Wednesday 28 October

Next week our speaker is Alex Nail FRPS, who will be presenting his talk: Adventures in the Drakensberg.

Mountain Photographer Alex Nail talks about his experiences on the 3000m high Drakensberg Escarpment in South Africa. His talk will cover the creative and technical approaches he takes, particularly focussing on compositional ideas. He’ll discuss some of the practical aspects of backpacking through remote landscapes and, of course, share a collection of images of one of the most dramatic landscapes on earth.
Alex is a full-time landscape photographer based near Bath with a passion for mountains and wilderness areas. He increasingly heads to remote or hard to reach locations in search of new images. His photography is largely illustrative, showing magical lighting conditions and spectacular scenery. He is a great believer in the trustworthiness of photography as anartistic medium. Whilst he edits his images they are all real, with nothing added or taken away.

He writes for UK outdoor and photography magazines both in print and online. His imageshave been published in a variety of different media and he has run a number of successful exhibitions.

Have a look at Alex's website to see some of his fantastic photographs.

In the meantime, here are a few images to give you a flavour of the evening:

Studio Group
Monday 24 October 10am-1pm – Mike is on holiday again, so David Alderson will be in charge. All are welcome to join this session at the clubroom, when David has suggested we have a go at some indoor minimalist photography. Minimalism is the optional prescribed topic for Print Competition Round 2, as well as the topic for the forthcoming WCPF Knightshayes Trophy competition.
If you Google “Minimalist Photography Ideas At Home”, you’ll find lots of examples of tabletop set-ups that need only simple props and some creative lighting to add expressive shadows.  Bring a few small everyday objects, a tripod and an LED light if you have them.
For any queries or bookings, please contact Mike Martin:

Fellow of Irish Photographic Federation

Well done to Derwood Pamphilon on recently gaining his Fellowship of the Irish Photographic Federation. Derwood is shown on the left being presented with his Fellowship at the recent adjudication by the President of IPF.

Derwood can now add this to his growing list of photographic distinctions which now becomes FIPF ARPS EFIAP/p DPAGB

Below is Derwood's successful panel:

Welsh Photographic Federation - New Distinctions
The Welsh Photographic Federation is delighted to invite applications for their new Licentiate (LWPF) and Master (MWPF) Distinctions, the assessment day for which will be the 6 June 2027.

These new prestigious awards will be open to a maximum of 20 applicants annually and to all photographers from around the world. Achieving the LWPF requires the applicant to submit a selection of 8 images for assessment, whilst the MWPF requires the applicant to submit a selection of 20 images for assessment. In both cases the images will be assessed on their own individual merit by three highly regarded, experienced photographers. (More details can be found in the Distinction Handbooks – see below).

The WPF will now be one of the few Federations within the PAGB to offer these highly sought-after distinctions along with it's successful AWPF Distinction. Successful candidates earn the lifelong privilege of using the letters LWPF or MWPF after their name. These new distinction along the AWPF will provide photographers with a clear pathway to excellence and will a visible testament to their photographic proficiency from club level photographer to international standard photographer.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
This from Sue O'Connell:

First time entering Exposure One, Photographer of the Year Awards, an international monochrome-only competition, so I was very pleased to receive three nominations and also an Honorable Mention for "Shock and Awe" below.

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Marketplace
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
