anniversary of the 1948 Palestinian Nakba (or, in English, “Catastrophe") when more than 700 000 indigenous Palestinians were expelled from their homes by pro-Israeli forces. A displacement that preceded the creation of the Modern State of Israel at the expense of the existing indigenous Palestinian population.

The protest march on the 15th of May will, among others, celebrate the progressive resolution of the ANC’s 54th Conference for the “immediate and unconditional downgrade of the SA Embassy in Israel to a liaison office” and to call for its implementation by Government.

GROUP OF SOUTH AFRICAN JEWS TO SUPPORT 15 MAY PALESTINE PROTEST IN CAPE TOWN
Members of the South African Jews for a Free Palestine (SAJFP) will be joining the upcoming 15 May Palestine protest to the Parliament of South Africa.

In an open letter published in today's Weekend Argus Newspaper, they write: "We will join our comrades in Palestine, Israel, South Africa and around the world in their call to stand in unison... we stand firmly against the continued brutality, dispossession and oppression perpetrated by Israel against Palestinians. In particular, we cry “it’s enough!” In particular, we cry: not in our names – neither as South Africans nor as Jews." Click here.
